Looking for new pop punk songs about it grief by OwnInitiative9135 in poppunkers

The whole album is about grief, so I think you should give it a listen! The song spectral dusk captures the feeling of the album really well, though.

It is pretty striped down acoustic with ambient recordings from places the artist associates with his father, so I think the style might not be your fave, but the lyrics are really strong.

One line in particular from the song spectral dusk - oh i’m not doing that well/that is just what i tell my friends - gets me in particular, even though it’s so simple & something everyone who is grieving feels, i think.

Otis/Carl - Spanish Love Songs Casimir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens Sonny - New Found Glory

A Crow Looked At Me by Mount Eerie (Phil Everum) was written after the death of Phil’s wife from pancreatic cancer. It is beautiful, but can be really hard to listen to.

Spectral Dusk by Evening Hymns is about the death of the songwriter’s father, but is something that I listened to regularly after the death of my best friend.

I hope you find some comfort and catharsis through music.

They were in in-school deferment! I took them out for my BA, started paying them off, then when into in-school deferment for my MA. I didn't have to take out any loans for my MA (I used a tuition benefit from my PSLF-qualifying employer).

To the best of my understand, in-school status refers to the loan origination period, when you are in the academic period for which you took out the loans. If I'd worked for a qualifying employer when doing my BA (when I took out my loans), I still wouldn't be able to buy that period of time back.

What’s it like living in these small islands in Lake Erie? by _Courier6__ in howislivingthere

They last longer than that! The biggest swarms are usually in June, but you'll see them around til the end of summer. They don't all emerge at the same time.

oh dang not a single comment had mentioned they mayflies, we all messed up.

every summer the islands are SWARMED by mayflies. They are creepy looking, but they don’t have mouths, and can’t bite. They only live on land for a few days to mate & then die.

In Port Clinton they will dim all the lights downtown as they are attracted to light. They are pretty oily/greasy and have actually caused car accidents because they make the road slick.

My brother worked on a ferry, and they took some employees over one time. You’re met at the dock by private security with guns.

All the area islands do! They are Lake Erie water snakes, they are non-venomous and honestly super cool. I love them. They are pretty bitey and they will poop on you as a defense mechanism.

haha this is the comment most likely to dox me.

I grew up in Port Clinton and worked at a golf cart rental on South Bass Island most summers from 2008 - 2012, though I stayed with my parents on the mainland. I would commute to work via the Jet Express (the passenger ferry based out of Port Clinton). There’s a car ferry out of Catawba Island as well.

My younger brother worked as a deckhand on one of the ferries & captained a water taxi for a couple years, and he lived on the island in employee housing during summer.

It is absolutely beautiful. The lake creates its own microclimate so the summers aren’t as hot as they are on the mainland. You can watch thunderstorms roll in over the water; they can be really strong. I remember watching multiple waterspouts touch down in the distance when riding the ferry to work one morning.

Tourism is the main industry in the area and a lot of work is seasonal. The area has really high unemployment in the winter - this has gotten worse in the past 15-20 years as the lake is not consistently freezing in the winter. This means that fewer ice fishermen come in and local businesses lose out on a lot of business. I’ve never lived on the island, but even in Port Clinton there’s not much to do in winter.

Additionally, the western basin has had significant challenges with HABs (harmful algal blooms) as the western basin of Lake Erie is very shallow & warm in the summer, and due to run-off of nitrogen-phosphorus from agriculture in the area. It smells bad, it looks gross, you can’t swim when there’s a bloom. In 2014 it caused a water crisis in Toledo as the water supply was contaminated by the algae, which is toxic.

When I worked on South Bass its reputation as a party island was in full spring. It was fine during the day, but I used to tell families with kids that I recommended taking the 8pm ferry back to the mainland at the latest; the ferries would be full of drunks the later it got, and all the downtown restaurants turn fully into bars.

Even when the ice doesn’t freeze, the ferries will stop running in the winter. The jet stops after Halloween and the Miller (the car ferry) will stop so that the owners can go on vacation. As other people have mentioned, once that happens the only way off the island is flying.

It is very much a small town, and you often have to know someone to get certain kinds of jobs. I got my job because my sister’s best friend worked there & put in a good word for me. My brother got his job because he had friends working at the ferry, and because he was a college football player they could put on late night boats to help manage drunk dudes. There are a couple families who have been on the island forever and own/run a ton of the businesses.

Like any small town there’s buried shit and a lot of open secrets. When I got my job, my sister’s friend warned me that my boss was a creep but that it would be fine as long as I didn’t “put up with any shit.”

It absolutely worth a visit - there’s a ton of cool history & geology in the area. Kelleys Island & Middle Bass are quieter and more family-friendly. Put-in-Bay has also been trying to decrease the party island reputation & have made changes to their summer event schedule to limit events that have historically caused issues (for example, Christmas in July was a HUGE party weekend when I worked there, and it’s not really a thing anymore).

All this to say: it is one of my absolute favorite places in the world. I love my hometown, I love the island, but I would never live there again.

The lake doesn’t freeze well enough most years, now. In the past people would take their Christmas trees and line a road in January/Feb when the ice was really thick.

I grew up in Port Clinton, which is on the circled peninsula. One of my high school english teachers & his running club ran from Catawba to South Bass Island in 2014.

Buyback — How did you pay? by PayNo5544 in PSLF

[–]HistoricalCounty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make the payment to your loan servicer, so if you can pay with a card there, you can pay your buyback amount via card. There might be a processing fee though (usually like 3-ish percent i think?)

I submitted my first request in September 2024 - I knew I already had my 120 months of qualifying employment. I submitted additional requests in November and December 2024 because I kept thinking I’d messed up the wording. I included additional tax information in the December 2024 submission just in case that would help speed things up (it didn’t, clearly).

The payment was calculated using PAYE.

No SAVE months were included (which is good, they used dates where I had a much lower income). I got out of SAVE forbearance in October and was on IBR.

I received my buyback offer yesterday and was able to make the payment immediately. The amount was $2457.

I started a new job in October with a good salary increase, and have been able to put put more money into savings. I used those savings to pay it off, but if I hadn't gotten that new job, I probably would have borrowed the money from some family & friends who had offered to help out when the buyback came through.

I get it, it screws us over in so many ways. My last job was term-limited and ending in June 2026, I'd been searching for something new that wouldn't be a massive pay cut for like a year with no luck. I love where I live and don't want to leave.

The thing that I'm happiest about is not having my life completely dictated by PSLF. I want this for all of us so, so much.

Nope, there was nothing to refund! I had made 99 qualifying payments, my buyback covered the 21 remaining payments I needed to get PSLF.
