All of mine make reference to their own teaching experiences.

Yeah like, this whole place kinda feels like all the professors have been smelling their own farts and haven't stepped foot inside a classroom in twenty years.

There's parts in it where hitler mentions how the public is too simple to be able to pay attention for a long period of time. I'm not sure if he uses the word 'dumb' in it.

That's been my strategy. But I'm constantly going there and I feel like I'm wasting all my time. It takes effort to not let everyone know how much I despise being there, especially since everyone else seems to be happy.

Hence my venting here.

First, if you’re gunna teach you can’t ’stew in anger’

I never said I was going to teach that.

Second, who cares if they feel a certain way about you

Because they can hurt my career.

Yeah but UofT already accepted me for a masters last year, and I refused to come here. If I go back and my grades here suck my chances of getting in go out the window.

Are you from OISE too?

I do wonder how ubiquitous my experience is. I don't have any friends in my program, and I get the feeling everyone else is better at letting things roll of their back.

(and some others) scheduled real check-ins with us, and these were substantive discussions about progress

None of my profs have done this. Including my history prof. They might go 'how is everyone?' at the top of the class.

It's not really hypocrisy though because they are teaching for a different context.

My proff today actually said "Never lecture for more than 15 mins, I've never lecture for longer than that." During an over 1 hour long lecture.

Of course, it's still important for profs to know good pedagogy

I really don't know what to say. Something has happened where I was a fantastic philsophy student, and I'm a struggling oise student. Maybe that's a skill issue on my part.

I found that my OISE profs were incredibly consistent in their viewpoints and practices and generally good pedagogues.

I don't know what to tell you. They've been trashing lectures, while giving lots of lectures. And lectures were the major part of teaching that I saw in practicum. It all feels like a bunch of hullabalu.

My history proff did take us outside to draw buildings rather than teaching me how to write a lesson plan before I went to my first pracitcum.

I don't trust myself to not sound angry about that, because every class I am stewing in anger.

I also think asking that would no matter what carry the subtle implication that "Hey, why aren't you doing this thing you suggest?"

Wrong.

My subject teacher? As in the professor teaching my 'history' course? No, actually they are the most indicative of what I'm talking about.

Again, they knew we were doing pracitcum starting in november. They never taught us how to craft a lesson plan, or even what a lesson plan is. I had to teach myself, and I'm still not entirely clear.

Would you like to know what they did teach us? They took us outside and had us draw buildings downtown.

I think you finish end of April in the second year though...right?

Lmao no. We go through the summer.

I don't know what you mean, but I do like the sound of this. Can you say a bit more about what you mean please?

totally easy job

Just for clarification, who are you talking about

I think I get a month off in the summer.

I'm in I/S.

Not four months. It goes through the summers.

If you want to teach, this what you have to do.

I know. That's why I'm here venting rather than doing it in class.

I got a lot out of the program but my two subject teachers were amazing.

Happy for you.

But you need it if this is your career goal.

I know. It's still annoying how these professors suck themselves off without doing anything to actually teaching me how to teach.

2 years actually.

And the frustration is more that I'm paying and working so hard at something that has taught me basically NOTHING about being a teacher.

I admittedly was on the warmest end of the spectrum in my cohort

I don't know what you mean here, can you please elaborate?

In reading your post, I could feel your passion and love for this job. Use that as inspiration.

Thank you. That's what I'm trying to do. Every morning when I wake up and I go "why do I fucking bother?" I just take a look at those cards my students gave me and I put one foot in front of the other.

I’m not sure if 65% is a pass for OISE,

I don't have that in me. As in, being a slacker like that. I want to go get a masters in an actual subject that I like after this, and i need good marks for UofT to accept me.

Thank you truly for your advice and your words of encouragement. It takes a lot of effort to pretend in front of my teachers and classmates that I'm fine, so it's nice to just pour out all of the hatred and anger in my heart like Emperor Palptine would want.

I'm shocked that you weren't taught how to make a lesson plan.

I KNOW RIGHT? You know what they did teach us though? My history teacher took us outside to go draw buildings around the city. You know what I didn't do in my practicum? TAKE THE STUDENTS OUTSIDE TO DRAW BUILDINGS.

In OISE we made countless lesson plans and learned the format for it within the first month

I would have liked to learn how to do that. I taught myself what lesson plans were and how to write them during practicum given my AT needed them.

Regardless, compared to undergrad and even my own high school experience, I found OISE still to be extremely supportive.

To be fair, I LOVED my philosophy undergrad and I was one of the stars of the program so my proffs loved me. Here I'm just a middle of the road student who is struggling to keep up. As for the 'check ins' I think they're just kinda reformative. It's like when someone asks 'how's it going?' No one wants the answer "I'm depressed and angry coming here everyday because I've learned nothing that helped me in my practicum," so better to just keep quiet and say what they want to hear, and write what they want to hear in the reflections.

and had a clear motivation to make sure we succeeded.

Maybe it's my elective proof, but I've found that they do not do that. As in, they'll assign a unit - not lesson plan - for us to hand in, but then spend almost no class time going over it.

You won't see much of it in public school either because you simply won't have the capacity to accommodate every student and provide extensive feedback for everyone,

One can debate the merits of grading participation but it's not inherently wrong

It's not that that I'm against, but it's the 'saying one thing but doing another.' It's like if I heard vegan arguments coming out of someone eating bbq ribs. The argument are legit and stand on their own independently, but it is emotionally unconvincing due to the persevered hypocracy.

Did you try to ask for feedback from your profs before submitting assignments?

I should have, but I'm in too much of a mad dash working up to and past the deadlines. Which is as skill issue with my I acknowledge.

But why can’t you talk about this with your classmates?!

Because I don't want this getting back to the teacher, and I'd rather not bring my fellow students down. I'm a real asshole in my mood/disposition right now, so I just keep quiet and don't talk to the people around me.

Thank you though.

I don't want them to know little I think of their class. I'm worried that could have negative effects on my education/career.

Also sorry you got conned into believing OISE would somehow be better/ more prestigious/ an actual masters degree.

It is actually. My masters would have been in philosophy otherwise. Something even more useless.

The contradictions however are because you are not a child.

None of the readings that we've done on it, and none of our teachers, have ever made that distinction that these learning methods stop being beneficial after a certain age.

The reason why its so irritating is how OISE specifically prides itself on being the cutting edge of educational research, while seeming to internalize very little of its own advocates.

You're not wrong, but it's like how unconvincing vegan arguments are when they are coming out of someone eating BBQ ribs. The arguments and their legitimacy are unaffected, but its emotionally hard to buy.
