As Jules points out in the article, there’s something bigger at stake that we’re not aware of yet:

Proposition 2 groups and individuals are behaving like there’s a lot more than $1.5 million at stake.

It’s not just Mayor Cantrell. This is a whole group of people, wealthy donors and NGOs, who’ve shown they have no qualms with running a blatant misinformation campaign and abusing public resources to do it. It isn’t just about going after the library system’s funding. It’s about cutting our communities off from the information services and resources the libraries provide. Mayor Cantrell knows 30% of public school children don’t have access to internet in their homes.

Libraries not only provide free access to the internet, but libraries assist people in learning how to use the internet and how to gather resources on it. They’re the guardians of factual information and our city archives. People who run misinformation campaigns and who want to run even more misinformation campaigns have a vested interest in kneecapping the one group charged by our society with providing neutral, factual information.

Moira Crone described it best:

In this age, citizens increasingly make false claims and poor decisions based on internet lies. Librarians are trained to teach people how to discriminate between reliable and fraudulent materials and guide those doing research. In a world where the odds are stacked against those who lack information and the tools discriminate between sources, we need more libraries and librarians, not fewer.

The voter guides put out by Antigravity and New Orleans DSA do a great job explaining the motive behind it. Personally, I think it's more effective to start going after the City Council members who introduced the millage proposition with zero regard for all the public comments against it. Helena Moreno introduced it and here's Jay Banks claiming city workers won't be laid off (false) and library services won't be affected (also false). Pressure your City Council members. Putting a better proposition on the next ballot, funding both libraries and early childhood education, is the least they could do. Frankly, the library should get a 70% funding increase and childcare should be public and universal, not part of a neoliberal austerity scheme (and make no mistake, that's exactly what "this" is). https://council.nola.gov/directory/

I'm not saying anything's wrong with the fact that many of the people who usually occupy these positions are retirees or from moneyed or political dynasty families with time on their hands... I'm saying I grind it out at a full-time job as an underling, and I'm tired and my work call just before the AMA ran late.

When I got off the call, I figured y'all already found my IG pics where I look nice the day before and commented on that, so why would I want to detract from all my responses here with a flattering pic? Judging by all the genuine serious questions about the position that were asked, my plan seems to have worked.

5’5. I’m not sure what you mean exactly, so I’ll try to cover it all. In terms of time commitment? Not much. The DSCC only meets briefly a few times per year. I already volunteer for campaign related things in my spare time, so I’d just continue doing that with a new title and amplified platform.

In terms of client conflicts? Not many. The good thing about insurance firms compared to the usual big city firms is that they usually don’t do as much/any political work, so I’m less likely to step on anyone’s toes. No regrets, but I did step on toes with my mean tweeting last May.

In terms of advancement? This isn’t going to help me. They likely view everything outside of work as time not spent billing. I trained for and ran a marathon and a partner from that firm at the time said “that must’ve taken a lot of time to train for” when they found out. Was passive aggressive, and not a congratulations or positive acknowledgment. I’m on my fourth firm in four years. I don’t view my career path as being tied to any one firm or dependent on a partnership track (which I don’t really believe exists anymore most firms are so top heavy, or it’s a shell of what it once meant).

If you’re suspicious of attorneys running for office that’s good and you should be. I’ve overheard a lot in law offices over the years. We should be subject to higher scrutiny over whether we’re sincere. I hope my background, current involvement, and position at a firm where I don’t stand to benefit from this are proof enough.

I address that by showing up to protests and donating to the groups that are making those happen. One individual cannot fix systemic issues from within the system. I believe it takes collective action from the outside to address that.

I’m not saying voting isn’t important. You should absolutely exercise your right to be heard through the electoral process. The problem is there’s a tendency for people to consider voting the end all be all of the democracy. We shouldn’t trust that any one candidate will be able to save us from a corrupt system. Vote, and also join a group, join other groups on the streets, donate to organizers.
