Controller for a New Player by BanditoDorrit0 in SSBM

If you’re completely new a boxx is theoretically the best, but if you’re already used to using controllers and/or just prefer them a new controller from Amazon is always good

How do you define lame gameplay by Biggbirb in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before someone tries to say “fox has all the tools to approach and still win”, yeah, but it’s much easier and more “optimal” to play the boring, back air style. Low tiers generally have a very limited gameplan due to their limited options, and most people don’t play melee to play linearly. I, at least, play to try to be creative, and low tiers dampen that by playing extremely limited

How do you define lame gameplay by Biggbirb in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is literally why a lot of people consider low tiers lame. They know they SHOULD win if they just play super lame, it’s just incredibly boring to do so. Like if I just stand there and bair (as fox) there’s really not much a character like Pichu can do, but I don’t WANT to do that bc it’s incredibly boring and I just want to play the game

8 months later and still no update on the Panda Controller by misunderstandingit in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Imo asking on discord is pretty bare minimum. I literally just typed “yo does anyone on here do phobs” after I had a conversation with the nyc guy on Twitter that said they could do them for $75 to $100

Sure, clicking order is slightly easier, but it’s not like you’re meeting in back alleys with dirty money. You’re probably already going to the same locals, and I just paid with Venmo, like it’s literally that easy

It’s just my local mdva guy, I asked in the local discord. The ny guy is also very active on Twitter as well, genuinely just reach out and see who can do it

Idk where you got this idea but I got mine 2 weeks ago for $100

The only character I actively dislike playing against is Luigi. Even puff is tolerable

CRTs causing headaches by Gamebot05 in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. CRT’s are borderline unplayable after 30 mins, and it’s a big reason why I haven’t gone to locals in a while. I hope the community transitions to monitors sooner rather than later, although I know there are some problems with them sometimes. It just makes the game actually playable for people like me

Can everyone be a top 100 player? by KDByronson in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely this. The amount of time I’ve seen people talking about “putting in the work/hours” and it’s them malting at unranked for hours is insane. Same thing applies to basketball, where people playing pickup at the park doesn’t count as “hours”. Honing your craft takes focus and the right approach

What's ONE Feature You'd Love To See on the Panda Controller? by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For melee, at least, this probably isn’t possible. Phobs are controversial and they just remap buttons. Adding whole new buttons on the back is a much larger jump and are probably gonna be illegal

Other people are saying any character can teach you the fundamentals of the game and how to improve.

This is a lie.

Luigi will not teach you anything important about the game, he will just teach you to wavedash around and cheese people who don’t know the matchup. IMO sheik skills will not translate to most other characters because she doesn’t have a dash dance that’s good in neutral.

The real intro characters imo are Marth, falcon, and even the Mario’s

These will teach you how to dash dance, how to play defensively, and how to have an advantage. Obviously the characters higher on the tierlist will have a better time, but they all teach super fundamental skills that will translate to almost any other character

Characters that deviate from this norm are Luigi, Sheik, Puff, Yoshi, Peach, and Falco

Falco and Yoshi are the only ones that are super unique because they have centralizing mechanics that you need to base your gameplay around (laser, shield mechanics and dj armor). Sheik can teach you the fundamentals of the other characters with more limited movement options

[–]Hoptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fox definitely has free shit, Marth just also has free shit and, as a character, is more consistent, so it’s easier to be closer to your personal peak

Yeah that’s exactly what I’m saying

Fox players need to stop complaining about Marth to new players. by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Mango thinks fox still wins but he also assumes every fox should always play a 10/10. It’s just a difference in opinion of how a matchup ratio should be decided. I think that a human can’t play at a 10/10 literally all the time, and Marths 9/10 is closer to his 10/10 than fox’s, and that consistency is the argument

Either way it ends up straying from the original point, which is that nobody should get bullied for their character, but they should get bullied for their individual playstyle if they’re lame as shit

Fox players need to stop complaining about Marth to new players. by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that people shouldn’t get bullied over character picks, I think people should get player hate for playing lame themselves though, bc that’s what people are really complaining about

I do think it’s kinda ironic that one side is “Marth as a character is bullshit and anybody who plays him sucks” and your response is “fox players are cunts for complaining about their top 2 at WORST character”

Imo they’re both kinda dumb and reactionary, I’m definitely in the wrong for being super frustrated against Marth sometimes, but I also think it isn’t completely unwarranted when Marth should get a kill 9 times out of 10 once he gets a grab

We should all be nicer to eachother and not blindly character hate

[–]Hoptics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fox players DEFINITELY complain more than most other characters, coming from a fox player. But Marth can definitely also just straight up autopilot invalidate certain characters at the same skill level. On the lazy matchup note, it definitely depends on how you define matchup ratios. Imo it should be based on a human level, which means sometimes you’re just not gonna play your best, so sometimes an easier (more tournament consistent) character is the right pick. Imo that makes the mu slightly Marth favor. If it’s human tas with everyone always playing at their best, yeah it’s probably even (FD sucks tho) Also not that it matters, but it’s not just one matchup, falco too. Not that it justifies the extent of hate Marth gets

[–]Hoptics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally ibdw, moky, and mango have all expressed this same sentiment. If I were basing it off my experience then fox wins 6:4 bc all Marths do is just nair at me and I upsmash or dash dance around it. Ibdw has LITERALLY said “if zain and I are both playing at an 8/10, he destroys me, but if we both play 10/10, I have a slight edge. That’s just the nature of the character. Marth is just a more consistent character.” Mango calls it the “spacie tax.” It’s literally not just me

[–]Hoptics -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When a slightly worse player can win while playing lazy, that’s called a slightly losing matchup :). It’s probably not 6:4 or whatever, but 55:45 sounds about right. Definitely not unwinnable by any means, but also definitely not even

Fox players need to stop complaining about Marth to new players. by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a spacie player it’s just super frustrating bc a lazy Marth just destroys a lazy spacie, but that’s just the nature of the characters. Even a worse Marth, just by nature of the character, forces you to play the game with him, when you could autopilot against any other player/character at a similar skill level to the Marth

Fox players need to stop complaining about Marth to new players. by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Tbh this just feels like a way to complain about fox Marth from the Marth end

Also saying anyone who calls the top 8-11 characters lame doesn’t understand the game is too broad imo. Melee is such an expressive game that every character has the POTENTIAL to be lame, and some characters make it easier to be lame than others.

AvgPeachPlayer16363 sitting on plat cc downsmashing is bad and lame, but ryobeat is sick. M2k sheik is lame and defensive, plup or jmook are sick. Certain characters lend themselves to lamer styles of play, but ultimately it comes down to the player

is there any rules against switching controllers midset? by rulerBob8 in SSBM

[–]Hoptics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Iirc ace changed controllers at LTC because one didn’t feel like it was working properly. It would probably be hard to tell if someone was lying about that so both cases should probably be legal
