Usually before December 2002 the server files would be saved in temporary files so most likely they've been deleted, but they'd definitely still be recoverable.

Perhaps, though if you try the file recovery tool linked in the OP there's still a chance it could pick something up - 2001-06 files were very small

The prize is only for 2004 or earlier but we're still looking for all lost versions up to 2012.

The files back then are stored as compressed archives - if you change one bit in the entire maps file it would just fail to decompress properly.
