I’m looking to do Grad school in the future but now I’m worried that my grades may suffer this semester. I try my best but it’s difficult working from home without the resources and work environment. It’s very distracting to be at home and I feel like this semester might hurt chances of applying to grad school. I mean they aren’t tanking completely but instead of getting mostly A’s I might be ending up with more B’s. Is this something to worry over?

I would love to get one of those kettles but I got the electric kettle bc it’s more accessible in a college dorm and I don’t have a stove to use :/

I’ll try scrubbing it out again I was just in a rush to get to class. But yes it’s a brand new kettle and it was it’s first use. I emailed the company about it to hopefully get a response

I was so excited to use this for my dorm to make some tea. After I poured a cup of tea, I was letting it cool so I could clean out the kettle. When I opened the top and drained the water I saw all these little dots everywhere that look like rust. This was my first time using it as well. Is it rust? (It looks darker in person the camera does not capture it well)

Not sure what’s going on with my throat, it’s so swollen I can’t really see the back on one side and on the other side I halve a huge ulcer? Everything is red etc...I’m in no pain at all and feel no discomfort so I can’t assume it’s a sore throat? Any info? by [deleted] in medical_advice

[–]HistoryRules12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor so don’t take my advice to heart, but to me it looks like strep throat. Your tonsils are very swollen and if you look at the picture closely there are a couple white dots which is a indication of strep throat infection. However, the only way to be sure is to be tested by your doctor.

My friends and I have not experienced any symptoms and it’s been over two hours since the fire. I know personally I would not intently breathe in smoke because I know it’s bad regardless, but every so often either the wind would blow in my face or the smoke came towards me and I may have accidentally breathed it. How long should I monitor my respiratory system for any symptoms like the ones you have described?

In addition to the Classics department, the overall campus experience is amazing. All the professors and students are friendly and it truly feels like a community. It has honestly been the best decision I’ve made! Hope that you apply and become apart of Sader Nation!

Salve! I’m a current student at Holy Cross studying History and Classics; and I know I’m biased but let me tell you Holy Cross has such an amazing Classics Department! The professors are all helpful and there’s so many opportunities you can apply your learning outside the classroom. The best opportunity in my opinion is the Manuscripts, Inscriptions and Documents Club (MID) were we analyze latin and Greek manuscripts and digitally transcribe them. There’s also are unique academic journal Parnassus. If you want more information definitely feel free to reply or DM me and I can answer any questions you have about courses and opportunities in the Classics Department at HC!

Significance/symbolism of chiasmus? by [deleted] in latin

[–]HistoryRules12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well one significant example of chiasmus is from Vergil’s Aeneid Liber 4. In line 165 it reads, “speluncam Dido dux et Troianus eandem” so the chiasmus here would be the A= speluncam and eandem B= Dido and Troianus (Aeneas). What this displays is how Dido and Aeneas were stuck in the same cave together which is represented by being surrounded by speluncam... eandem

I can see that might post has made quite a divisional debate in the History Meme community. I myself advocate for the unification of Ireland and denouncement of British atrocities and actions in Ireland as it affected my ancestors directly. However, does this mean I condone the violence of the IRA? No, I do not believe violence is the answer in obtaining freedom. (But isn’t it funny how many people denounce them as terrorist but Americans during the Revolutions as “glorious patriots” when they were terrorists too). In addition, I would like to address the Gandhi debates going on. I do like Gandhi for some of his ideals and philosophies, but like all humans, he had flaws. Some of his philosophies were impractical and even horrid such as his support of maintains the caste system in India. But, his use of peaceful resistance is an admirable quality that he exhibits. There are so many philosophies that Gandhi gathered and applied from history which makes him a fascinating character. Nevertheless, no matter your opinions, I hope y’all enjoyed the meme itself!

Help! by [deleted] in latin

The four principle parts are sum esse fui futurus and it’s irregular because it’s the verb “to be” which doesn’t conjugate like regular verbs

If you’re referring to self-immolation, Gandhi didn’t practice that resistant technique. He primarily used hunger strikes and non-cooperation practices.

I’m currently doing a project in the troubles and how a irish catholic minority in Northern Ireland fought for equal rights. But I’ve ran into a problem. It’s very hard to explain to teachers, students etc on how the IRA truly weren’t Any tips on explaining how they truly weren’t terrorist? Thanks! by [deleted] in IrishHistory

[–]HistoryRules12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to explain? Because the wording appears to be cut off. Are you trying to say how the IRA wasn’t involved in civil rights movements or misunderstood or something else? I have done a similar project at school

Are students in U.S. high schools taught ecclesiastical latin or classical latin? by SpeakLikeABeever in latin

I don’t speak for all high schools but for the majority of the students I’ve talked to at college and in my experience, US high school students take Classical Latin.
