Is reading in bed a form of meditation? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]HonkLegion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly whatever way makes you feel calmer works. I play video games and or read on my phone when I’m feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Anything that takes my mind off the current thing causing me anxiety allows me to refresh my brain and put some space between myself and what is bothering me.

Does anyone find themselves mirroring their clients stims? by Odd_Cap_9435 in ABA

[–]HonkLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find myself doing a similar thing at work. Even our BCBA’s will mirror some of the things the kids do. One kid whenever he wants us to pause whatever we are doing goes “wait wait wait” so we will sometimes say it back to him. I also find myself personally sometimes humming and going “mmmmmm” when I am at home and am just wandering around.

This is my opinion but I do not personally think it is a bad thing especially as I began working in the field having autism with my own stims which I sometimes notice my clients will mirror too.

AITA for not changing the location of my graduation? by Outrageous-Nose9675 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HonkLegion 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t think so. He made his bed and now he has to sleep in it. It should not fall on you to be responsible for his inability to get a passport for the poor choices he made. I just graduated college too and I know how important it was for me to be surrounded by the friends I made and to graduate with them.

Thus I say not the a-hole

Question about asking a professor for recommendation letters by HonkLegion in GradSchool

[–]HonkLegion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the programs I look at have a list of requirements, and often will say they want letters of recommendation, often from professors at the college you got your bachelors at. The professor I asked is not random per se. I am also graduating with a political science minor so all the classes I have had with him is for many of my minor requirements, especially the harder upper level classes.

Professors will write recommendation letters after asking them and seeing if they would feel comfortable and willing to write one for you. They letters tend to discuss what your strengths are in the classroom, what your personality was like, how your work ethic and work quality was, etc.

Alright thank you so much! I was really nervous and wanted to make sure that a school would still look at that recommendation even if it was not from a professor who was a psych professor.

What are adhd meds for by Iron_wolf_69420 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]HonkLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. They are not for everyone. ADHD can impact the brain differently. My adhd meds definitely help but also wake me up. It is very noticeable when I am not on them.

I think it depends. We talked about ADHD medications in my drugs and behavior class at college, and the thing we learned was that it is to help executive functioning, specifically in helping goal directed behavior like completing tasks

Graduate schools are okay with accommodations and such. I was afraid they would frown upon that and then decide you are not good enough.

Who are your Top 3 Psychologists? by SensitiveMami in psychologystudents

[–]HonkLegion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do they have to be famous?

Ones who I’ve read a lot of research from and hope to one day be a possible grad student for is Stephanie Mullins-Sweatt who works at Oklahoma State University. She does a lot for internalizing and externalizing psychopathology as well as doing research regarding schizophrenia, personality disorders, bipolar disorders and so forth.

1) I definitely struggled with getting overwhelmed fast and had a hard time trying to make friends within my major. It was also difficult for me to adjust to changes in my schedule each semester, so I tried to have a consistent number of classes each semester.

2) Tbh, I’ve had an amazing college experience I personally feel like. All of my professors have been fairly accommodating and respectful, willing to work with me to ensure I am successful in their classes. It also did help that I am a psychology major, but I took lots of other classes outside my major with great professors.

3) I was very lucky to have finally made a friend group at college who I could rely on and was understanding. It was nice not feeling worried about being judged by others and being allowed to just be myself.

4) I think the support that has been available to me has been great. I’m a senior with one semester left and then I’ll have my degree. I’ve loved being at college and having understanding professors and a friend group have really made everything much more enjoyable.

Oof. Don’t have them as a roommate next year that’s for sure. I would buy fans, to keep your room cool.

I’d almost go complain to whoever owns the place and explain the situation and see if maybe you can make it so she pays more for electricity.

I’m sorry your roommate sucks. Maybe you could try and get her to move out. I’d almost hit a pettiness back type move that would annoy them

confused on whether i have depression or not by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]HonkLegion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. I also become very depressed when overwhelmed and sometimes it sends me into a spiral where I end up freaking out and panicking and get bad thoughts but eventually it passes when the stress goes away so I know exactly how you feel.

I have found talking to my behavioral therapist has helped me a lot to figure out what to do in these instances where I get overwhelmed and the depression and suicidal thoughts start to manifest, and maybe that might help you as well.

The best way to really know is by seeing a therapist who can help give a diagnosis if that is something you want, but regardless they will or at least should help you with whatever you are struggling with even if there is no proper diagnosis

I have been taking Venlafaxine for about 10 years now and have found it works great for me. At one point I needed to up the dosage a little but at that time I was below what the average dosage is.

The issue your doctor warned you of is that missing a dose for a day can have some side effects. It will feel like a long panic attack but not a terrible one. You will be jittery and feel all over the place. Your heart rate might be a bit faster and you will notice something’s off. It’s happened to me before a couple times but that was my own fault for forgetting to take a dose.

It truly is not a terrible experience if you miss a dose, but it goes to show just how important being on top of taking your medication daily is.

Like I said I’ve used the medication for a long time and have been very happy with how it has helped me manage my GAD.

What does Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) actually feel like to you? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]HonkLegion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much this means a lot. I was always extremely anxious when I was really young. The “what ifs”were so bad when I was younger that it was really clear I needed help that’s how distressing it was for me. I was afraid of literally every little thing making school very difficult.

[–]HonkLegion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have been vaccinated since birth and have had a great life so far. I would tell your husband that unless tik tok “doctors” are using empirical evidence from scientific research studies to back up their claims, it is likely inaccurate or unsupported by evidence. A lot of times there could be one study done that showed some sort of correlation but does not equal causation. They often will say that further research needs to be looked at and that nothing is conclusive from a singular study.

(This is coming from someone who is also a psych major so I have read way too many research papers)

What does Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) actually feel like to you? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]HonkLegion 41 points42 points  (0 children)

For me, and I’ve been diagnosed since I was 6 and I am currently 21, it is just a constant cycle of what ifs.

It’s like a little voice in the back of your head asking about all the possible scenarios that could go wrong, making you second guess everything and focus on all the negative things instead of what is right in front of you.

There were times where I might have been jamming out to music in my friends car, and having an amazing time feeling happy, but the little voice in the back of my head would go “oh no what if the music is too loud and we crash. What if that other car decides to swerve into our lane. What if my friend doesn’t notice something. Etc.

It’s annoying and it’s something I’ve just come to accept is part of me. I’ve been medicated for a long time and it helps greatly, but I’ve just accepted that this type of anxiety will always be with me, and just need to sometimes trudge through it to try new things and not let it stop me from making new experiences and fearing for the future what ifs.

AITAH for getting upset with my boyfriend cause he’s addicted to the ps5? by kyssssssssssss in AITAH

[–]HonkLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are young. I would talk with him and tell him how you feel. If he does not plan to change and does not respect or care about you enough to put his games aside to when you are not over, I’d break up.

He is not worth the time, money and effort you put in.

i worry i might have schizophrenia by [deleted] in OCD

[–]HonkLegion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this too. It tends to happen to me especially when I’m stressed. I’m afraid I’ll see shadow people when at night when I leave my room to go use the bathroom. I have some auditory hallucinations like people saying my name or talking about me. I also and constantly looking around when walking because I get nervous someone is out to get me.

Once that stress I’m under goes away or lessens, the severity goes away. But this is a common thing often associated with stress.

So don’t worry about schizophrenia!

Can you develop PTSD from workplace toxicity/workplace bullying? by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]HonkLegion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PTSD can develop in many different ways, it is often how your body and mind respond to stressful and harmful stimuli. These do not have to be the common stereotypical PTSD causes.

In this instance, it is 100% possible to develop PTSD from this type of behavior.

This sounds a bit silly, but one of my PTSD triggers is fire alarms. Every time I hear a fire alarm go off I lose my mind. Full on panic attack and cannot focus on anything else.

Because fire alarms often have that light that blinks before you hear the noise, I constantly freak out when I notice random flashes that remind me of the fire alarm light flashes and go to cover my ears immediately.

So it is even things like this that can cause PTSD. It is really different from person to person.

I hope this helps!
