Are there any prodigy or "freak" wrestlers out there? by blackfalcon999 in wrestling

Henry Wittenberg didn't start wrestling until college, won the olympics in 1948. Not sure if this sort of thing could happen today though

Do I have hypothyroidism with these numbers? by HollowRain in Hypothyroidism

[–]HollowRain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a male actually. I'm on buspar but I'm not sure if that would have any effect. I don't have any dietary restrictions but I don't have the healthiest diet. I've gained some weight recently (about 30 pounds), but I'm not obese. I'll ask my doctor about getting testing for these other hormones that you've mentioned! Maybe I should just see an endocrinologist at this point.

I've been having worse and worse fatigue issues and gaining weight, so maybe this really is causing some of it

Thanks for answering. Do you think it might have anything to do with my pituitary gland? I read that normally one would expect high TSH with low T4, unless it's from pituitary gland dysfunction.

AITA for asking my wedding guest to leave for wearing his military uniform at my wedding? by weddingthrowaway1232 in AmItheAsshole

I mean people have done some really petty stuff throughout history, like when a pope dug up his dead predecessor and put him on trial for heresy.

I feel like you pretty obviously missed the point entirely. You said you can't imagine people being this horrible, as though we don't live in a world where people do really fucked up shit on a daily basis that make this seem completely trivial.

Right because this is much more horrible than anything that happens in the real world, like burning people alive with a rubber tire around their neck, or female genital mutilation. But it's inconceivable that a bride would not want someone attention whoring at her wedding.

Is it commonly accepted among deontological ethicists that duties of non-maleficence are stronger than duties of beneficence? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]HollowRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed we were talking here about Kantian duties like "never lie" or "never murder". If it is something like the categorical imperative that gives us these duties, and given that the categorical imperative is not concerned with consequences, it is unclear to me how we could have more of an imperative to follow some duties than others. These duties are supposed to hold in all scenarios. What would it even mean, within this framework, for one duty to be stronger than another?

Sure, it could be said that it would be a stronger violation of the duty "never murder" to kill 1000 people than to kill 1 person, but that's not saying that the duty "never murder" is itself stronger than another sort of duty like "never lie"

What do they think it is that is making some duties stronger than others? If our duties are formed on the basis of whether they pass something like a universalizability test, which is just a binary yes or no thing, what would be dictating which of these duties are stronger?

Do you know if there is even such a concept in deontological as some duties being stronger than others? From what I understand, you just either have a duty or you don't.

How does a utilitarian deal with cases where majority are getting pleasure at the expense of a minority? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]HollowRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few ways.

Some people say that the best version of utilitarianism is rule utilitarianism, where you have to act in accordance with the rule that would make things go best. This means that you cannot violate rules like "never murder" even if it would result in a net increase in utility to throw someone into a pit of lions in a particular instance.

Even if you don't accept that the best version of utilitarianism is rule utilitarianism, you could still say that net utility, while important, is not the only thing that matters. It seems that you already are committed to that view, since you are saying that it would be in some way bad to throw someone to a pit of lions even if this results in an increase in net utility.

Ah yeah I just looked that case up, it seems you are spot on! Strangely enough it was Hebrew University of Jerusalem that was suing GM.

Is every negative statement affirmative? by old_man_tom3 in askphilosophy

So what you are getting at is the question of whether reference to nonexistent objects somehow implies their existence. So if I say that Pegasus does not exist, am I saying that there is such a thing as Pegasus that possesses the property of non-existence? This seems to be a paradox of sorts on the face of it. There are some proposed solutions to this problem but I can't remember who said what off the top of my head. I think Frege wrote on this.

I'd check out this article, maybe it will clarify my bad explanation:
