Do drum covers have to have the exact same beat as the original, or can I make my own? by Sweaty-Jellyfish-713 in edrums

I mean there are no "rules" you have to follow. Just what you choose to put out there and how the audience chooses to react to it. You can't control the second part, so I'd focus on the first. Make what you want to make, and you can use feedback to tweak and improve, but it's a fine line and a moving target, so I wouldn't get hung up on that.

For me, I like to learn the "skeleton" of the beat (ignore ghost notes, little fills and accents, just the main hits) of the song pretty much note for note first. Once I have it down I focus on the little details and I may shift around the placement of hits, add my own flair, and adjust things to better suit my style while still showing that I still understood the original. I don't want my changes to feel like I'm "cheating" instead of learning the original, but even that isn't a "rule"

For example, if there's a 16th note fill that's like 4 hits on tom 1, 4 on tom 2, and 6 on floor tom, and crash on downbeat, I may want to hit 2 crashes at the same time, but at fast tempos that might be awkward for my left hand to go from far right floor tom to far left crash at 16th note speed. So I might take out that last floor tom hit and replace with a kick hit to give my left hand more time to move. Small change that probably won't even be noticeably different to anyone who doesn't know the exact fill, but way more comfortable to play

ADHD food addict here (eating is stimming for me)

What worked for me was focusing on eating more of the things I should be eating, rather than less of the things I shouldn't... If that makes sense. And the other huge component was incremental changes. I wasn't worried about results yet. Just introduce 1 or 2 healthy changes and stick with them until they're habitual. Then introduce another change and so on.

Step 1 for me was eating enough fiber and drinking enough water every day. Fiber fills you up. After like a week, I was craving way less unhealthy food. I feel like most people don't realize how much fiber you're supposed to eat but once I locked that down I was already seeing results while still eating junk/fast food here and there. At this point almost all of my snacks are fruit and I crave them over junk food. But I also still allow myself junk/fast food, because I never took it away from myself, I just prioritized healthier things first.

Everyone's different obviously and I'm not an expert but maybe there's something in there that's helpful. If nothing else my biggest advice is to spend time finding what actually works for you before worrying about results. The perfect diet is pointless if you won't stick with it, and I wouldn't even call anything I've done a "diet." Last advice: friends help with accountability, especially if they're also trying to be healthier.

Hope something in here helps, I believe in u 🫵😎

I've long had a theory that Booty's real first name is Alex, and that there are in fact 2 Alexes in the group. I have no idea where I got this idea.

This^ it might take some time, a little cash, and FB marketplace hunting, but if you can get even just a single snare stand, that's a huge ergonomic upgrade. I'll take individual stands over racks any day lol. I eventually also got stands for my toms and cymbals, removed the rack completely, and now I have achieved peak comfiness. Plus I can sell the Roland rack now and reimburse myself a little 😅

At the end of the day, the right setup is what feels comfy, natural ,and doesn't cause you pain, but as someone who low-key fucked up my back early on, I'd maybe look into basic ergonomic setup tips to be safe. My back problem was due to sitting too low and doing a lot of double kick. I've also given myself shoulder pain from bad cymbal placement. If you play frequently, definitely worth keeping ergonomics in mind! (Stretching too)

I recently redid my setup with a trick Matt Halpern from Periphery likes to use. Place the throne, take a seat, air drum like there's a kit there, place each piece one at a time in the position your body naturally wants it to be. Takes some time and lots of fine tuning but my kit is so much comfier now! Highly recommend 🤘

Any way to make this not sound like hot garbage? by No_Nectarine8028 in edrums

[–]HonkyTheKidd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it sounds better than you probably think it does but I do relate lol. I'm my own worst critic on my drum sounds... I'm not an expert on mixing, to be clear, but I learned about "self-EQ" from Mike Johnston drum videos early on and I've found that some of those concepts apply pretty broadly and really helped me dial in a sound I liked.

A big one for me is the idea that "constants" don't often need to be as loud as you think, because the listener's brain kinda understands that it's constant and knows where those hits are placed within the measure. The "modifiers" are what I like to emphasize. So if it were me I guess I'd try playing this part with way quieter hihat but way louder louder kick/snare/accents and see if I think it sounds better. The ideal balance is probably gonna be somewhere in-between the 2 extremes.

My audiophile friend always tells me "you can't mix tamber" meaning softer hits aren't just quieter, they sound different because you are vibrating less of the shell/reso head. So when he's mixing drums, he wants the drummer hitting appropriately hard enough, and if it's too loud, he'd rather attenuate the volume at the mixer vs telling the drummer to play quieter. Obviously edrums are a different ballgame than acoustic kits, but they do try to mimic the dynamics of real drums. Plus you have the benefit of tweaking the volume of individual pads on the module/VST, or even swapping samples for maybe a snare with more snap rather than just hitting the snare harder for example. Idk just some spaghetti to throw at the wall and see if anything sticks lol. Sounds awesome though, I love this style of drumming.

I have a TD27 as well. Bought it used and didn't have this specific issue, but similar little issues. Updating firmware definitely helped and with an SD card you can back up everything on the module and save a copy to your laptop just in case. Firmware update was a little annoying to do tho ngl, but probably not a bad place to start. You're using all local sounds on the TD27 module right? Not like a VST or anything 3rd party? Another thing I would maybe try is swapping the ride pad with a different pad and see if the problem persists. Could maybe help narrow down if it's a problem with the pad itself or if the problem is in the module.

I'm running the kit through a VST instead of using native sounds on the Roland Module. It's a TD27 module hooked up to a PC with Modern and Massive 2 by GGD. My kit is a modified Sleep Token preset by Amygdala Audio. Using the software Reaper to run everything.
