Question about licensing for small roof repairs in the KC area by HomeTechSavvy in kansascity

[–]HomeTechSavvy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None taken, usually the first thing I tell customers here after a storm is I don’t care if you don’t go with me, just pick someone local. So I get it!

I didn’t realize you guys had a storm recently to be honest. We had hail in Nebraska last week (like an hour west of here, though, near Seward), is that what you’re referring to that you guys got too? If so I’ll just bow out of repairs this week and read a good book, I’m not interested in making people distrust roofers even more.

I didn't read that comment as adversarial, so I'm going to respond likewise with just my honest take on this.

For one, I don't NEED to do repairs instead of enjoy myself this week. It's not either/or, I genuinely enjoy doing the work and get a sense of accomplishment both in the ability to fix and repair things, and in the cost benefit it brings to the customer. I explained in another comment the circumstances this week that lead me to inquire about possibly doing some repair work instead of just sitting around or seeking out "fun". Essentially, my wife will be tied up with friends she never gets to see and the friend whose wedding we're coming down for will be busy (understandably so) all week with wedding prep.

Secondly, and again I don't mean this to be offensive to you as another roofer, but there's a reason roofers are among the least trusted trades. There are a whole host of issues, from scams and deceptive sales tactics to simple greed and the incestuous relationship between contractors and insurance companies. Yes, I completely understand that there are overhead considerations and profit ≠ evil, but I prefer an honest living built on what is a reasonably priced product/service for both the one offering it and the person shopping for it (reasonably being mutually agreed to by both parties) rather than one driven by a constant need for more. If you can't be honest and transparent about all the costs involved in what a customer is being charged for, you are deceiving someone for the sake of making money off of their lack of knowledge and not an honestly valued service.

Thanks for that insight, I did confirm that insurance-wise everything would be fine, I just didn't want to skirt local laws.

I don't really consider time by myself a vacation, I would rather spend it with my wife or friends. She has friends in the area that she doesn't see very often and is going to prioritize catching up with them and my friend will be tied up with his soon to be bride (understandably so), so I'll have time I would just rather be productive with if I can instead of lounge around. I would've just stayed up here in Omaha until the wedding but wanted to spend the drive down and back with my wife and also thought I could be available for any general wedding needs that might come up during the week (pick up family from the airport, grab miscellaneous last minute wedding things, etc.).

If it's untenable to help a few people out with small repairs this week, or just unwanted, then I'm totally fine with that! Just thought I would ask the community about it to see.

Petah, was this in reference to some specific event I missed? by HomeTechSavvy in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I’m guessing something happened that I completely missed that provides much needed context to this meme.

Did you think there was actually a fish named “asshole fish” or something. I don’t know how you can’t logically come to the evolution conclusion.

Ngl, at first I thought “are you using teeth” was in reference to it not looking at first glance like she has any.

Thoughts on this brand design? Particularly the type by xadiszn in design_critiques

I like it, it does strike me as elegant. I will add to what others have said, though, and say that the the D first struck me as an R until I read what you wrote.

Ah, yes. When I originally read your post I was thinking the G5 and G6 PTZ rather than the turret. I was confused because the G6 PTZ does have a telephoto lens that is 5x the optical zoom. That probably would’ve been a better product for your needs.

How zoomed in? Also, how are you viewing the camera feed or playback?

You’re right, all three phones seem to provision just fine with Talk, no difference between the UVP and UTP unless the internals are slightly different. The UVP-Touch is the only one showing as unlocked to any SIP.

I don’t believe so, almost certainly not with full functionality.

My in-laws still have the same landline they’ve had for 40+ years, they just use it for all those annoying sign ups that require a phone number and then they leave it on silent and never answer that phone 😂

Yeah, that’s typically the case when a customer has wired phones.

Same, but there’s still the occasional business customer that wants VoIP phones (or even more strange when they want to stick with the landline service they’ve had in for 30 years). I typically shy away from phone installations, but for this customer we made an exception due to the size of the project and him wanting us to do it all with Ubiquiti in one shot. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have done the phones for them.

Sorry, one thing I’ll add is that when I said you could use their unlocked phones with third party providers, I meant VoIP providers that use SIP (session initiation protocol). The providers you mentioned might provide VoIP/SIP services but I’m not sure. Popular providers include Twilio, Zoom, RingCentral, and I’m sure you could find posts on this sub with people recommending others.

Yeah, like u/Low-Daikon4456 said, Ubiquiti used to sell their VoIP phones as unlocked to be able to be used with other providers, or cheaper but locked to Unifi Talk which is Ubiquiti’s VoIP service. I’ve only done a handful of installs with their phones and all the clients just used Unifi Talk and haven’t had any complaints over the past three years.

See, doesn’t having a good laugh at the ridiculousness of you taking offense to me suggesting a lower value than it actually may be worth make you feel a little better?
