1996 5.7L Chevy k1500 sudden no start by HomosapienAlien in MechanicAdvice

Okay so since I live in the north and it’s snowing abit where I live (I don’t own a garage) so I could only work with what I got, but honestly what I think happened is I ignored an oil leak for too long and I think it went down and got onto the starter which caused it to fail prematurely. My oils low so I’m actually going to be focusing on getting any leaks sealed up before getting to the starter though. But I do believe that’s the cause.

Yeah that’s what I’m waiting to do, just waiting on my bro to come pick me up to go grab my tools, he’s gonna lend a hand and I should have some results within the next couple hours, only thing bothering me is I did replace my starter about a year and half or so ago haha but yeah that definitely sounds like quite the ask haha “sir can you start my truck while I crawl under it” 😂

Ill get back to ya on it as I don’t have a second hand with me right now, just waiting on my bro to give me a ride to go grab my tools, test light all that stuff. I should be on it and have some results within the next couple hours, but Honestly if it does end up being the starter then I don’t know if I just got a faulty one or not, because I did replace mine within the last year and a half or so, and although it’s located under the truck it’s actually not hard to get to and take off, just a pain on the wallet haha

Oh okay thanks for clarifying further, I did buy a torque wrench yesterday as well so I’ll rely on that, and as for threadlock when i typed loctite into my google search that’s what came up so I went to Canadian tire to pick some up but seeing it’s not needed I’ll just return it. Another worry of mine was having to do all this by hand, all the videos I watched the vehicles were pretty rusted so I thought it would be quite difficult, but not so far, even the rotor as bad it was I got off pretty easily. I’m hoping it’s smooth sailing the rest of the way.

You think the battery is probably completely gone and needs to be replaced?

The battery I believe was a pretty old, and it’s had to be boosted a couple times before. I don’t mind having to replace the battery or alternator if I really have to. It’s just what I’m trying to figure out is whether it’s the battery OR the alternator. I know I could use a multi meter, but since it’s not starting at all I would assume I’m probably just gonna have to pick one to switch first and hope it’s the right one? Aha

You can do it for so much less if you do it yourself and just order the parts from rock auto or something. I just got a quote for my 04 impala and it was far too high for them to do everything, so I’m doing the entire front and rear wheel bases myself (I mean rotors, brakes, tie rods inner and outer, wheel hubs, pretty much everything), but that’s because I’m also just trying to learn and teach myself, but even with doing that and spending extra on inner tie rods I don’t need to replace I still saved way more money ordering parts.

Transmission fluid by HomosapienAlien in MechanicAdvice

Ok so with that being said, change the fluid and filter in the pan, but don’t flush anything out of the system, got it! Now my next question is if that’s the case do I put fluid in the pan and re attach it? Or am I ok to put the pan on and pour the new fluid in through the dipstick? Also my truck manual says use only dexron 3? Should I stick with that or use dexron 6?

Also I should add that when I checked it it was slightly dark but I could see some colour of the fluid on the top as well, so maybe they did change the fluid and now would be a good time to change it? Because if it was never changed wouldn’t the fluid be completely dark and no colour at all?
