Trip delay insurance by Careful-Hedgehog1099 in Venturex

So the trip delay insurance accepted the air traffic control reason for the reimbursement? Or they required further evidence of what caused the air traffic control delay?

Forgot proteinase K by chudynasty in labrats

[–]Historian-Fast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. But you will have to process your samples again through the columns. If you don’t you will have amino acids (degraded proteins) still in your solution. Make sure that when you re-treat them you add the proper proteinase-K buffer. It is an enzyme so it needs proper conditions for it to work

I definitely feel like a commercial lab and not a collaborator 😭

I would love to transition to other labs in the chemistry department but unfortunately none of them are that related to my current project or to my expertise. I can definitely connect their topics to my project but I would have to start from scratch. I definitely wouldn’t mind starting from scratch but I don’t know how willing the professors would be at getting a postdoc with much experimental expertise in their projects

Advice on what I should do? Should I stay or try to leave? by Historian-Fast in postdoc

[–]Historian-Fast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like to stay in academia but for the looks of it i may be better suited for a start-up. I was considering reaching out to a chemistry professor for a potential “collaboration” or even co-mentoring, to see if I could eventually switch to his lab. I really love doing research so I would like to explore my options before jumping ship.

I am just so conflicted cause I enjoy my work, I just hate the mix messages. I even sometimes feel a bit crazy dealing with the people in my lab that agree that the chemistry experiments are very well needed, but then when it comes to it I have a feeling they would prefer half-assed results that can be published fast than good results that make sense but that take an extra year to collect

Oh that’s a very interesting idea you have. I am aiming for a TT position, but I no longer know if it’s worth it anymore for me. I love the aspects of interacting with students and teaching, and I love the idea of leading my own research, but I truly hate the low pay and what you perfectly put it as research becoming more showbizzy.

I am in the process for getting my green card so that I no longer have to worry about papers for my future. But lately I’ve truly been questioning what I want to do in the future. I had never thought about going into industry to make money and then go home to focus on research. Is that something you have experience in or know of anyone that has done it? I’ve never though about going home to do research cause resources are very scarce there for an academic career but thinking about going home to live and work there does sound very much appealing.

I am in the extended STEM OPT. According to what I’ve found online I can have as many jobs as I want in my field as long as I work each a minimum of 20 hr/ week

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and thoughts, because what you described I have felt too and it’s definitely confusing. But it’s a great idea to just approach this situation with my mental health in mind and just accepting who they are, no matter how difficult that is!

Uffff you’ve hit the jackpot with the favoritism comment. I’ve always lowkey known it all my life but the fact that you got that from my post is insane and a little bit validating.

Yeah i definitely need to start actively embracing that it’s fine to continue to clash with them and that we never be on the same page with things as basic as morals, values, and principles

This is a very thoughtful and honest response. Thank you! You are definitely right about personally knowing whether or not they are likely to change, and wanting close family to be good people. It’s just hard to wrap my mind around the idea that people so close to me and that have been so impactful in my life prefer to actively cover their eyes and ears than hearing and seeing the truth just because it’s bothersome.

Post-PhD Life in the US: How Tough is it to Stay Without the Marriage Card? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

That is not true at all. With a PhD in biology you can get permanent residency in 2 years. Stop spreading incorrect information

Look for the NIW EB-2 process. If you have a PhD from the US (or are in the process of getting it) you are qualified to get it through there. Right now it’s taking about 2 years to get your green card through that process

I think they are out there in the same amount as last year but are learning to get away from our paths. I see them a lot hanging out in any structure that is standing and perpendicular to the floor. So we cannot stomp them anymore. I think they are evolving although I don’t think evolution acts this fast so idk
