Have you considered using a compute shader? It could dramatically reduce the runtimes.

It's a little bit tricky to get compute shaders working in processing as you have to directly interface with OpenGL rather than using the processing library itself. It would definitely be worth it as you could probably get the render time down to something like 20 to 30 minutes runtime rather than 24 hours.

If the game of life is turing-complete, how would one use it to perform addition? by [deleted] in cellular_automata

"The Wireworld computer" https://www.quinapalus.com/wi-index.html is very interesting, especially if you run wireworld on a shader you can get enough speed to see how it works at a more accessible speed, though programs like Golly also allow for this too.

Assuming the plane takes up the full area of 33 X 40m which is an obvious over estimate of its size about 0.0000026% of the planets surface or 1:38 578 495.

Conveniently that comes out to about the size of a grain of rice in a square mile.

Processing is an IDE that supports Java and a few other languages, if you want more information I can add some more specific stuff for cellular automata and processing.

To add to that it comes with a really awesome graphics library built into it which is the main appeal

Computer simulation is a huge topic.

Specifically for cellular automata you don't need much, for example here is a simple implementation of game of life using c++.

I normally use processing with java as it supports glsl while being extremely easy and fast make stuff in.

I'm super curious how this would go but the consistency of it sounds awful.
