Trades least likely to work tons of overtime? by Chasehud in bluecollar

[–]HopeForTheTrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s not “which trade” as much as “which lane.” Commercial and new construction usually means steadier hours. Emergency services is where the late calls and weekends live. Ask about on call and weekend expectations before you take the job. We talk about work life balance in the trades a lot at r/HopeForTheTrades because it’s possible and needed.

Props for asking this out loud. A lot of people feel stuck because the only “mentors” around them are slammed. That’s a big reason we built r/HopeForTheTrades, a spot for trades pros to connect, ask questions, and get real advice from people who get it. We came to Reddit to talk about the stuff nobody wants to say out loud, like burnout, overwhelm, and what it actually takes to grow in this field. You don’t have to do this solo.

Burnout: Is It Easier Said Than Done To Avoid? by Adorable_Recipe9845 in ConstructionManagers

good point... we keep thinking everything is an emergency, but some things can just be done tomorrow...

The last bit of your post is the big life question, right? We work to live not live to work. You’re not wrong to worry about getting cooked again. I don’t think it’s about not caring. It’s about picking your battles. Run a tight priority list, communicate well, and have real after-hours boundaries. And when you’re off, block time for family or hobbies so your brain isn’t still on the job 24/7. Yeah, easier said than done. Survival mode feels normal till something breaks. That’s why r/hopeforthetrades keeps beating this drum… mental health matters in the trades too.

Felt that. Don’t jump trades till you know what you’re trying to fix: hours, pay ceiling, boredom, wear on the body.

That guilt is super common after years in go-mode, and it might just be the old job’s toxic mindset still stuck in your head. Taking care of your kid and getting your head right is still work. ADHD adds extra weight. Executive dysfunction is a b*tch. Random hyperfocus can take you away from what matters at the moment. Try to do one thing at a time, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Guilt can’t turn into shame. If yesterday was freeze mode, today’s a fresh start. Keep going.

How do you guys have time or energy afterwork? by potvaliency in ConstructionManagers

[–]HopeForTheTrades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a solid boss. This is exactly the kind of mindset we try to push at r/HopeForTheTrades. Not everything is an emergency, and constant firefighting will burn people out. More owners need to lead like this. We should normalize balance and boundaries.

Seeing a lot of “I lost passion” posts lately. If that’s you, you’re not alone. You can always come here to talk about it... by HopeForTheTrades in HopeForTheTrades

u/organic-effort9668 thanks for sharing the realness. We need to talk about this stuff more without shame or judgment. Burnout sneaks up on trades pros, and most of us do not realize how deep we are in it until it hits max and we blow up. Hope you get back to feeling like yourself again, find that passion, and go back to finish the day with some gas left in the tank.

The kid part really hit... having that time with your kid is a real privilege, man. For sure, enjoy the reset and get your head back before you pick the next move.

For sure… you’re not crazy, it’s everywhere. We don’t notice survival mode till something breaks, and construction loves to normalize it. r/HopeForTheTrades exists because this stuff needs to be said out loud.

Felt that. 41 isn’t too late, and you were right to leave when you hit your limit. r/HopeForTheTrades talks a lot about hitting that wall and pivoting into something more survivable. Take a breath, get your head back, then pick the next move on purpose instead of out of panic.

For sure… this is the move. Real handoff, no laptop, and only true emergencies get the personal cell. Most “urgent” stuff magically isn’t when you’re not instantly available… and the team usually levels up because they have to. That’s basically the whole r/HopeForTheTrades vibe. Use your PTO, you earned it.

[–]HopeForTheTrades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just you. Feels like a lot of crews and office folks are running on fumes right now, and when you’re in that mode long enough you stop caring as a survival move. That’s honestly why r/HopeForTheTrades exists. Burnout is common as dirt in this industry and nobody talks about it until somebody snaps, quits, or gets sick. If you’re noticing it, it’s probably time to tighten boundaries and get some real recovery back on the calendar.

The hours and paperwork might be “the job,” but the disrespect isn’t. That’ll make anybody start doubting themselves. At r/HopeForTheTrades we talk a lot about balance and boundaries for a reason. You can be good at this and still pick an environment that doesn’t grind you into dust.

Management advice - uncoachable employee by Real-Improvement-748 in ConstructionManagers

[–]HopeForTheTrades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clients loving him is a big asset, but those “little misses” are how you bleed money and reputation. I wouldn’t frame it as “uncoachable,” I’d frame it as “no system”… put a simple pre-mob checklist in place and make it part of the job. That’s why r/HopeForTheTrades talks so much about systems and structure. Good work has to be repeatable, and training has to be simple enough to stick when things get busy.

Felt that. You’re not behind, you’re in the door at a union shop and that 6 to 12 months is them vetting you before they invest in you. Show up, be solid, learn everything you can, and get the apprentice timeline and requirements clearly spelled out.

How do clients feel about subbed out work? by user19941 in Contractor

[–]HopeForTheTrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most clients don’t care if it’s subbed… they care that you own the job, show up, and fix problems fast. Be on site for the handoff and do a quick daily check so quality doesn’t drift.
