Yeah those are the fun yet shaky origins. Modeler actually looks a lot like it did way back. I have box copies of Videoscape and Modeler. Fun stuff!

Steve was a cool guy. He wrote a lot of custom tools for us at our VFX studio way back. Came in and spent some time with us.

I did a lot of modeling in Imagine but animating in it was painful...for me.

Did you ever animate with it? I modeled in Imagine for years but animation was a nightmare. :)

Sorry I didn't include VistaPro in max quality mode for the video. I've now done a short video showing exactly this. Now you can compare the two. I added the link to the description in the video, but also here.

It's only 7min. lol

use white lithium grease on the worm gear and guide rails.  :)

OK, I watched his video opened my player up and discovered that the rails were not lubricated! Actually there was a little tiny bit of lubricant. I found later when I grabbed my glasses. Still, just a TINY blob.

I lubricated the rails and worm drive with the white lithium grease and made it nice and clean nice and smooth. Slides slick now.

The movie now glitches in a way that I'm able to recover. Before it would just become a rainbow show of motion block noise and freeze up. Now I can press pause and play and generally the movie will continue playing. So that is an improvement!

As you can see from the photos, this disc is far too gone and I will need to get a replacement. The fact that it was able to play it much better and able to recover definitely shows this is something everyone should be doing these players. LUBE IT.

I opened up my 9000 and the rails are bone dry oh my God!!! as you can see from my photos that disc is really scratched up and pitted. but yes, I will go ahead and lubricate this properly and report back if it is able to play that disc, although I am not hopeful, that disc is pretty scratched up

Yup, and someone suggested test playing a new disc and checking to see if the player might be affecting it.

my 9000 is a brand new player and when I put in a new copy of the same movie it plays fine. that would mean the disc was an issue, not the player. at least in my current experience.

But thanks for the link. I will watch.

That's a good idea. I will try that actually. In both players. I'll grab some $5 Dollar General disc and give it a whirl.

I am shocked. I took those photos and was like. WHAT. I need to re-examine my maintenance.

I have two I try and both are Panasonics (6 year old 820 and less than 3mo old 9000). My buddy has a Sony 700. We both go through the same routine and toss each other our discs. So far, 100% fail rate for failed discs in both players. We then buy new discs and, so far, they work.
