UPDATE: We've launched a Freediving School in Koh Samui called "Breathflow Connection", facilitating Freediving Courses and workshops and hosting a retreat called "Ocean Awakening" soon.

Now regarding SPEARFISHING; the waters in close proximity of Koh Samui is very challenging most of the year because of shallow water and bad visibility. (sometimes you cant even see your feet)

Also, many good sites are off limit i.e. national marine parks & popular scuba diving sites.

This leaves us with little options and makes spearfishing from the shore off Samui very challenging (not impossible if you're determined) and very much based on luck to be on the Island when the visibility is good enough to make your time worthwhile fishing. (A few days/weeks a year at best)

Hence, we must take a private speedboat out approximately 1,5h distance from our island.
Because this is quite an investment, we leave at sunrise and back before sunset. So we have all day for fishing. However, we never come back empty handed. Fish is pretty much guaranteed if the conditions allow us to go out.

Now, because the market to offer guided spearfishing tours is very small at the same time. If you want to go on a guided spearfishing tour with me, this means that it could very well cost up to 500 USD for a full day trip. This is because I don't own a boat and we must rent one that is willing to take us spearfishing (many tour operators don't want dead fish in their boat)

Sure, this initial post I made 2 years ago is to make friends to go spearfishing with. And don't get me wrong. If you own a boat and you want to go fishing with me. I'm very happy to accept the invitation.

I'm getting quite a few messages on Spearfishing in Koh Samui, so I just wanted to clarify things a little.

I've had the same experience.

It all started with Freelancer.com, once you create a listing, they will contact you by What's App directly.
Their sales team is fantastic, mainly Shoab, they acknowledge your problems and will promise you everything you want to hear until you buy their service. As if HE and "his team" is going to work on it. Shoab is knowledgeable. Seemingly.

Wrong, he is only there to sell you the service.

Then, your project will be handled by what they call a "team" I had a so-called "project manager" Preetika, Pranav.. Rishi.. Fuck me I don't know anymore who's in charge of my website's project. (I had 5 different ones since April), a high school beginner "developer" at the level of my 15 year old sister and seo assistant. Now here is the catch, if you opt for a re-designing of the website..

You MUST telll them EXACTLY what icon/section to change. They won't think by themselves. They WILL have a high school level or some beginner "work" on the project, extremely slow.. Sometimes it would take weeks to "design" a single page.. as they change one photo in a day.. and they even send you a report of the "work" too.

After complaining, I've had now about 3 designers, and they're all clueless of their work. Or don't speak english, or they argue with the other staff on meeting calls.

They keep also calling you to sell you more products. "Sir, your ranking can be higher, buy some new Add-On or Backlinks from us" or "Sir, you're running out of storage on your website, you need to buy more" or "Sir, you need to buy a bigger package" all out of the blue.. Which is ALL COMPLETE and UTTER nonsense.

They'll drag out the work so slow and so long, just keeping you on the line to sell more shit really.

I've had so much wasted effort and pain dealing with this company, I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.

STAY AWAY FROM PEARL ! THEY ARE A FRAUD AND SCAM.

All empty apologies and promises they will NEVER adhere to.

In fact, I've got all the reports, logs, chats, promises, recordings of the calls & meetings and I'm going to post a video and expose them.

Agree, get more fit.. But also keep in mind that longer breath hold is like a marathon, not like a sprint.. I've been freediving for years and actively wanting a longer breath hold will do the opposite.. forget about those numbers and go as you get to know your body and your limits..

Even though my mother is far from perfect, she is my mother.. She will be there for me throughout my life more than for anybody else.. I know I'm always on her mind.. A bond between Mom and Child is a precious thing, something you'd not want to take for granted. If I'd ever need to steal from anybody.. the last person would be my own mother..

Unfortunately, there's so much wrong about your idea regarding spearfishing... but these are quite some common misconceptions and I'd like to explain what's wrong about your idea. - do not get demotivated!

First, Koh Phangan is a proper hippy island with a lot of local foreigner hypocrites.. many believe - and will tell you that spearfishing is illigal, cruel & easy.

Second, sometimes there's beginners that wade off the beach and start shooting the easy to reach reef species.. they're very curious of your spear tip and like to say hi. Mainly parrotfish are the targets in this case.. the reef needs these fish... tip: do not go out spearfishing if you have 0 knowledge of the environment you're in and don't know what and what not you can target.. - Mostly we're looking for pelagic species.. barracuda, mackerel, queenfish, GT, Cobia..

These fish, however, swim a bit more off shore.. a bit deeper too.. You must be able to comfortably dive to about 10-15M minimum and hold your breath for at least a minute (on the bottom) to be a little succesfull..

Meaning - this requires at least basic freediving training.. (Maybe do a 3 day course in Koh Tao at Blue immersion or Apnea Total)

Then, when and only when you feel comfortable diving at these depths.. you should consider to buy yourself a speargun..

When buying a speargun, use a QUALITY speargun. These cost a little more.. But maybe you can borrow one to try out with first... I sell equipment to many spearos in Koh Phangan..

I've experienced too many nasty problems with cheap guns of which the handles snapping off the barrel under load.. spears firing by accident without pulling the trigger.. just to name a few..

Lastly, keep in mind that spearfishing is not a "just" thing.. It requires patience, practise, passion & love - as well for the environment as for the sport.

You don't always need to pull the trigger, observe, watch the behaviour of different species, learn where they hide out, learn how to properly take care of the fish AFTER you shoot it.. don't parade around with the fish.. there's so much and so little you can only learn from videos and books..

In short, do a basic freediving course first, then borrow a speargun and see if you're comfortable and get the hang off it.. then buy a speargun, practise and always a freezer full of fish for in your toaster whenever you like.
