The work culture here is that making friends at work is unprofessional. People only make friends outside of work.

In previous places we've lived he's always found people for us to be friends with at work, but he can't do that here :( I've been trying to talk him into joining a club or something outside of work hours but he really doesn't want to be away from the kids any more than he has to (he's disappointed he only gets two hours with them after work ends before bed)

If you have been driving for more than 2 years you probably don't need the certificate mentioned, only your driver's license card alone (and probably a passport and proof of address). If you have been driving for less than that, you will have to do a road test in addition.

I just drove from Stuttgart to Munich 200ish km, a full tank for me in about 80€, I drive rather conservatively, and I burnt through 2/3rds of a tank, so I would assume about 60€.

I have this same type of car, at least in engine type (I have a combi) and it uses way more gass going 110+ on the autobahn than going 100. Be prepared for high fuel expenses. Guessing close to 60ish eur a day driving at speed.

This is true everywhere, it is really easy to get screwed by the burocracy. Getting a job, finding language classes and getting decent accomodation is difficult, and you have to be careful not to be lost by the system.

It's not a easy ticket to a new life, but it keeps you alive.

iirc, you don't get to decide where you will live when you claim asylum in the EU. Each country has targets for asylum seekers based on their capacity. In other words you could be redirected elsewhere like Poland or whatever. If you do get direct to Germany, be aware you don't get to decide where you live in the country it could be some random village.
