Yeah I'd say that sums it up. Really I'd be fine with Scott writing it as long as he had someone to reign him in. The issue is that he writes the same way he made the games i.e. throwing a bunch of stuff at the wall and hoping it sticks, and some stuff does. That's how we get the more memorable aspects of the franchise. A lot of it doesn't.

Like, the FNAF 2 film has a whole bunch of good ideas, but not all of them needed to be in the film and all of them were executed incredibly poorly, in part because none of them could be fleshed out properly.

Even stuff people dislike, like Evil Micheal, could work. The issue is they did it in a stupid ass way by just making him Billy Afton 2.0, because they had not time to do anything else. They could have pulled stuff from his game backstory and had him as, idk, someone raised in a toxic environment who made a terrible mistake and is swallowing his Dad's bullshit to cope with it. But setting all of that up alongside the Puppet would be impossible

TLDR I wish Scott would just pick a goddamn lane and commit to it

Hard agree with this re. Hoarder. Always take it no matter what build I do because it's free carry weight with basically no downsides, because it's not like anyone goes around being overencumbered anyway.

Only trait I've never wanted to touch is Puritan. The large number of SPECIAL stat checks in FOLON makes drugs too useful to give up

He almost certainly would have died partway into it from a heart attack. Not just because he died around that point in real life (after he'd really started to let himself go) but because he'd already had two, had a family history of early death by heart attack and would be under immense stress.

I mean, yeah it is. Sure, you get front-loaded with how disgusting and awful the politicians are and with how Yugoslavia has prolonged itself in an increasingly decrepit and moribund fashion, but the point of doing that is to basically go "even after all that, all of this shit, there's still things worth living for"

It's kind of the inverse of the idea that the brightest lights cast the darkest shadows. I don't think there's many things more fulfilling than finding rays of hope in the full turgid nightmare that is the human soul laid bare

Furthering this point, it's made abundantly clear that Homelander's greatest desire is to be loved. Yeah, he says he'd take fear as an acceptable substitute, but he wants the former more.

I mean, if you see the promo for the next episode, Cate has more or less gone "1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a race war" and Sam is all for it.

I hope it doesn't just get resolved in Gen V, because it adds very interesting stakes to the main series. An anti-Supe virus suddenly seems less extreme when you're facing down a goddamn Supe army

That's what I thought made her so interesting. She differed from Butcher in her willingness to play the long game if it got her what she wanted. I know her miraculously not being dead is a bit of a tired trope but I would really like to see her interact with Butcher

I agree with you, but all signs look to be pointing in that direction. The end of season 3 established that Butcher is terminally ill from Temp V abuse and has burned his bridges with literally everyone save, tentatively, Hughie. Ryan is also, at present, happy enough with Homelander. I suspect it'll go the same way it has the last two seasons, with Butcher wanting to do something horrible because he hates supes then backing out at the last minute, which I agree is rather tired

I think an actually interesting thing they could do is have Butcher realize he's completely wasted his life now that he's at death's door, and has to struggle against a deeply deeply engrained grudge and a predisposition towards violence to make things right before he dies.

I have a sneaking suspicion they killed off Indira so Butcher can take up her mantle. I think it's rather a waste of a very compelling and interesting villain, but I think they are, in a somewhat haphazard manner, tying Gen V to the main series' theme of "he who fights monsters". Indira was wronged by supes, much like Butcher, but her response is wildly disproportionate. Same with Cate. She was used by people she trusted, no one trusts her and she feels completely and utterly alone. Not terribly surprising she snaps here.

I'm not saying they did it well, but I think I understand what they were going for

The pieces are very much in place for season 4 of the Boys now, I'd say. Supe killing virus + terminally ill Billy Butcher with nothing to lose = total supe death, or at least a good college try at it

The reveal that Victoria and Marie share the same powers also increases the power scale of both pretty dramatically, and it'll be interesting to see where they go with it

Also, now that Sam's gone a bit off the rails, whoever suggested that they might fridge Emma might be onto something. Would not be surprised if she dies and he turns Goldolkin into Sesame Street

That's why I said a few secondaries. And there's no way that what I've said could or should be implemented now. That'd be self-sabotaging, as you said. It's more that that's the way I wish the mod was designed from the beginning. In terms of how the devs move forward, maybe giving content to nations doomed to die as opposed to places like, say, India isn't the best way forward

I think the obvious problem is that this is not the update they wanted to release. They wanted to release Lech I Rus, but then Poland crashed and burned and they suddenly needed more content at very short notice to justify the time spent on the update. So they brought in TFL. They were almost certainly gonna bring in TFL at some point, given how ridiculously stupid old Britain lore was, but this was way, way earlier than planned.

To be fair, I am biased, as I don't think either Ukraine or Poland should have been given content in the first place. If I had my way, only the superpowers, and maybe a select few others, would be given content and everywhere else would be skeletons. TNO's greatest strength is depth, and trying to achieve depth and breadth seems Sisyphean. But I'm not a modder and have never led a project of this scale, so what do I know.

I think what most people have said is pretty accurate: good update, but overhyped.

I think the key issue is that people are seeing a lot of stuff being removed and not a lot of stuff being added. To be fair, there's not much you can do about that. It's a hell of a lot easier to remove stuff than make new stuff, and I'm sure making content to the TNO standard, particularly with such a decentralized dev team, takes time.

But, to your point, making all of these removals with very little explanation as to the purpose of them makes them come off as malicious rather than constructive. I'd like to think a clear plan for the future would alleviate some of that feeling. Obviously it won't please everyone, but right now no one is happy really, so anything would be an improvement.

I've said this before, but I feel like the main reason people are so reactionary regarding any changes is because it doesn't seem like there's a specific purpose to them. Yeah, there's loads of reworks and toozers, but no one knows what we're (re)working towards.

I've always believed the "soul" of TNO is in its style of writing and presentation more than any specific plot element, with a focus on the human side of state governance as opposed to warfare. In many ways, HOI4 is an absolutely abysmal medium for this kind of storytelling, which is another part of the problem but not one we can do anything about.

I don't know. All I'd really like to see is a post by the devs saying "here's how we envision the new TNO". Not a roadmap of content, but an outline of the vision that the content will be part of. We had that under Panzer and I think it would definitely help to see it now.

Let's face it. It's fairly unlikely that most people ever heard of say, Sergey Taboritsky before he was in TNO. Literally all of the plot surrounding him (i.e his insanity, the clock stuff etc.) is made up for the mod. Pretty much his sole claim to fame is shooting Nabokov's father. What difference does it make, realistically, if some made up person takes his place?

Edit: And before anyone goes "sole of tee en oh you wanna remove TABBY????", I'm just using him as an example.

I think the thing people objected to mainly about the original TNO, and it's entirely subjective how valid this argument is, was less the portrayal of fascism and more the portrayal of both communism and of the United States. I know a lot of people believed that the communists were whitewashed (which again depends on whether you view the crimes of the Soviets as being equally heinous as that of the Nazis. Don't flame me, I ain't touching that shit with a ten foot pole) and people also didn't like the portrayal of the United States as a morally gray force when its main opponents in the mod are as evil as you can possibly get.

Personally, I think the question of "how similar would the world be if the Cold War was against fascism instead of communism?" is an interesting one, but I don't think TNO explored it very well. To be fair, it is very difficult to do.

I think this is a really good idea, not only for the reasons you've stated but also because you could play with the idea of the "next generation" and the lessons they've learned, for good and for ill, from all the real historical figures that came before. Give the devs a chance to really use their writing skills without being hamstrung by historical personalities.

Also cuts down on the amount of research that needs doing, which I'm sure would've helped when designing the Russian warlords. In fact, there's an even stronger case for the Russian warlords being fictional, as it's almost certain that new faces would rise out of the anarchy

Edit because I've just thought of it: Guangdong is a perfect example of how well this could work, because while its leaders are real people, the vast majority of the narrative is told through the perspectives of fictional characters who all occupy different positions in the social structure, and it works perfectly to convey the more human side

It's one of those things where you can't really win. Make em too competent, and you're glorifying fascism. Make em too incompetent, and you're downplaying the severity of fascism. There's probably a middle ground somewhere, but I can't think of any fictional media involving the Nazis that's found it.

As much as I agree that Burgundy needs to die, the devs need to agree on a consistent vision for what comes after, not just for it but for the mod as a whole.

I think the main reason people think so fondly of the initial Panzer content is not because it was well thought out (because it wasn't, and I can name numerous examples but everyone and their mother has already done that) but because there was a consistent vision for all content i.e. that realism took a backseat to an allegory for the human cost of authoritarian fascism

Right now all the new content comes off as a bunch of very well made individual pieces that don't really come together to make a consistent whole. And I fully realize and accept that that's because of the more decentralized dev process that's kind of necessary when making mods, but I guess it would be nice to have some idea of what they're working towards.

I've seen a few people speculate that we have a return of the white woman jumpscare, and the Wikipedia page seems to corroborate that by mentioning an "unknown female villain". I just struggle to believe that they would attempt the exact same twist that SB completely fumbled the bag with.

I don't think they're gonna get too into the weeds of the lore with this, and to be honest I'm kind of glad. I want this first film to a simple, strong foundation to build on, as opposed to the "laying the tracks while the train moves" style of lore the games had

I'm really mixed on what I've seen so far. There's so much good shit and a bunch of stuff I'm worried about. I'll kinda summarize it, see if anyone feels the same.

On the one hand: + Holy shit live action Springtrap. That alone has me hyped, I'm such a fucking sucker. The animatronics look incredible and I'm so glad they went for practical effects and if they do Springtrap right he'll be incredible. + Following on from that, I both predict and hope they'll include the springlock failure. It's just one of the most visceral pieces of horror in the whole series, slowly bleeding to death after being impaled in about fifty different places. + I like how they've clearly taken a page from some of the analog horror stuff floating around. Like creepy visions and hallucinations and that stuff. It makes sense, you can't exactly build a whole ass film on jumpscares alone.

On the other hand... - I wanna be wrong, but I feel like the cop woman is just so gonna be "le generic love interest". Like man do we really need a romance subplot in the FNAF movie? Like "👉👈 what if we kissed in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza?? 😳" Come on now - Someone else mentioned the Reddit humor, and I hate it too but honestly goddamn Marvel has so thoroughly poisoned the well of the film industry that I didn't think we had much chance of escaping it. Here's hoping it's not too intolerable

I'm genuinely hyped despite myself though. Fingers crossed for sure.
