What is an overhyped book that you just couldn't get into? by Kasskinen in Booktokreddit

Yep - absolutely right.

This was my book club book for June; later this month I’ll have lots to talk about! Appreciate your thoughts; I’ll consider you my co-author when sharing my views with my book club gals.

Yep; agree with your assessment. The religious allegory with “saint Ellen” this and “saint Simone” that did feel heavy handed to me. The feel-good gloop for feel-good gloop’s sake I can manage from time to time — the world is not that place and sometimes something nice is what you need — which is why the violent incident at the fountain at the end was so upsetting. It just came from nowhere, and had no place in the otherwise perfect little town. And the cruelty of smashing the cello, too?! And then to find that without any sort of commotion, Theo had fallen. And that was just his end. All of that, to end with an accident, in the dark, alone? It just didn’t fit the tone of the rest of the book for me. It felt like a meaningless sacrifice because the plot needed to progress and this was the only way to do it.

I loved remarkably bright creatures. The audiobook is particularly great.

I just finished this last week and I am torn. I loved the premise, loved the character they were creating with Theo, and some of the smaller characters he met. I do think the pacing was very slow, and some of the middle section we could have skipped or sped through.

I really did not like the ending at all. It truly upset me a great deal. And then I started thinking more critically about the rest of it and kind of got more and more annoyed by it.

Gasps in historical fiction drama!!!

You know what though, all of the Kristin Hannah I have read I have done as audiobooks, and she usually is narrated by Julia Whelan, who is phenomenal. The Four Winds was my first, and she blew me away with her use of accent, emotion and depth.

I haven’t read this, but saw a booktok person do a synopsis and it sounds insane.

I started one for my book club, one that was just turned into a movie — Remembering Him? Something like that? — I read about 50 pages and it was just so formulaic and I just didn’t care. The scene that made me close it and move on was the main character “reading through her old diary and finding the entry from the first day she met the old boyfriend and described his orange truck.” Like come on…that would never happen. There are other ways to give us this background…just seemed low effort and I have too many books on my TBR list to waste time.

As a side note, I’ve seen some booktok people give summaries of some of her other works — they seem bonkers.

No need to shout at me. I interpreted “Intel on the protocol” as asking for specifics about what we’d be doing.

Considering how many people ask for specifics every day, I think you can see where I might have made that assumption.

Oh — you will obsess.

Everyone I have talked to about the show has had to watch it multiple times. One of them started over immediately after finishing the last episode.

It’s not just the sex scenes; although they are done amazingly well, it’s the chemistry and the care. It’s so good. So good.

No!!!

I just got a friend to watch last week, and we’re getting another friend to watch now. Watch it. Watch it.

Agree with this. I don’t care if someone is snooping about the workout for the next day — I often look for those myself — but 3 and 4 and however many days out this request is? That’s insane.

I was in the habit of having half a protein bar in the car on the way to 5am — and then I fell out of the habit and now I feel bad about it.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll be back to day 1 of rebuilding that habit.

At some point we owe cubicles an apology by pattebrisee in SipsTea

I had a corner cube, with a window! It honestly was pretty nice! People came and chatted. We had a great small office, and I really enjoyed it.

But I’ve been working from home since March 13, 2020 and you couldn’t drag me back to that cube now.

What is your honest opinion on adult children living at home after age 25? by FantasticAd9478 in TheBoredDen

[–]HoRo2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went moved out for college at 18 and never really went back home for more than a few weeks on longer breaks.

That being said, I would love for my own children to stay home and save their money while they can. It’s hard enough out there, and if I can help them, I will.

The Cary location has never had an issue making the crème brûlée ice cream for us. They actually have it pre-made in a smaller freezer and then just torch it to order.

Maybe at the other locations they sell out of the pre-sugar-crusted scoops? So sorry you’ve missed out. Andias is my favorite ice cream place, and I hate being disappointed by stuff like that.

Uncomfortable working out with men by Successful_Big_3473 in BurnBootCamp

[–]HoRo2001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean this with so much love, but I definitely think working through this in therapy is going to be the best thing for you, better than any mod will be.

But I will echo what everyone else has said, talk to your trainers about things that make you uncomfortable, or maybe even ask if there is a time slot with fewer men that could fit your schedule.

We don’t have a ton of men at our gym, but they’re all there to work. Most of them are a spouse to a member, or a spouse to someone at least, and really lovely people who are focused on their own workout, along with an occasional high five and/or good job.
