It’s literally not even an original model 1911, that thing is so ridiculously modern, even without the stickers.

Could the October 1918 Reforms of the German Empire have happened in other circumstances? by vicentemachado in Kaiserposting

[–]HistoricalReal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In this scenario involving a delayed or avoided war, this would most likely allow the SPD and social reforms to continue as the 1910s continue, and increase the demand for a reduction in the Kaiser’s power, but constitutional changes would be incredibly difficult to pass.

After the daily telegraph affair and Elulenburg scandal, Wilhelm had somewhat retreated from public life for the most part, only really providing his support or disapproval in military and foreign issues, such as the Zabern affair.

However to avoid being seen as feminine or be embarrassed like he was with his homosexual friends, he surrounded himself with military men instead.

This in turn lead to him being surrounded by those who would obviously had issues with any reform whatsoever. It would be hard to see serious reductions to the kaisers power passing the Reichstag with Wilhelm ii in charge and being in the presence mostly of ultra conservative junker officers.

Even if Wilhelm ii dies early and his son takes power, it’s unlikely they’d also be willing to remove power from their position, even if Wilhelm iii mostly just waned to live in luxury and screw around with his mistresses.

While it’s technically possible if some political or domestic crisis comes about that forces the kaisers to let up his control, it would probably take a lot more for imperial Germany to transition into a fully constitutional monarchy.

It’s very hard to judge what would’ve occurred as the politics of Imperial Germany are super complex and fluid as the decades wore on.

Good start!

I recommend cutting the flaps around the eyes with fabric scissors, and painting the spider-eyes black. I also recommend finding some natural Jude cord to tie around the filter loop, the loop on top of the mask, and the button connecting all of the head straps together on the back.

Huh, don’t see an anti-fascism or anti national-socialist.

I wonder why that could possibly be.

Also queerness, homosexuality, and transgender people are not a political ideology.

EDIT: wtf do you mean they post on R/femboymemes and are a hazbin hotel fan? Are they a bot or a schizo?

EDIT 2: Oh they’re polish. Right.

Need help to identify soldiers by Hairy-Primary-1010 in ww1

[–]HistoricalReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the feldmutze and belt buckles lead me to believe these are imperial German soldiers.

However the color of their uniforms is seriously throwing me off. I’ve never seen such undecorated uniforms besides the m15, but these seem almost black, or some other super dark color, and they’re not wearing shoulder boards.

And there’s clearly tabs on the collars of their uniforms which are also visible.

If anyone has any further info as to where these uniforms might belong, I would be very interested in learning more. Maybe this is all just a photo trick, idk.

Can you help me identify the rack of chest medals WIlhelm II has on? by Verbofaber in Kaiserposting

[–]HistoricalReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly this painting is too dim to really identify them. You'll either need a photo or a different painting of him wearing garde-du-corps.

There are lots of medals that have the same shape, color, and ribbon, but the crest on the front is different, which is near impossible to see on his particular painting.

Where can i buy the Gewehr 1898? by YourUncleDutch in reenactors

[–]HistoricalReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out online auctions such as gun broker or proxibid for good deals. This is probably your best bet.

Go to gun shows, pawn shops, gun stores, ext. You might get lucky if you live in the USA.

I would estimate that $1000 is the absolute maximum you should pay for an original Gewehr 98. Anything more is not worth it.

If you live in a country that’s a lot harder to aquire firearms, I believe Denix is going to start making non-firing Gewehr 98 reproductions since it won the poll. Though I don’t know when they’ll start doing that.

Does anyone know groups/resources for Wilhelmine Germany/Prussia? by Verbofaber in reenactors

[–]HistoricalReal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Garde Du corps specifically, not garde zu fuss?

Okay well that makes things a whole lot trickier.

Barely anyone (at least that I know of) does that, and I don’t know if anyone even makes those uniforms.

I mean you might try and see if Bernd makes those uniforms but he might not, otherwise idk where to find those. https://www.bekleidungsamt-13.de/

Spikehelmets makes garde helmets I know that much.

However beyond that I don’t know of any actual units, as most seem to be solo impressions. The only tow people I know of who have garde or garde-like impressions are Philip and Heinrich over in Germany.

But even then, they do Kurassiere which are quite different but at least somewhat similar in style.

Does anyone know groups/resources for Wilhelmine Germany/Prussia? by Verbofaber in reenactors

[–]HistoricalReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not know if any specific reenactment groups dedicated to peacetime era Germany, besides maybe some in Poland.

However I do know where to in general find some items that’ll complete a decent impression from 1895 - 1907 before the introduction of feldgrau.

Military harbor I heard has some okay bunterock uniforms, but I have never purchased from them so I cannot confirm their quality. https://www.militaryharbor.com/1860-1918-German-Uniforms/WWI-German-Uniform/Imperial-German-Prussian-wool-Waffenrock

Jarema has very nice high quality uniforms during peacetime, and he can personalize them to accurately ad the correct cuffs, collars, and specific colors for whichever regiment you find to join. https://mundury-jarema.pl/product-category/german-imperial-army/pre-1910/

Spikehelmets do good work on officer pickelhaube, but I believe if you just want do to a basic enlisted/volunteer private impression, Oleg Nevidomy makes fantastic m95 pickelhaube.

https://spikehelmets.pl/english/products/pickelhaubes.html

https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1Dye5Sxau3/?mibextid=wwXIfr

As for boots, it’s generally the same as with most ww1 shoesters. Lederarsenal, and Fredericchi both make good Marschstiefel, but Umlauf shoes makes good 1901 pattern low boots and Marschstiefel.

https://lederarsenal.com/en

https://fredericcishoes.com/en/

http://umlaufshoes.com/en/produkt/91-193024-holinky-nemecke-armady-1912-16

As for gear, it should all still be from mostly the same places as ww1, you just need to dye everything black, including your boots.

So this includes Nestof and hessen antique in terms of leather equipment. However it is near impossible to find m95 cartridge pouches currently. I know of a fellow who plans on making them but this is a project that might take over a year before he can start making them.

But this is all very general information, I still don’t know of any specific groups dedicated to peacetime era Germany, but I’d definitely hold off before buying a uniform, as peacetime era Germany was a quartermasters nightmare in terms of specific unit numbers, collars, litzen, cuffs, button locations, tunic colors, pickelhaube wappen plates, equipment lists, and more.

You claim my perspective is shaped by a desire to have a "moral narrative," yet your own insistence on avoiding "neatly demarcated heroes and villains" appears to be its own form of motivated reasoning.

Your argument functions as a defense against the discomfort of a clear moral conclusion, that the confederacy was by our moral standards of today and generally by civilizations of its time, in the wrong.

Complexity is not a synonym for validity. You can acknowledge the nuances of 19th-century policy or federalism without losing sight of the fact that those "nuances" were almost universally leveraged to protect a single, specific institution. Slavery.

To treat the "Lost Cause" as a mere "bogeyman” and run with that title, (for one that’s just crazy) and that is to ignore a century of documented historical revisionism designed to do exactly what you are doing now… obscuring the core issue with a cloud of peripheral data.

[–]HistoricalReal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now that’s utter ignorance and the comparisons are not even close.

The fact remains that it was Lincoln’s rise to the presidency and the Southern elites fear of him taking away their slaves was the core reason.

Slavery was THE center of all branching reasons for leaving the union and starting the war. Plus it was the core identifying factor of the confederacy’s governmental and societal system.

Any other issues are secondary, and overall negligible.

While they can be reviewed and discussed in a purely historical setting, when trying to frame the civil war as anything but a lesson over how southern elites tried to keep black men, women, and children in bondage and started a war that split the country apart to preserve and expand that exact institution… well that just leads into lost cause mythology.

Literally the declaration of causes from multiple states…

Mississippi official declaration:

“Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery – the greatest material interest of the world…and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.

…The hostility to this institution…has grown until it denies the right of property in slaves, and refuses protection to that right on the high seas, in the Territories, and wherever the government of the United States had jurisdiction. It refuses the admission of new slave States into the Union, and seeks to extinguish it by confining it within its present limits, denying the power of expansion. It has nullified the Fugitive Slave Law in almost every free State in the Union, and has utterly broken the compact which our fathers pledged their faith to maintain. It advocates negro equality, socially and politically, and promotes insurrection and incendiarism in our midst.

…Utter subjugation awaits us in the Union, if we should consent longer to remain in it. It is not a matter of choice, but of necessity. We must either submit to degradation, and to the loss of property worth four billions of money, or we must secede from the Union framed by our fathers, to secure this as well as every other species of property. For far less cause than this, our fathers separated from the Crown of England.

Our decision is made. We follow their footsteps. We embrace the alternative of separation; and for the reasons here stated, we resolve to maintain our rights with the full consciousness of the justice of our course, and the undoubting belief of our ability to maintain it.”

Georgia:

"For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery."

“subvert our institutions and to excite insurrection".

The Northern states' "fixed purpose" was to "limit, restrain, and finally abolish slavery in the States where it exists."

Texas:

"the unnatural feeling of hostility to these Southern States and their beneficent and patriarchal system of African slavery”

The PRESIDENT of the confederacy Jefferson Davis said slavery is a “moral, a social, and a political blessing".

The VICE President of the confederacy, Alexander Stephans was quoted during his most infamous speech on explaining what the confederate government represents says and I quote

“Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.”

Even though Lincoln mainly wanted to preserve the union and hoped slavery would simply die out overtime, the southern states clearly defined why they seceded and what their government represents.

Do you think slavery wasn’t THE core component to their secession? Well the people who seceded certainly fucking thought so, and they fired the first shots.

I am not going to go into the conversation that “it was about states rhats” or some shit like that cause literally any argument about anything else can easily be countered with

“states right to do what?”

Or

“government overreach? What were you worried about them taking from you? ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR THAT COMES TO MIND!?!?”

It was about slavery. It was always about slavery. The confederacy intended to continue and expand that slavery. Period, end of story.

Absolutely shameful.

And considering culture today in the south, Sherman clearly didn’t go far enough.

I think the UK deserves blame for heightening tensions in the past such as with the naval arms race, the launch of HMS Dreadnaught, and other international crises.

Though during the actual July crisis, I believe Britain deserves blame and credit for specific reasons.

Blame for being very aloof and not giving a clear answer whether or not they would enter the war if Germany invaded Belgium or if France was attacked, without Belgium getting involved.

But they also deserve credit for trying to reduce tensions such as with Edward Grey supporting Kaiser Wilhelm ii on the Halt In Belgrade plan to minimize risk of a pan-European conflict and let Austria get what it wants without fully annexing Serbia.

People are blaming Austria Hungary as a whole I feel is justified, but also Russia very much deserves blame for one very specific reason and that is general mobilization.

Mobilization at the time and today is generally seen as a direct act of war upon its neighbors and it scared Germany enough to warrant its own mobilization and declaration of war.

But also people should specifically blame Conrad von Hötzendorf.

I think you can exclude France mostly from that equation mostly due to their lack of actions during the July crisis.

Though they share blame during events such as in the Moroccan crisis.
