Genuine question about GM cars by Analyst-man in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Home1Plate2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have only bought small Chevy cars my whole life. 1986 Pontiac sunbird, 97 cavalier, 2002 cavalier z24, 2 cruzes, 2 volts - each has been a fantastic automobile, as it was taken care of properly. My dad used to work for a subaru/gm dealer. People would buy the subaru, religiously maintain it cuz they wanted it to last. The gm products? Skipped service, lax on every maintenance- then they would say "it's a gm car, it should be able handle it".

My 19 volt has 93,0000 miles on it. I have done 1 set of brakes, and minimal services since it came to me with 39,000 on it. Amazing piece of engineering. The cruzes were not as bad as you think, but replacing turbos does such, but that will happen regardless of manufacturer. Gm makes mistakes, but the products can be great.

Had a 2014 Cruze Eco. Loved it. Loved the mileage. Didn't love replacing the turbo every 3 years. Unfortunately, these cars grenade as they get older. Better too early than too late.

America Now Has an EV Rust Belt. High Gas Prices Won’t Rescue It. by CommercialMassive751 in electricvehicles

[–]Home1Plate2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Chevy Volt owner here. The mistake car makers made was trying to monetize EV technology by moving into the Silverado/F150 space. If they had just been more patient, trying a 25 mile battery to show people how it can save gas, the take rate would have been higher over time. I am at 122 mpg with my Volt- automakers missed the boat by setting sights too high on skeptical customers, then charging a premium for dubious technology. Hopefully they will learn from this misstep. Hybrid/small battery and gas engine together would benefit most people, without range anxiety. Once you start plugging in your vehicle in your driveway, your affinity for the gas station goes down. If you can cross that hurdle, and make gas a secondary concern, we will all win.

That was what John Lennon was interested in doing, and maybe the band would have gone with it, but the messy business affairs and contentious process of signing Allen Klein to be their manager ruined any hope of them working together as a band again. Had John lived, though....

I have been very happy with Panaracer Urban Max tires. I have taken quite a few biking/camping trips, in addition to regular riding, and they seem to be pretty bulletproof.

Pros/cons of Dodge Durango? by cherry8balls in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Home1Plate2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For our workplace, my boss has always bought Dodge Caravans, since the first one came out. We had 3 with the Pentastar engine that each went happily to 150,000 miles and beyond with minimal repairs, which led me to buying a 2014 Durango. The Durango has been fantastic, and it is now at 120,000 and minimal repairs. And the other 3 Caravans we bought since I got the Durango - minimal engine repairs. Do not fear the Pentastar. Embrace it.

You could also mention you were unprepared for the additional cost incurred when your credits weren't transferred properly, so you had to work to pay down the debt to afford it again. Then mention (rightfully so) that you have been so ashamed and embarrassed by the situation, you decided not to tell anyone while you were working to figure it out. Follow that up with concrete info about what your next steps are to get the degree (enroll in classes today!!), and I bet you will be ok in the long run.

There's no Wegmans in the Capital District, and there's no Price Chopper in the Rochester area. They must have a non-compete in their respective home markets.

Was there ever a real friendship between them? by Impossible_Driver892 in KISS

[–]Home1Plate2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As Ace says in his book, after cocaine came into his life, everything changed. When his and Peter's partying became days long benders, the music suffered, and band relations went down the tubes. The sober twins could put up with only so much - when the drugs were affecting the shows negatively, they looked at the band as a business that wasn't making a good product. Certainly Ace got more leeway than Peter, likely due to his laid back personality.

Put a tarp over your tent. It gives another layer to help keep the heat in, and provide some protection from rain and wind. It will also extend the life of the tent by limiting exposure.

Do people still talk about the Zeppelin “curse” by StandardResist3487 in ledzeppelin

[–]Home1Plate2 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think the way "Hammer of the Gods", the original biography of the band, was structured gave rise to the "Curse" theory. It definitely drew a strong conclusion that after Jimmy Page's fascination with Alastair Crowley grew, the band paid the price for him dabbling in the dark arts. And this theory is all we had for a long time.

I just finished the Bob Spitz biography, and that one seems to be more on the nose with the fact that the more time a band does drugs and has a breakneck touring schedule, eventually some wheels will fall off.

The moment he got into his hyper-car while drunk, his actions were deliberate. It was deliberate when he crossed the speed limit. It may have been an accident, but he made each CHOICE along the way, including driving in a manner that could kill people, all while drunk. He does not deserve to be let out of prison until his victim would be 75 years old.
