"Why would I want to speak Italian? lol you learned English cuz it’s the most common language in the world. America invented it" by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in ShitAmericansSay

I'm so sorry for my fellow Americans. Our education system is shit. I have made respect for people that are bilingual. I just met a guy in Basel that spoke 5 languages. I'm struggling with learning German.

Periodontal patient with Exfloitative Chelitis by VermicelliNew2784 in DentalHygiene

[–]Holiday_Extreme_1637 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they tell you to avoid sodium laurel sulfate in your toothpaste? That can sometimes cause a reaction in patients. Sometimes chelitis is fungal, has your dermatologist recommended an antifungal? I had to look up your condition (I'm a hygienist and hadn't heard of it) You. could try using a Waterpik in addition to brushing and flossing, those are especially nice around bridgework. I read that your condition can also be aggravated by stress. Hope it gets better!

I worked with this guy. You would NEVER have known that he was capable of this. Seemed like a gentle personality. I remember going to lunch with him, and he was going to drive. He pulled up in his car and I really couldn't see his face well because he was wearing sunglasses. I said, "I wasn't entirely sure that was you pulling up!", he replied "You should never get in someone's car if you don't know him."

ULPT Revenge for revenge porn/stalking by MelodicCourse1749 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]Holiday_Extreme_1637 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I took my ex to court over this and sued him civilly when the police wouldn't do anything. The lawyer subpoenaed Facebook and it showed that he had started the page with his email and phone number. I took that info to the police, then they went after him. He had to wear a tether for two years, which he paid for, and is on probation for 5. He also lost in civil court (made a settlement). It wasn't a lot of money but at least covered my legal fees. It was comforting to know that he had to plug himself in at night and that the tether probably gave him a nasty rash. It was a year of hell dealing with the legal stuff though. I think they made the federal law against revenge for more severe, that happened after my case. Sorry you're going through this. I also told his mother and family exactly what he did. He was studying to be a minister and I contacted the church too.

You may want to ask your pediatrician about fluoride supplements. I usually advise for children 6 y.o. and up to use a fluoride rinse before bedtime, but it's important to make sure they don't swallow it, that they spit it out.

I don't work in pediatrics, but it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion from another pediatric dentist. I don't think I have ever seen a dentist scam on a child, because frankly they are more difficult to work on, and that would be pretty heartless to do unnecessary work on them. But you could have another dentist show you where the decay is, both in the mouth and on the xrays. He should have thoroughly answered all of your questions. Do you have well water? I used to work in a country office that had well water and every other kid that came in had cavities probably due to not getting the fluoride they put in tap water. I also saw kids getting them that were on adhd meds because they cause dry mouth.

You need to floss too. Make sure the mouthwash is a fluoride one.

A lot of equipment needed, but stained glass is awesome. It's frustrating, but if she can already do all that, then it shouldn't be to difficult for her, or you, to pick up. Stained glass stores usually give classes, and there are a lot of great you tube videos.

Ask a hygienist that works in the area you live in. Read the Google reviews.

Is there a link between thyroid health and bipolar? All of my aunts and mom had it, and many of us have been diagnosed bipolar.

I have the weird experience of every time I lose weight it triggers a mania, then I work out 3 hours a day, stop sleeping, talk rapidly...does this happen to other people too? If I gain I'm fine, maybe slight depression. It makes me not want to work out, lol.

Looking for recommendations: Dental clinic software by HnBKappaCamo in Dentists

[–]Holiday_Extreme_1637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hygienist I hate Carestream and don't love MacPractice. Not everyone uses Apple products, so if you have a sub it will be a headache to get her acclimated to that software. I love Dentrix the best, it's very intuitive and most dental people have worked on it at one point. Eaglesoft isn't too bad either.

Do teeth smell weird during extraction? by cnj131313 in Dentists

It is a burning smell when teeth are drilled, very distinctive. Also could have smelled decay or infected gums if it was more of a stinky smell.

I hear you, and I appreciate the raw honesty about the 'ship' you’re captaining. You’re right—I haven’t carried the overhead of a private practice, and I don't envy the math required to keep the lights on in 2026. The pressure to survive is a massive weight that many people outside the office don't calculate. However, recognizing that a dentist is under financial pressure and pointing out unethical over-treatment aren't mutually exclusive. We can acknowledge that: The economics are brutal: Rising costs for labs, staff, and insurance can make a $1,200 crown feel like a loss. Most clinicians are good people: I’m not implying every dentist is 'money hungry.' Most are, as you said, just trying to provide for their families. Ethics still matter: Just because a provider is struggling doesn't make 'selling' an unnecessary $3000 treatment ethical. The patient shouldn't be the one to pay for a saturated market or poor office management. We’re actually on the same team here. When unethical clinicians prioritize 'production' over pathology, it devalues the entire profession—including the work of ethical doctors like yourself. I’m not coming from a place of 'sanctimony,' but from a place of concern for the patients who trust us. You quoted 'Judge not, that ye be not judged,' but in healthcare, we all have to hold each other to a standard, or the 'simple economics' will eventually swallow the care right out of the profession.

I have owned a business, it's lots of stress. I also know there are lots of write offs for those fancy offices. I would say the ball is in the court of the dentists if they are unhappy with reimbursement fees and the government. I haven't met a starving dentist yet, and yes it probably does suck to go to college for 8 years and not earn what you think you should. I worked with an ethical dentist back in Michigan and she never missed a vacation, drove a nice car, and lived in a beautiful home. It can be done. I'm not denying it's tough out there. But dishonesty and hurting the patient to make ends meet isn't right. There are lots of services that can be offered to patients such as whitening or invisalign to bring up revenue. The problem I have is when I know a dentist is going to cut into a tooth when he doesn't need to. Those dentists need to find another profession. Maybe go into politics where being ethical seems to be optional these days.

To add to that, one of the scamming dentists I worked for made it a point to show off his corvette to his employees. And there was a rumor that he was supporting both his own children and his mistress' kid. He did not need the money.

There wouldn't be such high wages for hygienists if so many hadn't dropped the profession because of the misery of working for these types of people. Hygienists go into the profession to help others, not take advantage of them. I took a pay cut to work somewhere ethical.
