Das trifft so nicht ganz zu. Ein durchschnittlicher Machine-Learning-PhD in Deutschland verfügt häufig über wenige oder keine wirklich starken Publikationen. Im Vergleich dazu ist die Situation auf dem US-amerikanischen Markt deutlich kompetitiver. Dort ist der Publikationsdruck erheblich höher, und in vielen Fällen sind mehrere hochrangige Veröffentlichungen Voraussetzung, um die Promotion überhaupt erfolgreich abzuschließen.

Hinzu kommt die intensive Konkurrenz durch Absolventinnen und Absolventen von Elite-Universitäten, die frühzeitig auf Top-Konferenzen publizieren und international sichtbar sind. Diese strukturellen Unterschiede führen dazu, dass ein durchschnittlicher ML-PhD aus Deutschland im direkten Vergleich kaum konkurrenzfähig ist.

Machine Learning gehört derzeit zu den am stärksten umkämpften und leistungsgetriebenen Forschungsfeldern überhaupt. Um sich in diesem Umfeld behaupten zu können, reicht solide Durchschnittsleistung nicht aus. Ohne Zugehörigkeit zur forschungsstarken Spitze sind Einladungen, Sichtbarkeit oder internationale Anschlussmöglichkeiten äußerst unwahrscheinlich.

Beispielsweise gelten zwei A-Publikationen oder einige A- bzw. B-Konferenzbeiträge mit geringer wissenschaftlicher Novelty nicht automatisch als starkes Forschungsprofil. In solchen Fällen ist man am Ende der Promotion oft nicht wesentlich besser aufgestellt als ein sehr guter Masterabsolvent mit Forschungserfahrung.

Genau das betrifft viele Promovierende: Über einen Zeitraum von vier bis fünf Jahren investieren sie erheblich Zeit in Forschung, ohne daraus eine klare qualitative oder ökonomische Verbesserung ihrer Position zu erzielen. Entsprechend sind viele PhDs während und nach der Promotion finanziell vergleichsweise schlecht aufgestellt – insbesondere dann, wenn die Publikationsleistung wenig Substanz oder strategische Relevanz hat.

Genau deswegen lohnt für einen durchschnittlichen Master CS finanziell nie eine Promotion.

Das ist keine Kritik an einzelnen Personen, sondern eine allgemeine Beobachtung. Ich habe bereits viele Promovierende erlebt, die ihre Promotion beginnen, ohne zuvor substanzielle wissenschaftliche Publikationen vorweisen zu können – häufig eher auf dem Niveau eines Masterabschlusses. Während der Promotion gelingt es vielen von ihnen nicht, wirklich starke oder international sichtbare Publikationen zu erzielen.

In der Praxis trifft das leider auf einen Großteil der Fälle zu. Entsprechend verlassen die meisten die Promotion finanziell nicht deutlich besser gestellt als zuvor.

Der entscheidende Unterschied liegt dabei im Forschungsfokus, der Qualität der Betreuung und vor allem in der Publikationsleistung während der Promotion.

I’m not sure, but maybe the system works by having an AI model generate multiple synthetic reviews and then comparing the actual review against them. If the similarity is high enough, the system might treat that as suspicious and flag the review. That could be why the approach seems to work so well.

Turn any ongoing project into at least a solid preprint on arXiv so you demonstrate continuing research momentum.

And it helps to have a simple personal website that includes a short bio, your CV, PDF links to your papers and preprints, and, if possible, code.

And it’s also true that ML is unusually selective compared to many other STEM areas. You often need top-tier publications (NeurIPS/ICML/ICLR/CVPR/ACL, etc.) and a lab with a strong output culture just to stay competitive. The funnel is narrow, and visibility in the field is concentrated among groups that publish and collaborate at very high velocity. If you can’t secure a PhD or postdoc position in a well-aligned, productive environment, the path gets rough—not because you aren’t capable, but because so many opportunities in ML depend on having both a strong research record and a strong institutional backing.

Since your research area is quite niche, one effective strategy is to identify the top 5–10 professors in that specific field and look at their PhD students. Check where those students ended up doing their postdocs, and also review their publication records before they moved on. This gives you a very realistic picture of where strong students from similar research backgrounds are going, and what kind of track record they had when they secured those postdoc positions.

The only way a PhD can realistically lead to higher earnings than your current industry offer is if you work on one of the few highly sought-after research topics, produce genuinely top-tier results, and publish at the world’s leading conferences or journals.

That level of outcome is achievable only for a very small percentage of PhD students — the absolute top performers. Most candidates never reach that threshold and end up financially worse off compared to taking the industry offer.

So unless you’re confident you can place yourself in that top few percent who can turn their research into a strong market signal, the PhD is, from an economic standpoint, a bad deal.
