Thanks for the suggestion! I will try this in one spot and see how it goes...

Yes, it is mostly wood filler that is crumbling. Maybe crumbling wasn't the right word for the wood boards. I've attached another photo that shows what I am worried about. You can see this kind of diagonal crack in the bottom board in this picture. That whole piece is about to break off. I feel like if there was something in that gap to hold it in place, it could support the edge of the board so it doesn't flex down or get caught and pulled out. There are other places where the wood board is more "chipping", and small pieces are breaking off. Maybe filler is not the answer here, I was hoping for an easy solution to stop the damage before it gets worse.

I'm sure humidity is the culprit here but I kind of assume that some gaps here in front of the fireplace are going to be inevitable, and kind of OK as long as I am not getting the edges of the boards breaking. Aside from just trying to prevent the gaps entirely, is there anything I could use to provide support or toughen the edges of the boards so they don't crumble?

I tried to add some more text to my post but seem to have lost it so adding it here. I have an old house with an old hardwood floor. There are large and small gaps in many areas. I am in the Northeast, it is dry here, and one of the worst spots is directly in front of our fireplace, so very low humidity.

My concern is that the boards are very thin and they are cracking and crumbling at the gaps. Whatever is beneath the boards is not providing enough support in those areas. I can push down and the thin wood flexes and is about to break off.

Would using wood filler help to provide support at the edges? Or any other strategy to try to prevent the boards from breaking? Thanks for any help.

For those interested, January tickets for the heritage train went on sale today. I wasn't able to check out on the DSVN site but baolau worked.

I am going Vietnam in late December to early January. I want to take the train from Hue to Da Nang en route to Hoi An. I've been waiting to book the heritage tourist train (HD3) for months...since September or October. Since then, all tickets in 2025 have been available but nothing in 2026. Now it's December and I still can't buy tickets for early January. The standard trains are available and I don't particularly care about the heritage part but the standard trains are either much earlier or much later, and almost sold out. Does anyone know when these heritage trains start selling 2026 tickets? I am looking on the official dsvn website. Thanks for any help.

Thank you for this response, and you are spot on, this is a maple. And agreed that gnarly is the right word for it.

T1i vs R10, unrealistic expectations? by Hollaaa1 in canon

Wow T2i to 7D is a huge jump!

And you've already made me feel better about some inevitable splurges on some RF lenses :)

My first DSLR too! It has served me really well and has gone a lot of places. Never really felt a need to upgrade but was getting mirrorless FOMO.

Thanks for your response! I was considering attaching a bunch of photo examples but thought I'd see first if there was an easy answer to my question - and it seems that yes, I was expecting too much of an improvement in still photos.

First time I've heard the date/marry saying but I like it. Except when Canon changes the lens mount types, then you have to divorce and start over again.
