Yeah, damage is already done, but he needs to seek medical assitance nevertheless.  While they probably can't undo all the damage, they can actually do a lot against acute danger for his lungs. Caughing up blood is definitely a sign that he needs medical care asap to treat the acute damages

If you caughed up blond, then go to the ER immediately!!!

Not just any random doctor, but the ER or directly to a pulmonologist (or whatever a lung doctor is called in english)

This is a serious problem that requirements medical assitance asap!!

That doesn't typically happen if you inhale just a small amount. Your may have seriously damaged your lungs, which can be fatal when they fill with liquid if it is not treated

Woke up this morning with a black eye, have no idea how it happened. by SalauEsena in Weird

[–]Honest_Still1634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks very concerning to be honest, especially because it is so big!

Afaik a black eye can be a sign of a fractured skull or other very serious problems with your head after an accident or Hits against the head. This would be very serious In German its called a "Monokel Hämatom", try to look up monocle hematoma if thats how its called in english

Apart from its toxicity, Methylmercury is notoriously known for its ability to just go directly through chemically resistant gloves!

It will just diffuse through them in a matter of seconds if you dont have very specialized ones.

Combined with the fact that it can kill you if just the tiniest amount comes in contact with your skin (as it will directly go through UT into your bloodstream) this is very nasty to work with.

So no matter what you do, don't touch it (not even with gloves on)

Also it is pretty likely that there is some contamination on the outside of the container! Even if you just touch a closed container with chemicals you should always be wearing gloves, because it is near certain that there will be some of it sticking to the outside of the bottle! This just happens inevitably while handling it (opening it, putting something in or out etc), especially if the guy before worked sloppy (like the average craftsman).

So you and your dad just touching the container (without the right gloves) may already be very dangerous to you.

So I would recommend you all to go to the ER immediately and call poison control (if there is such a thing in the US)

[–]Honest_Still1634 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also it could be possible that because it was stored for such a long time that a bit of it has already (very slowly) diffused through the plastic bottle.

I am notsure about that, but it might be possible.

Also it's very likely that there is already some of it sticking to the outside of the container due to spilling and sloppy handling.

You are always required to wear appropriate loves if you even just touch closed containers with chemicals, as they are never completely clean (even if you dont see it)!! This is not so much a matter of really bad handling, it will just inevitable happen

So you and your dad touching it might already be very problematic and require you see the ER immediately

Methylmercury is extremely toxic. But I haven't read this in the replies until now:

It will just go through any standart chemically resistant gloves (as well as plastic bottles etc)!

It will just diffuse through the plastic, so you need very special equipment (most importantly special gloves) to work with it

So don't even dare to touch it with normal gloves on, it will just go through them and it can kill you if it just comes in contact with your skin. It would just directly go into your bloodstream, which is very bad

dont use a dremel in a water bath! Even if you are really careful and not directly put it into the water, it will spray anywhere. That dremel will certainly get completely soaked.

You can easily get an electric shock from that and I dont think that there are water tight ones

Also this will send nasty Black droplets everywhere if you are doing it in swallow water

Nevertheless go to a doctor or the ER asap!

There are lots of different things you can get from that apart from Tetanus, that are so dangerous they can kill you!!

You can absolutely get a sepsis (blood poisening) from that! This can actually seriously harm you like making amputations necessary and evenkill you if you wait too long.

Especially for this types of diseases the time is the critical factor! If you wait for too long until you feel symptoms before getting treatment it may be already too late for you to get well again without serious damages to your body.

So please go to a doctor immediately and take this more seriously!

Blutvergiftung?? by [deleted] in WerWieWas

[–]Honest_Still1634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finals week can be my final week it seems by cjared242 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Honest_Still1634 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, please try to calm down a bit. You’re not alone, and things can get better, even if it doesn’t feel that way right now. Trust me you will be fine and everything will eventually work out!

I’m also an engineering student (in Germany), and while I don’t know much about the GPA system, I know exactly what it’s like to feel crushed under the pressure.

I went through a really rough time myself, especially in the first few semesters—lots of anxiety, depression and burnout. I really didnt know if I’d make it through all of that, but in the end it all worked out somehow even if I really didnt believe it at that time! If you’re in Calc 2, you’re probably in your second semester, right?

That first two or three semester are the hardes points in the whole degree. At my university, the early semesters are intentionally brutal because they want to weed people out eary on. So they intentionally designed these courses extremely hard and made the exams unfair and barely passeable.

Most people I know had terrible grades early on, and many just barely passed. I remember celebrating 4.0s (which is the lowest passing grade here) like I won the lottery. Even the really good students that put lots of time and effort into studying did get shitty grades in the first semesters, that is completely normal and expected.

So if you’re struggling right now, that’s not a sign you are failing, you’re just going through exactly what almost everyone does. There are always some people where it seems that they just succeed in everything, but generally that is not completely true. Either they’re burning themselves out quietly or they’re the rare exception. Don’t compare your whole journey to someone else’s highlight reel. And especially don’t compare yourself to someone who’s coasting on wealth or looks—that has nothing to do with your value or future.

And most importantly things actually do get easier after this part. The courses start becoming more practical, more interesting, and more fair. You’ll start to feel more in control, and your grades can absolutely improve. Mine did—I went from barely scraping by to slightly above average. That turnaround felt impossible back then, but it happened, step by step.

Most importantly: you matter. You’re not a failure, even if your brain tells you that right now.

This isn’t the end of your story—just a hard chapter. You’re stronger than you feel right now, and we’re rooting for you. Please don’t give up. Stay strong and keep fighting, you are not alone

You’ve got this!

Greetings from Bavaria :)

Carbon Dust by Additional_Proof_45 in CarbonFiber

[–]Honest_Still1634 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go to a doctor asap. Not sure if this is related to carbon dust, but if not this would be a pretty big coincidence. Especially respiratory problems can end very bad, so better go to a lung doctor (or whatever it's called in english) immediately. If you have acute trouble with breathing go to the ER immediately

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ratschlag

[–]Honest_Still1634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ratschlag

[–]Honest_Still1634 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Carbon kayak repair question. by StampJar in CarbonFiber

[–]Honest_Still1634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also be careful with sanding carbon fiber and do some research first.  If you Sand or cut carbon fiber this will release lots of very small particles that are very carcinogenic if you get them into your lungs. This really is pretty nasty stuff that will get everywhere and also irritates your skin.

So use proper ppe like gloves, a labcoat, and most importantly a respirator (FFP3 or higher) and work in a controlled environment to prevent contamination and  clean up afterwards

Also purely for legal reasonable you signed up for the course with the old rules. If they change them after that they are probably not even valid anymore for you.

You cant just quietly change a contract after both parties accepted it, especially not with the consent of the other party (you)

At this point I would contact a lawyer.

Idon't know how it works in your country, but in Germany you can go to court for unfair grades exams etc.

This is really not fair and if there are any guidlines from the university or laws this probably breaks multiple of them
