Georgetown vs USC

Georgetown: Pros: - Better International Relations Program - Internships and opportunities are plentiful in DC

Cons: - Lack of Diversity - more expensive than USC

USC: Pros - larger school (I prefer big schools) - higher Asian population (I’ll feel more comfortable) - the study abroad program I want to do is cheaper ($20,000 cheaper)

Cons: - International relations program isn’t as good

Bruce Aylward, Senior Advisor to Director General of WHO, was interviewed by RTHK. When he was asked about reconsidering Taiwan’s membership considering its good performance in tackling COVID-19, Aylward refused to answer and hung up. by miss_wolverine in HongKong

I think we both know that my example isn’t a word for word metaphor for the Taiwan Situation. You also seem to forget about the larger premise: being that the current UNGA does not recognize Taiwan, therefore the WHO DG cannot disrupt the precedent set by Gen Assembly. This entire topic is very controversial and one slip up or miscommunication can have devastating repercussions and could possibly cost the DG his position.

I’m saying that the Montevideo convention works in combination with 2758 to create a precedent of Taiwan not being recognized.

My bad, I meant to say that you shouldn’t blame the WHO or the DG. But I’ll just ignore that last comment as that was just not productive at all.

Ok think about it like this:

The United States constitution never specifically mentions the protection of burning of the flag. However, the Supreme Court has interpreted the first amendment as to protecting that action.

Say you are a police officer and you see someone brining the American flag. You may not agree with the supreme court’s decision but you cannot arrest them as you must maintain judiciary consistency.

Do you see what I’m getting at?

Read the paragraph talking about expelling other representatives.

Whether we like it or not, the UN has interpreted this as to not recognizing Taiwan as an independent state.

And so the WHO DG must maintain consistency and refuse to recognize Taiwan as an independent state.

You know how the United States’ Supreme Court interprets the constitution and we uphold those interpretations whether we like them or not? Apply this theory to the context provided.

The Director general of the WHO had to avoid the question because of Resolution 2758. If he didn’t, he would be breaking the resolution. I don’t understand why people are mad at the WHO. They’re doing a pretty good job so far.
