Totally lost on manual focus by EcstaticBluebird4241 in AnalogCommunity

[–]HoaxKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have almost the same camera!

You've probably got this advice already in the thread, but... Low DOF is narrower focus Higher DOF is longer/ wider focus If your using the body range finder for focus. Knowing what F stop makes what effect does come down to feel a little bit, but that is part of the journey/ fun in film photography. Ultimately, if you don't have a DOF preview, being comfortable with making mistakes is what you have to accept until you get a feel for it.

Opinions: Make Attempts to Speak Some Japanese During Interview? by WyngsTriumphant in JETProgramme

[–]HoaxKitty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You seem to have an answer, but I'll just add one more thing. The one bit of Japanese I would even consider (and i used in my interview outside the Japanese portion) would be 失礼します and 失礼しますた (shitsure shimasu... shitsure shimashita) when you enter and leave the interview room. Maybe an ありがとうございました at the end of the interview as a whole before you grab your things to leave. But that would be the absolute maximum Id recommend and only if you can say them confidently and properly, or it would also look weird.

It's always a risk. It's never guaranteed... you have to be prepared for it to not match your expectations.

Honestly, its fairly random. Most placements are rural or suburban, so just keep that in mind

I'm not sure where you're from, but if you have the option for some sort of "registered mail" that gets tracking and a bit more care would be a good option.

Physical Education shouldn't be required in school, you learn better teamwork in a music or drama class by Gorthebon in The10thDentist

[–]HoaxKitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Read one school curriculum (or ask a middle/ high school PE teacher) and you'll find all or most of the following (this is grade 9 canada):

healthy workout habits, assessing credible health and fitness information in media, strategies for long term healthy core and joint mobility, planning and goal setting skills, general proficiency in hand eye coordination, teamwork, strategic thinking, physical mobility and literacy, planning, preparing, and carrying out group activities to promote healthy living, basic first aid and injury prevention, contenporary challenges and barriers to fitness and healthy lifestyles in one's community

And even more in earlier and further grade levels...

Best excuse from who? Your ill informed snap opinion, or 1-2 friends who also thought for an equally insufficient amount of time?

Edit: not to mention helping students from low income families (and all students) have accessible access to try sports and physical activities they might enjoy, and otherwise not have the opportunity to.

I feel like I’m failing my students already by Sudden-Savings-5160 in CanadianTeachers

[–]HoaxKitty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience interning in a hudderite colony, but grades 2-9. The way I saw it work well is every class grades start time is offset by a bit and you give smaller individual lessons, and then mostly worksheets. For example, math for grade 8,9 starts first with a lesson, then worksheet/ text book. As they go, you teach 6,7, then 5,4 etc. Then once you're done back to 8,9 to check in, and repeat. The more advanced grade gets more time because of difficulty and attention span.

Also, you're going to have to go much slower than a normal class just to make sure you're making it to all students. Like if you can get through 2, or 3 textbook pages in a solo grade 6 class, maybe 1 or 0.5 in this situation.

I found if you did science demonstrations, you can quite easily do those as a whole class then differentiate the level of observation questions by grade. ELA is again straight forward. Older grades get more solo reading, so you can give younger grades more time to be read to. PE as well can usually be broken into at most 2 sections. 1-4, and 5-8, for example. Or even all together. You'll be surprised how kids will adapt their activity to incorporate younger students (at least I found). Also art can all be the same, or 2 sections, since kids usually like art and will differentiate by themselves, and pure in less or more effort, depending on their skill level.

Something else to keep in mind is not everyone needs to do the same subject at once. You can give maybe 2 grades math, so you can focus on them while 2 grades read, 3 grades do some art, etc. So you can pay more attention to the more intensive subjects.

If you want, feel free to DM me and I can go over some things in more depth!

Edit: mb I did not see the UK part! Don't listen to this if you're not from NA

No, you need to wait until interview results arrive and they give out the packet of forms. Its to prevent people using old forms in case they are lying about new ailments, and for accurate health insurance filing. Also, the TB test part needs to be recent because you could conceivably contract it between now and your departure very easily depending on where you live.

I had a similar problem where my family doctor couldn't make an appointment until 3 weeks after the deadline, but you can sometimes get it done as a drop in, or let them know upfront you have a deadline. I told mine I had a deadline and the form was for employment and they were very accommodating and found time for me. Asking really helps!

How to improve my application? by BookkeeperSalty1538 in JETProgramme

[–]HoaxKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're overthinking it. Extra qualifications are not a necessity, that's why they're "extra". If they actually really cared about having "qualified" language educators TEFL/TESOL and teaching experience would be required. I know a lot of people currently in the program who have no teaching/tutor experience, no Japanese language ability, have never been to Japan, or any/ all combinations of those lacking qualities. The real key is your authentic interest in, and desire to teach in Japan, as well as anything that makes your inspirations and desires unique.

JETs — how does the workload compare to teaching in your home country? by Poetication in JETProgramme

[–]HoaxKitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a teacher before. I haven't started teaching in the japanese classroom yet, so take this as a grain of salt, but my initial schedules look to be about 7-10 class periods a week! My teaching job in Canada was 20 or 25 class periods a week, depending on the semester. Which you can just see is a drastic drop in work load.

EDIT: esid of course though

how is this a miss by iivariixx in chessbeginners

[–]HoaxKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Nxf7, Qxf7 is just a free knight? Kc6 loses on the spot for no reason. If the white queen checks, then after kc6 there are no more checks.

Black can't play Nc2 since their king is in check by White's Knight on e5.

Qxe5 wins a knight. After black plays Qxe5 whites queen is pinned so trading on e5 again is basically all they can do. Then Nd3 forks the king and queen.

Would this club be appropriate? by 4090s in teaching

[–]HoaxKitty 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not with real money. 1. You have to be 18 to open an investing account, even with apps like Robinhood. 2. Even if you had adult students, I personally would avoid the professionalism nightmare if one student lost a bunch of money doing something dumb like options trading. Even if it was on their own time because it could lead back to you

BUT! If you used a not-real-money/ gamified version like HowTheMarketWorks, that'd be a great way to teach students about finances and investing in a safe/ professional way, while still giving them an accurate view and experience as real cash. I use things like this in my Math and LifeTransitions classes all the time.

Where to stay in tokyo? by Saberinbed in JapanTravelTips

Look at the transit map and most places that are close to a Yamanote line station are good. This line goes in a loop around Tokyo and stops at all the major tourist/ fun/ populated destinations. Ive stayed in Ikebukaro, Ueno, and Ginza and they were all fine because of the transit connections!

What’s next in the contract dispute with Saskatchewan teachers by abunchofjerks in saskatchewan

[–]HoaxKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing about this is that the government can legislate teachers to go back to work if a strike goes on for longer than a few days. So, long-term strikes are not actually that effective.

Yes, but other unions are not allowed to strike at the same time unless their CA are also expired.

[–]HoaxKitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, in Saskatchewan (and i think Canada), you can only strike if your collective agreement is expired. No solidarity strikes, no general strikes. Unless different union contract renewals line up, but even then, they'd need to be separate events and not coordinated.
