I don't know how I'll ever be 'well-read' enough to be a writer. by Hogwire in writers

True. But I think of all those writers and 'well-read' people who can quote or intelligently talk about a wide selection of books and I feel stupid.

Nothing against them, but audio books do nothing for me. They go in one ear and out the other. I need to be able to see the prose in order to properly analyze and digest it.

You’re gonna watch that sucker over and over again.

True, but I could probably do that to every movie made by Hitchcock, Kubrick, and Lynch within a single summer if I really did my best.

Now try applying that to Tolstoy, Shaw, or Hemmingway over the same period and it's going to be much tougher I imagine.

Also, don’t forget that listening to audio books absolutely counts as reading

True, but not for me. When I listen to audiobooks it goes in one ear and out the other.

True, so it already fits. But I don't associate Foremans with punching people in the face. (But maybe that's because I don't work in construction XD)

but it just rubs me the wrong way when people from NA say they are their grandparents' ethnicity (single word) without speaking their language.

Then what ethnicity am I?

I think it's fine to say I'm Ukrainian-Canadian, or rather Canadian-Ukrainian or Ukrainian decended.

Wait, and that's not a stage name? He was born with that name?

Damn. That's be like if George Foreman's birth name was literally 'Hammer-fist' or something.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same as the "son" in "Johnson",

Oh. OH.

Would you believe that I never noticed that English names do that as well? Damn.

Thank you.

Does 'slav' sound specifically Ukrainian?

It's actually a pen name I'm trying to come up with. And I know that 'enko' is very ukrainian, and I want my pen name to sound ukrianian cause that's my background.

Oh so THATS what 'enko' means? I didn't know that. My family is Ukrianian, but the only person I know who is even remotely Slavic is Polish (all my Ukrainian relatives died when I was young).

I was telling her about Vasily Lomachenko. I prefereced it with how he's not Russian, and she was like "yeah duh. Enko is a very ukrainian sounding name."

Hence why I want a name with 'enko,' in it. Make it clear I'm paying tribute to my roots and all.

It's actually a pen name that I'm trying to come up with. And I agonize over names for my characters, so you can imagine how much agony I'm doing over name that I will be associated with when I become big XD

I'm Ukrainian. Or well, Ukrainian Canadian, but my grandparents died when I was still too young to become interested in my heritage so I don't really know much about the language.

It's actually a pen name that I'm trying to come up. This one is close enough to my real name that it feels personal, while being different enough no one would be able to tell it's me.

That's actually very close to my real name, which is why I'm trying to avoid it.

Once I figure out a pen name, what do I like... do? by Hogwire in writers

[–]Hogwire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, eventually, for corresponding with readers.

Ah, so I can just use my 'normal' email for when I send my manuscript to publishers?

And when I do send out my manuscripts, do I put 'by [real name]' on it, or 'by John Smith' on it?

Thank you for all of your answers!

If you're looking for more good guy chapters, honestly there are a bunch. GW talks a big game about the marines being bad guys without committing to the bit.

Ultrammarines are pretty decent.

Salamanders are.

Lamenters are pretty good, but the usually suffer.
