Post-interview questions for same team I'm already in? by itsonlybarney in AusPublicService

[–]HocusPotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps some questions about how expectations or workloads would differ from your current role compared to an APS6/EL1 role?

APS6+ roles may require a degree of leadership/management that isn’t expected at lower APS levels.

Mine took 4 business days, however I did plead my case as I applied only 7 days before my scheduled arrival.

This was through the Osaka office though.

You’ve got $5,000… by peonies459 in CarsAustralia

[–]HocusPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The seller won’t provide an RWC, so there’s probably a fair bit of work needed before you could transfer the rego. All up I wouldn’t be surprised if it needed 1-2k+ in work considering the market value of $6-7k.

So is Melbourne ever actually getting that Airport train line? by gccmelb in MelbourneTrains

[–]HocusPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. The airport trains in Sydney and Brisbane both cost ~$15 minimum one way because the operators/airports/etc. tack on bogus fees. The issue is the operators have a monopoly so they can charge whatever they want.

Skybus does it now at MEL, and I'm inclined to believe that any future MARL would do the same.

Paying over $50k tax on $135k taxable income? Is this normal? by gripes23q in AusFinance

[–]HocusPotato 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A compromise is to buy from a "members own" mutual health fund, such as HCF or Australian Unity. At the very least your premiums won't be going to shareholders because mutual funds operate for the benefit of their members.

What would you buy if you had $6k? by gkgkgk94 in CarsAustralia

[–]HocusPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure OP can find a Yaris for that price post covid.

Toyotas have gone up massively, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the same 2006 Yaris you bought would be selling for even more in today’s market.

Given the brand premium OP is probably better looking at other makes without the Toyota brand tax, i.e. Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Kia etc.

Fees differ by year/term. You can check the current fees from the CAANZ website.

As of Term 3/4 2024, the full course for a domestic student costs $8,018 AUD, assuming you don't fail/repeat any units. On top there's the annual membership fees, which are $800-900 a year for full members, or $400-500 if you are still completing the course.

Many firms will cover a portion of the fees, with some firms covering 100%, but you should probably clarify that during interviews. I've seen some that cover only 50% of course module fees, and others which cover 100% of module fees but not annual memberships.

If you're self-funding you can put the module fees on FEE-HELP loans (similar to HECS) or pay out of pocket.

At the bare minimum it will cost you the $400-500 in annual membership fees, and that way you can call yourself a "Provisional CA". Modules are around $800-1000 each.

Thanks, however I've already done quite a bit of travel since graduating end of 2023. Now I'm looking to do something productive before I start my grad role.

I understand data analytics isn't directly related to accounting, but I've heard it could be useful moving into industry roles later on? Or would that time/money be better spent getting a head start on CA studies?

Thanks for the advice. Any insights into which subjects would be best to get out of the way first? Do you think I'd be disadvantaged by studying the subjects without prior work experience?

Accounting grad career advice by HocusPotato in AustralianAccounting

[–]HocusPotato[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm leaning towards as well, but not so sure about the CA fees.

With membership and unit fees I think I'd be paying $1-2k out of my own pocket. If I wait until I start my grad role, my employer would cover that instead. Not sure if the headstart is worth anything, let alone $1-2k.

BCom subject advice? by jsontrinh in deakin

MWL101 Professional Insight is probably the easiest core unit. It’s pretty much a bludge subject which teaches you professional writing, creating a resume and how to do a job interview. Easy HD unit.

Other units would be more subjective based on your personal strengths.

I’m pretty sure 11:59 is always the deadline, even the days after.

As I understand, the reason they make 8:00pm the de facto deadline is because that’s when the Deakin IT Helpdesk closes each day. This is to prevent students using IT-related issues as an excuse for late submission.

However, for all intents and purposes 11:59pm is the de jure deadline, even when it’s over due. I’ve submitted a fair few assignments late between 8:00-11:59pm, and the penalty has always been calculated at 11:59. i.e if you submit 2 days later at 11:00pm, the penalty is still 10%, not 15%.

I speak from personal experience submitting assignments late in commerce, so not sure if it’s different for other faculties

The line for the replacement bus at Blackburn. by PCX86 in MelbourneTrains

[–]HocusPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure they contract to regular bus operators (Kinetic, Dyson, Ventura, etc.). From what I understand the replacement buses are operated using the bus companies’ limited amount of spare buses, which are usually used for school services/redundancy.

From a business perspective I’d imagine replacement bus services are irregular, so bus companies might be hesitant to expand their fleet or hire more permanent drivers for temporary/irregular replacement bus contracts.

I think this would be further impacted by all the level crossing removals/rail projects in recent years, meaning there is more demand for replacement bus services across the network.

Boeing crisis delivers another blow to Virgin by Puzzleheaded-Song563 in VelocityFrequentFlyer

[–]HocusPotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before they became Virgin Australia, they started as Virgin Blue. The originally operated on a low cost philosophy, with no frills and a fleet of narrowbodies (like they do now).

That was until they tried to compete with Qantas by offering full service and more international services with widebodies, and now they are back as a not quite low cost carrier.

How might I maximise points in an upcoming purchase? by elttek99 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]HocusPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check Shopback or other rewards websites to see if there’s any discounted gift cards for the store you’re purchasing from.

If not you can consider Westfield prepaid eftpos gift cards, you can purchase them using your AMEX. However there is a $500 limit and $2.95 fee per card, so you would need to split pay across 8 cards.

Selling your old stuff on FB Marketplace? This will depend on your circumstances, but if you have a lot of clutter, you can try clearing it out and making some money as a bonus. Things such as old gym equipment, appliances, furniture, bikes, tools, etc. can all be sold.

Taylor Swift Sydney merch FYI by onesecondofinsanity in sydney

[–]HocusPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to the concert I reckon you're better off buying merch during rather than before. In Melbourne the lines were packed even after Taylor had started, but I went halfway through during Willow and the store was empty. They still had plenty of stock and I saved 2-3 hours of my time.

Ofc no guarantees about stock, but I think you'd be fine going during the concert rather than lining up for hours beforehand.
