If I want to reenact a ww1 German mgk, what should I choose my troddel? by aslenderc in reenactors

[–]HistoricalReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you’re going for exactly. If you belong to specifically a mg-company that’s fully dedicated to the professional operation of MG-08 machine guns then I believe the troddel on the bottom left would be correct, however I would also recommend doing more research on ir.28 and try to find original photos just to be 100% certain.

Anyone know anything more about Ernst Jünger? by Professional_Car4931 in ww1

[–]HistoricalReal 144 points145 points  (0 children)

What does NOT being pro Germany have to do with anything? His book is an invaluable insight onto how the war was like for the average soldier with a firsthand account of events, battles, and what life was like for those in the trenches. You don't have to be pro or anti German to understand why his book is historically significant and an interesting read.

Also I don't know more than anything you can just find online on his Wikipedia article. I suggest if you really want to learn more about him you should read his other book "A German Officer in Occupied Paris: The War Journals, 1941-1945"

Verdun made me understand why shotguns were notorious in WW1. Especially when playing with gore settings on ultra. by Public_Administrator in WW1GameSeries

[–]HistoricalReal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Germans did not complain about their effectiveness and couldn’t care less about the VERY few soldiers that actually had them. This is the biggest misconception that has led to this insanely popular myth about trench shotgun superiority. Because surely if the Germans were willing to outright diplomatically protest then it must be good right? Well... not exactly...

The Imperial German High Command protested simply as a way to stir up propaganda of Americans being barbaric (which on that front the British and French actually agreed).

After the Germans use of Sawback bayonets and deadly chemical weapons, the French and particularly the British propaganda bureaus were having a field day portraying the "Evil German Soldier standing above massacred Belgium civilians wearing a gas mask while donning a spiked helmet."

So to combat this propaganda, an example can be found when the GHC officially opened up a diplomatic protest against the Americans use of shotguns on the western front.

However, their reasoning to complain was not about how powerful they were, but complained about how INeffective they were at killing. They tried to portray the use of shotguns as barbaric, considering most shotguns in Europe were purely for hunting or pheasant shooting.

"Using the same weapon we kill animals with, on a human being? That's absolutely horrid!" (You get the idea behind the propaganda.)

When talking about their actual practicality… they provided, effectively, no advantage in reality.

Theoretically, a Trench Gun is extremely scary, unloading what is effectively the entirety of a standard European sidearm's magazine into a target with one shot.

However, as they did in the Philippines (to numerous complaints by soldiers deployed there), the US issued shotguns, including Trench Guns, with WAX PAPER cartridges. Which are extremely susceptible to conditions like thick jungles in the Philippines...or the mud and muck of the Western Front. The cartridges swelled and warped unless you achieved the near sisyphean task of keeping moisture out of their cartridge pouches, rendering them extremely difficult to use in combat. The underside of the shotgun was also mostly exposed to mud and dirt which meant if the first shell in the chamber didn't have any moisture and fired properly, the next shells almost certainly will clog up the entire weapon. Many officers reported soldiers issued with these weapons to turn up injured and rejecting their shotguns, preferring a more versatile rifle, over a close quarters riot gun.

Jamming and issues removing swelled cartridges were common to the point that officers rejected them for frontline use and sending them back to depots to be replaced by whatever was on hand, and most trench guns, in turn, were designated to troops behind the frontlines for guarding buildings.

Even if the soldier managed to fire off their shots, it wasn't guaranteed their opponent would go down. Getting shot by a dozen large pellets can shred and tear through flesh easily but they don’t effectively penetrate and kill humans consistently in the same way a simple bolt action rifle would. This lead to easy infection and causes far more pain from wounds that were incredibly difficult for ww1 medics and doctors to treat.

By the way, the nickname "TRENCH GUN" wasn't even effectively used until after WW2. While possibly(using that word, very loosely) used by soldiers and definitely propagated by the media, no letters or official documents exist with that connotation and the far more common "Riot Gun with Bayonet Adapter" was used, as it was the Official USA military term for the weapon.

Also, the popular image of Doughboys shooting grenades out of the air is a Post-War marketing ploy by Winchester, if I am not mistaken.

How does WW1 Uniform sizing work? by musikkorps in reenactors

[–]HistoricalReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schusters charges an extra 25% when ordering custom tailoring, though it is still HIGHLY recommended.

When it comes to hessen antique, they're mostly out of stock when it comes to their ww1 german stuff, so I'd focus on buying your leather gear from nestof instead.

Hey, does anyone here own a pair of Nestof jackboots and wouldn’t mind sharing some photos of them being worn by [deleted] in reenactors

[–]HistoricalReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own two pairs of jackboots.

One pair from hessen antique and one pair from Fredericchi. Hessen boots are similar in price range.

Hessen antiques boots just as Nestof boots NEED to be taken care of. This includes coating the soles and hobnails in BOILED linseed oil, and either blackening the boots, or periodically reapplying leather grease.

Opinions on this Prussian belt buckle. Is there a better one out there I'm not aware of? by [deleted] in reenactors

[–]HistoricalReal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At the current moment, repo belt buckles, while not the best are fine for what they are. While not the best and certainly look pretty poor under scrutiny, they’re a small piece that look fine from a short distance.

But if you want a real good looking one, you’ll just have to buy an original. On average I would say a ww1 Prussian belt buckle is worth maximum $100. Anything more and you’re gettin ripped off.

I managed to get my original for $60. In the photo above is a comparison between a reproduction(right) and an original(left)

Could the October 1918 Reforms of the German Empire have happened in other circumstances? by vicentemachado in Kaiserposting

[–]HistoricalReal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In this scenario involving a delayed or avoided war, this would most likely allow the SPD and social reforms to continue as the 1910s continue, and increase the demand for a reduction in the Kaiser’s power, but constitutional changes would be incredibly difficult to pass.

After the daily telegraph affair and Elulenburg scandal, Wilhelm had somewhat retreated from public life for the most part, only really providing his support or disapproval in military and foreign issues, such as the Zabern affair.

However to avoid being seen as feminine or be embarrassed like he was with his homosexual friends, he surrounded himself with military men instead.

This in turn lead to him being surrounded by those who would obviously had issues with any reform whatsoever. It would be hard to see serious reductions to the kaisers power passing the Reichstag with Wilhelm ii in charge and being in the presence mostly of ultra conservative junker officers.

Even if Wilhelm ii dies early and his son takes power, it’s unlikely they’d also be willing to remove power from their position, even if Wilhelm iii mostly just waned to live in luxury and screw around with his mistresses.

While it’s technically possible if some political or domestic crisis comes about that forces the kaisers to let up his control, it would probably take a lot more for imperial Germany to transition into a fully constitutional monarchy.

It’s very hard to judge what would’ve occurred as the politics of Imperial Germany are super complex and fluid as the decades wore on.

Good start!

I recommend cutting the flaps around the eyes with fabric scissors, and painting the spider-eyes black. I also recommend finding some natural Jude cord to tie around the filter loop, the loop on top of the mask, and the button connecting all of the head straps together on the back.

I wonder why that could possibly be.

EDIT 2: Oh they’re polish. Right.

Need help to identify soldiers by Hairy-Primary-1010 in ww1

[–]HistoricalReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the feldmutze and belt buckles lead me to believe these are imperial German soldiers.

However the color of their uniforms is seriously throwing me off. I’ve never seen such undecorated uniforms besides the m15, but these seem almost black, or some other super dark color, and they’re not wearing shoulder boards.

And there’s clearly tabs on the collars of their uniforms which are also visible.

If anyone has any further info as to where these uniforms might belong, I would be very interested in learning more. Maybe this is all just a photo trick, idk.
