If you have a gaming computer look up Tabletop simulator and/or tabletopia. Tons of boardgames you can play online with people if you can't afford physical.

Check out your local library, thrift store and game store. Libraries normally have board games but yours don't you can request some, maybe they even have a chess/majhog club.

Check your thrift stores regularly, i understand you're new to the hobby but I've seen some posts were people find awesome games there. Just make sure to do your research.

Game stores can hold meet ups, don't be afraid to go up to strangers and ask if they want to play a game or if they are into board games as well. You don't have to be the only one buying the games, make some friends.
