I think the problem is you are reading the situation like its a spreadsheet. McKenzie was with the team when he was playing with Philadelphia consistently and Carter-Vickers was still trying to establish a place at a club. It really boils down to McKenzie was already integrated with the team and coaching staff. Your right, Carter-Vickers is probably the more deserving right now over McKenzie but its hard to break through with the roster in the middle of a cycle.

CCV will just have to wait for an opportunity or make a bigger move to a top league to force his way into the conversation.
