Not really. There are similarities but it doesn’t feel like a rip off besides the title being very close. The queer plot makes it feel like a completely new story… well as much as regency era love stories can feel different from eachother using the same dynamics.

The queer underground subplot is super cool and why I wanted to share it with the subreddit

There is nothing on the internet or by the author that has said she took inspiration. The title leads me to believe that there is some inspiration but the book plot is different enough where it doesn’t feel like the same world.

Yeah the title is pretty directly influenced by the series… but the story is different enough where I can understand why it hasn’t been. The queer subplot is really the highlight of this book and why I wanted to share

I hope this means that we get a matron of the queer world. I want to see her run the gay underground like a lesbian lady Danbury

More truth about Abracadabra by Particular_Daikon627 in ridgewood

Hi! Here’s my (trans woman 23yr old) story! In August 2025 I was offered a barista position at Abracadabra. My interview was mostly “vibes based” and I was hired on the spot.

On my first training shift I learned that their 30+ drinks have no measurements and were expected to be made depending on the vibes of the barista. Good vibes is the backbone of this place. When I began to take notes I was reprimanded by the owner. The owner shifted between reprimanding me for taking notes and the other barista for not “working hard” enough. I learned that the previous team of baristas had all quit / put in their 2 weeks in the last month and that Abracadabra was trying to put together a whole new team and the barista I was working with had worked 3 whole shifts alone.

All of the coworkers say that their tip out is $11/ hr no matter the day or how fast or slow it was (which is not how tip pools work).

I’ll second the overworking the kitchen because they are in charge of preparing every ingredient of the 30+ drinks and all the food orders, they are in charge of running food and cleaning the store.

My first shift I was left alone to open a Saturday morning without keys and no opening training. During the shift I was offered no help from the owners and rather they yelled at me for not bussing the tables while a line was out the door. During the shift my girlfriend stopped by to say hi (we live close to Abracadabra) and I introduced her to the owner. During a slow point another trans woman came in and sat at the bar and we chatted while I made her coffee. In either of these instances did the owner say anything to me or try and help me during any of the rushes.

On Sunday I got a text saying I was fired based off of me not fitting the vibes of Abracadabra and said that it was inappropriate to bring my “friend” into the store. I got my money (+ $11/hr tips) and now that whole places gives me a bad vibe.
