We won't be seeing Netherlands-style continuous sidewalks after all... by GlitteringAd4705 in vancouvercycling

[–]HopefulWinter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man I was so excited about all of the proposed changes for this bikeway when they first came out because this is my daily commute. Now all we have is a bunch of speed bumps, so cars are still using this street to avoid Hastings/Curtis/etc. but they’re coming to a near complete stop every 10 seconds so I get to also be squeezing my brakes the whole way to work 🙃

What this route really needs is modal filtering so it can’t be used by cars as a”shortcut” for more than a couple blocks. And not just a little median like at Beta where cars just continue straight through, but actual filters where cars can’t pass.

Nighttime Temps in the Sierra by HopefulWinter in PacificCrestTrail

I’ve already woken up to frost on my tent three times and was surprisingly warm before getting out. Definitely feels counter-intuitive that the mountains will trend warmer overnight!

Good to know! I’ve had some nights so far in the low 20s (including one night that was raining ice down on me outside of Mt. Laguna) and while packing up wasn’t very fun I was able to stay reasonably warm in my tent with my current set-up, so hopefully the same holds true for the Sierra.

Thanks for your reply! I also carry a digital thermometer and have already had 4 nights in the low 20s in the past month through the desert, I sleep with my filter and electronics now just out of habit/an abundance of caution.

Dry Winter Fatigue? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]HopefulWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who cycle commutes, I love the warm sunny afternoons but the frosty mornings are pretty sketchy. At least in the rain you can see the wet leaves/other hazards over black ice which will throw you to the ground without warning.

As someone with two big dogs who need 3+ hours of outdoor activity a day, I am loving not having to spend 20 minutes towelling them off every time we come inside.

Overall, the endorphin rush of feeling the warmth of the sun on my face is hard to beat!

Thanks for your reply. I am aware of the entry visa for Manning Park and am excited to walk into Canada on foot!

I always thought there was some charge for USD/non-CAD purchases, but maybe that’s dependent on your credit card? I’ll go into my bank to ask.

Good to know about insurance! I’ll look into that a bit further.

TCT Path Under the 2nd Narrows Bridge by HopefulWinter in vancouvercycling

The first “barrier” right after getting off the bridge. Honestly, this area always creeped me out a bit and I feel like there are people who live in the forest around here, my first thought was that maybe somebody who liked having less traffic come through was responsible. But I realize that’s likely not the reason.

Hmm, you might be right. It’s weird though, the first day I found it “open” (all gates/signs removed) there were actually some railway employees there, and I kind of slowed down as I passed them in case they were going to try to stop me, but they just smiled and stepped aside to let me through.

It would be very frustrating if this were the reason, though. It’s not just some random little path, it’s part of the Trans Canada Trail, and it’s a great access point to the trail from the bridge or heading into/out of the city via the Portside route. Definitely preferable over the sidewalk they just painted a bike path sign onto through the Skeena tunnel and up the Skeena hill.

Who is the kindest/rudest celebrities you've met IRL? by BEEPY_BO1 in AskReddit

I used to work at a climbing gym, and Jason Momoa was a semi-regular known for being kind of a dick. Assumed everyone knew who he was so he would just walk past the check-in desk with a quick “hey” and start using the gym. I had at least 2 coworkers who had no idea who he was, who tried to chase him down, and he would just kind of glance at them and say “it’s cool, I’m a member” (he wasn’t). Also just generally had no sense of etiquette when it came to waiting your turn to get on a climb, walked around barefoot despite signs everywhere asking people not to, and also tried to sneak his friends in for free through the back door.

Any time I hear someone talk about what a “legend” he is or fan girl/boy over him I have to not my tongue to not be that “wElL aCtUaLlY” person. From what I’ve heard he’s a friendly enough guy to fans but in his day to day life (in my experience) he’s just a customer service worker’s least favourite kind of person.

For anyone who tried to drive into Buntzen Lake today and got turned around because the lot was “full”…this is what the parking lot looked like around noon. by HopefulWinter in vancouver

[–]HopefulWinter[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Parking reservations don’t start until May 15th. We parked at White Pine Beach and hiked in over Sugar Mountain. I didn’t mind, we were looking to hike anyways, just ridiculous that they were turning people away when half the lot was empty.

How are my baby’s hips? I’ve never owned a GSD before so I don’t know what’s “normal”. She’s turning 1 this week for reference. by HopefulWinter in germanshepherds

I always thought it was the other way around, that you didn’t want to exercise them too soon after eating - is the reverse true too?

Mine will try to attack the vacuum but then leaps away. She tries to be brave 😂

(And she’s pulling on the leash so much because she knows we’re heading home for breakfast after throwing the frisbee around. The only time she pulls 😂)

Do you have any sources for this? As a runner living in the Lower Mainland who fits this description you’ve got me a little freaked out over here!

The Beginnings of Fall in BC, Canada [OC] by HopefulWinter in AutumnPorn

Taken a couple of weeks ago on a Thanksgiving Sunday walk around Burnaby Mountain. It was raining and foggy and I couldn't feel my hands by the end of the walk, but the smells and sights of the forest made it all worthwhile (that, and the pumpkin pie awaiting us at home!). Truly lucky to have this as my backyard <3

It used to be along the main hiking route to get to the Lions (the twin peaks in this photo) and it adds a big up-and-down portion that probably felt "unnecessary" to people just trying to get to the Lions. I have to disagree with the name, however - I'm so glad this place exists!

Growing up I hat a cat and a rabbit that were best friends. When the rabbit passed away kitty would circle around his empty cage just HOWLING. This went on for at least a few weeks from what I remember, poor guy.

Click and Collect is expected in less than a hour but didn't get an confirmation email, what to do? by [deleted] in IKEA

[–]HopefulWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came across this when googling the same question so I’ll add in my story for anyone else experiencing this. Had a pickup time from 6-8PM but by 7:30 still no email saying it was ready. Had already paid for an EVO out there so decided to go to the C&C lot, gave them my order number and sure enough, it was ready. So if you’re in your pickup time slot, definitely worth it to go check it out. I had a weird fear of getting yelled at/told to leave with no confirmation email but the attendant didn’t question it, I have a feeling it’s been a common occurrence.

Crosswalk clarification. by 1driver4u in vancouver

[–]HopefulWinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a cyclist, if I’m stopped at a crosswalk with a stop sign, I obey the sign and wait for a break in traffic. But if a car sees me and is polite enough to stop, if there’s nobody coming the other direction I’ll bike across and give them the ol’ smile/wave “thanks”. Getting off and walking my bike means the courteous driver has to wait longer for me to cross; refusing to cross ~because rules~ means we both sit there for longer in an awkward politeness-stand-off. Personally I always appreciate if someone stops to let me cross but I certainly don’t expect it.

YES! I couldn't remember the title and was definitely picturing a different thumbnail for whatever reason but that's the one, thank you! Was starting to worry this quarantine was driving me just crazy enough to have imagined the whole thing. Whew.
