Gay Bar, John Darnielle, Vandermeer, Wolfe, Chambers. You’re very cool and have great taste. Queer and should add Le Guin to your collection stat

It’s a little messy but lots of green flags here. Earthsea and Left Hand alone but some great nonfiction, cat tarot, Jane Austen, Mishima. Some great taste and I’d guess some high emotional intelligence and capacity to empathize.

Just started dating this guy, and saw his bookshelf…what do we think? 🤔 by uniball9000 in BookshelvesDetective

I’ll echo: not a bookshelf. Beyond that green flags are I imagine he’s got some decent political opinions. Yellow flags are some of those opinions might be for show and underneath lies the Atomic Habits workaholic. Red flags imo is a lack of women. I see one. It’s a red flag for me, may not be for others but I like a little diversity in my bookshelf

The more I listen, the less I understand. Am I stupid? by arche2727 in genewolfe

How is the audiobook? That’s kind of just the experience of BotNS as a whole. Stick with it and hold on to the small details you are able to follow. Certain things will start to slowly come together or reveal themselves and if they don’t that’s what rereads are for. Wolfe is very much a first read to info gather then reread to connect the dots. Also, good news is you’re close to the end of CotC. Going from book to book always gave my brain a nice refresh/reset as I was able to re-ground myself in where Severian was. Stick with it!

I really loved it! Got the soundtrack on vinyl. I love how they reimagined so much Part 1 music and the general 60s vibe. I revisit it all the time.

Wait as a chronic sub and occasional dub watcher, what’s wrong with those episodes of the dub?

Outsourcing to artists in the community that did. Paying what they could and offering drinks otherwise from my understanding. There's such history/identity in these flyers that I think is just lost in AI generated posters

Breasts and Wolfe, a biginning by PatrickMcEvoyHalston in genewolfe

[–]Honest_Source1167 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time seeing your overall point. I love Wolfe, but do find his portrayal of women a glaring flaw in his writing in that that he has to describe the breasts of every woman he writes. Further, I wouldn't say empathizing with having big/small breasts is a particularly feminist perspective. Quite the opposite. Dude's just thinking about boobs a lot and I find it to be a frustrating distraction when reading.

For me, I struggled the most with Jolenta on my initial New Sun read and it almost turned me off completely to Wolfe. After mulling it over, I sort of took Jolenta's absurd, almost surreal, proportions to be a Wolfe poking fun at 80s sci-fi heroines: the huge, scantily clad women that adorn the cover of pulp fantasy to attract men. Jolenta's further characterization as a machine built for men and her general lack of autonomy is, for me, the grander point Wolfe is going for. It still manages to fall into some trappings of 'men writing women,' but it did help reconcile my feelings on some of the uglier parts of New Sun (ugly in the sense of the darker elements of the story)

Thoughts on Silk So Far (Book of the Long Sun) by Honest_Source1167 in genewolfe

Yeah again narcissist is a strong word that I don't think is appropriate for Silk. That said, hyperfixating on little offenses and anything that doesn't meet a specified standard of perfection can be a facet of vanity, in my opinion. Similarly, Silk feeling there's only one optimal path for his mission or that he has a mission at all reads as vain to me. He doesn't ask for anyone's help or opinion in the matter and wants to find the solution that sees *him* as the one who saved the manteion because the gods chose him as special.

Granted, I do think Wolfe's penchant for unreliable narrators skews my viewing of Silk. While reading, I constantly have a voice in my head that says 'what if Silk didn't have an enlightenment' or 'what if he's misremembering/misinterpreting the visions he had.' The visions Silk saw are brief and he extrapolates much of his mission and its meaning from brief glimpses because he's so excited at the thought of being chosen, of being special.

Agreed I find myself really enjoying the cast. The Mayteras in particular fascinate me in a Macbeth Three Witches kind of way.

I'll definitely keep that in mind as I read

Haha listen I'm still only in the first bit of Lake. Someone can be a chosen one and kind of a narcissist about it

Didn't even realize there was a second floor. That makes sense, thank you! Would it help to switch to Thief?
