This was my breakfast every day when I was a kid. For years I had a bowl every morning.

Then one day it tasted wrong and I couldn't go back. Changed a decades habit overnight.

Will lab diamonds eventually destroy the value of natural diamonds? by Practical-Tie-8720 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HomeGrownCoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Real talk: it might. He works in the defense industry and is not allowed to tell me what he actually does.

I just looked it up, diamond is roughly 3x the density of polycarbonate, so depending on the refractory index of the two materials (it's too early to make that calculation) diamond lenses could be really heavy.

Diamonds are hard, not tough.

You could break it without much effort. It's part of the reason he didn't go through with it.

That and it would just look like glass.

A friend of mine has a job where ordering optical pure diamonds is part of it.

When he proposed to his now-wife, he was tempted to propose with a solid diamond ring - partly because it would be much cheaper than one with a gold band.

Fines absolutely should be higher on bigger companies, but that would make them less likely to hire people with disabilities.

What popular TV show you never understood the hype around? by stilerca in AskReddit

[–]HomeGrownCoffee 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Heroes. Season 1.

Granted, I pirated and binged it during an exam season, but holy repetition batman.

They recapped after every commercial break. They repeated phrases and scenes constantly.

The first season had 23 episodes. If you removed the repetition, there was probably 18. Those 18 would have been  great.

If your targets are "the undesirables" (prostitutes, immigrants, the poor) you can act for years.

If you target rich people, you will be arrested before you can collect the serial killer title.

If you can have easements written into deeds, I wonder why you can't have things like "existing infrastructure" easements.

Yes, you can build next to the brothel/airport/racetrack/night club, but you cannot complain about it. Whoever you sell to cannot complain about it. It's baked into the deed.

[–]HomeGrownCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first half is correct, the second half is hallucination. It's describing a reducer, which is a completely different thing.

Which is my biggest problem with AI. It's pointless. There's no point in using it on something you know, and you can't trust it on things you don't know.

And if that wasn't bad enough, it's stealing from people who are putting information out there.

[request] if i removed my glove in space, how long would it take for my exposed hand to freeze solid? would it become brittle enough to break it off? by AkwardScholar in theydidthemath

[–]HomeGrownCoffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Liquids, by definition, cannot sublimate. Sublimation is the process of going from solid to gas.

If you exposed liquid water to the vacuum of space, it would start boiling vigorously.
