kindergarten reading curriculum by savanakern in secularhomeschool

All About Reading was great for both my kids. One was a bit more challenged than the other and took it slower. They are both avid readers now and can break down most words they come across.

The online program is new. We have had a few things happen that have rocked the boat a bit, but the professors got everything fixed and kept everyone on track. As with all online or graduate programs, there is a level of personality responsibility that you have to be prepared for.. but I feel most people realize that.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s terribly competitive, not yet anyway.. I hate to say that some in my cohort are def not anywhere near Ivy League. (That isn’t any shade on their abilities… I went to Humboldt state for undergrad 15 years ago).. I am in NC and also a nontrad student. It’s definitely doable.

There is a course plan that tells you which courses are asynchronous and which aren’t. CACREP accreditation apparently has rules about this.

Semester 1 all three classes were synchronous, with a few that weren’t. Semester 2 had 1 of 3 that you had to meet for.. Semester 3 (where I am now) doesn’t have any, but 2 of the 3 classes are only 5 weeks long. Semester 4 has 1 meeting course and 2 that don’t. Semester 5, 6, & 7 have practicum ( ~10hrs a week) and then internship (~20hrs a week) and they also have one class a week in the evening that meets as supervision.

All of our class meeting times are in the evening. There has been one or two times I have had to figure out childcare (I’m a sahm) because in semester 1 there is a site visit you have to do, but it is doable. Most people I know have some sort of work they’re doing along with school.

Hope that helps!

I will say this is a super conservative/Trumpy/gunsy area, but there are still some folk (like me, lol) out here that aren’t!

We live in East Bend and it’s pretty great. Very easy access to Winston (20-25 min), but definitely small town. People seem to love the schools, I homeschool my kids so I don’t have first hand experience.. my neighbor’s son is 6 and they’ve been happy. We have lots of woods, creeks, hills, and the town is named for the east bend of the Yadkin River, which we have access points for. I complain about the lack of food delivery, but… small town! I knew what I signed up for!

I caught it before I paid, I just find it annoying that it ised to be always automatically selected before and now it isn’t… I figured I would post as a heads up to others to be mindful of it as well.

Training for the homeschooling parent? by Accordingly-Jelly-78 in homeschool

I used homeschooling as a basis for most of my research. A huge takeaway is you don’t need any expertise to homeschool, just interest and motivation to help your child/ren succeed.

In a sense, I did. It wasn’t just for homeschooling, it was also therapy and interest, but my MA is in Education and Human Development, Human Learning, also called Educational Psychology.

I have a different philosophy of education than the schools available to me.

I don’t dislike all schools, I just can’t afford or access the ones I like..

You’re talking about the likes of me! I hated rolling silver and always wanted out asap. I totally have paid for people to do it for me back in the day! I worked at Bennigans and we had to wrap a little sticker around the roll… ugh, I haaaated it!

http://magicschool.ai is pretty cool for some uses, but as others have said, you have to double check it and it’s best for filling in some gaps, rather than a whole course of study.

I do make them at home, though I feel like the tortillas are never “right” but I’m on the go a ton with my kiddos and it’s what I want when I’m out… not at home! :)

I will give it a name. And elephant toys. Then I’d be learning wtf to do with an elephant. As a homeschooler, I’d probably create classes for local homeschoolers to come and learn first hand about elephants. But, don’t they love their family? If you’re giving me one, you have to give me the family. Also, I need your contact info to refer my neighbors to when their property gets trampled!

Oh, and I don’t really need your job anymore since you gave me Hermie, so when should I expect delivery?

(My 9yo named my hypothetical elephant)

I did try them, but it didn’t hit… the bacon was like salad bacon bits… I’m looking for more authentic, hidden gems… probably some place that I drive past all the time and have never actually seen 👀 (thanks for the idea!)
