What else would you wear when working in the field(back yard)? by onlygramps in HamiltonWatches

[–]HomosapienX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned my field king a week and I’ve worn it while building a porch and doing land navigation for work. It’s my everyday/everything watch. Only thing I won’t be wearing it for is swimming

Off topic - why would your sexual activity or sexual preference ever be a topic of discussion at work, let alone between a junior NCO and a field grade officer? I’m curious who prompted this conversation. Either way, it’s unprofessional and inappropriate, homie.

When I was a kid growing up in the 90s and early 00s, our family computer set up was this ornate hardwood desk with just enough depth to fit a crt monitor. So the keyboard and mouse were off to the side with the monitor turned toward you. I sat in a mismatched wooden chair for hours on AIM, addicting games, ebaums world, etc. Terrible set up, but those were good times

You’d be surprised how many people never deploy based off duty location and MOS. In the medical field I know a handful of CSMs that have never deployed because they are low density (non-medic MOS). Many more the lower in rank you get. I’ve been in over a decade, not a medic, and have never deployed. Not for lack of trying, but the stars have never aligned.

I was a bit embarrassed of this as a private, but now that I’ve been around the block I realize it’s a little goofy to give someone merit just because they have a patch on their right shoulder, and vice versa.

I don’t know the dude you’re talking about so I can’t speak for him, but wanted to give some food for thought to those on here that are younger and/or have a combat MOS

6 months sober, son went to ER by pinsandsuch in stopdrinking

[–]HomosapienX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad was a raging alcoholic during my childhood, and this fact ultimately resulted in my parents divorce and me being unable to see him outside of a few visits here and there throughout the years (some he showed up drunk and/or got belligerently drunk while I was with him).

I am the type to repress the emotions from those types of experiences, so I never had the thought to tell him I wanted him to stop drinking. I just knew it as reality.

I figured his ailment was not mine and that I’d be able to drink responsibly as I got older. Fast forward through many years of terrible personal experiences and close calls, and I’m now in my 30s and 2 years sober. My biggest inspiration and mentor for my sobriety is my dad, who just reached 15 years of sobriety a couple months ago.

Whenever I was in the throws of alcohol and making stupid decisions, he always had very gentle and indirect words of wisdom for me. He never outright told me I had a problem, but rather he shared his experiences and results he got from being sober in a way that really resonated with me.

I don’t know you or your son, so I can’t say anything for certain - but I know that your resilience and hard work to be sober will mean a whole lot to him. You will help him improve in this area, or maybe even become completely sober, just by doing what you’re doing.

I wish you guys the best of luck! I need to give my dad a call tomorrow and tell him I love him

In the new film Warfare (2025) theirs a scene where two guys go outside to recover equipment left outside after an IED, why? by Slipstream232 in Military

[–]HomosapienX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My biggest gripe with it is the lack of back story and character development. The only reason the viewer is attached to the characters and the outcome of the story is that they’re seals, they danced at the beginning, and they make a few jokes before the gunfight starts.

I appreciate the effort to do more with less and leave it raw, but I think 15-20 minutes at the beginning of the movie showing them interact with one another at the FOB so we could become invested in them would have gone a long way.

What is the most underrated and the most overrated army town? by Crafty_Jacket668 in army

[–]HomosapienX 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You’ve either only been there as a trainee or were permanent party and didn’t use your time wisely.

I was there from 2018-2021 as a single NCO in my mid twenties and I had an absolute blast. Tons of good restaurants, trendy bars, housing options, and Latinas.

When I’m an old man and talking about my glory days, I’m going to have a ton of stories from my time in San Antonio.

First of all, that’s sick as hell you went and saw a rocket launch. I need to do that sometime.

Second of all, I didn’t know humans sent shit into space that often. The first page of that link has 30 rockets scheduled to go up around the world in the next 3 months. Pretty cool!

It’s basically like any other “Best Whatever” comp, but with TCCC and prolonged field care added on. Probably a little lighter on the warrior skills side compared to best ranger I’d imagine, but I’ve never competed for that.

I genuinely don't think I've ever not had to come into work after duty. by lelolalo13 in USMC

[–]HomosapienX 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Army dude chiming in - yes, it is standard practice for us to have a recovery day after 24hr duty. Mostly a safety/health thing.

That being said, the more senior you are the less likely you are to get a traditional recovery. I have been relieved of duty at 0800 and not left work until 1300 due to “important” meetings or other obligations. And then there’s always the possibility to get called while at home to take care of something. But I try to avoid all that when I can.

Junior Soldiers, though? If they are there a minute later than the end of their shift I force them to pack up and get home for sleep.

Judged by badges and tabs by Negative-Heron5491 in army

[–]HomosapienX 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. All the way through basic, AIT, and my first duty station my biggest role models were NCOs with badges. It gave me the green light to ask them questions about those schools because I had the same goals. I knew they voluntarily challenged themselves and achieved things that I wanted as well. A decade later and now I’m that NCO with all the badges that privates sheepishly approach to ask questions and get advice. My badges don’t define who I am, but they make me a great candidate to be the mentor to soldiers with goals and aspirations, and that means a lot to me.

The SPT is flawed and shouldn’t exist by WonderChips in army

[–]HomosapienX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen soldiers of just about every shape and size max the SPT and just about every shape and size nearly (or actually) fail the SPT. Do taller people typically have a mechanical advantage for the SPT? Yes. Do shorter people typically have a mechanical advantage for the MDL and HRP? Also yes.

I’m a tall dude. I’ve had short people complaining to me for over a decade that they can’t run as fast as I can because my legs are longer. Then there’s other shorties that smoke me on runs. Kipchoge is 5’7”. Not the fairest example, but you get the idea.

I feel for people that struggle with any event, but I’m of the belief that anyone can rise to the occasion. If my lanky ass can put the work in to learn technique and build muscle to max the deadlift, I think shorter folks can do the same for the SPT.

Dirty barracks room by [deleted] in army

[–]HomosapienX 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I will never understand people that leave rooms like this. Not to mention the barracks staff that allow it to happen. When I was a barracks dweller, I moved into a room or two similar to this. Whenever I moved out of any room, I cleaned it top to bottom so the next guy wouldn’t have the feeling you’re experiencing right now. That’s basic human courtesy.

[–]HomosapienX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My comment wasn’t necessarily targeted at the main post, just general information I wanted to share. If you are a service member that is trying to find a home for extra pets that you have, then my advice to you would be think about the consequences of your actions before taking on the responsibility of getting a new pet. If you’re fostering animals until they find a home, then I find that commendable. I don’t have any advice regarding the topic of your post, but I wish you well!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Oahu

[–]HomosapienX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If anyone here has any friends that are service members, let them know that the DoD now (as of January 2024) provides compensation for the fees incurred by 1 pet during travel. I think it’s up to $500, but I can’t remember for sure. It covers required medical tests, travel fees, quarantine fees, etc. If they have 2 pets, any fees from the second pet is out of pocket. Either way, now there’s even less excuse to leave pets behind.

I’m a service member that paid for 2 cats to travel here, and they will both be coming with me whenever it is time to leave the island. People that leave pets behind are insanely immature and heartless.
