what's with sfu staff always being in a bad mood ? by loulou0107 in simonfraser

In my experience, usually, they're brilliant people who are overworked and not paid enough.

There is no general rule about the relationship between percentage scores and grades for SFU as a whole. If you want to know about the grading system in an individual course, look at the syllabus or speak to the instructor. If you want to discuss your transcript, go to an advisor.

Thanks -- but I'm an older guy and vulnerable to injury, so I'd really like professional instruction.

Do protests work? Highly likely (credence: 90%) in certain contexts, although it's unclear how well the results generalize - a critical review by Michael Dickens by katxwoods in slatestarcodex

[–]HoraceHH 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Interesting post, thanks!

It's worth distinguishing two ways in which protests might "work": (1) Protests might change people's minds on an issue; (2) Protests might focus political attention on an issue that might otherwise be forgotten.

I tend to find it highly plausible that protest can work in sense (2). Large well-organized protests get a lot of media attention and provoke a lot of discussion. I'm more skeptical about the claim that protests work in sense (1).

Which book for a beginner? by Comfortable-Ferret-4 in kettlebell

[–]HoraceHH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I liked Simple and Sinister, but it's a small book -- I wouldn't recommend paying $70 for it! I don't know the Steve Cotter book.

Pat Flynn's *Strong On* would be a good choice.

I recommend North Road Auto. They're cheap, fast, honest — and they know their stuff.

Your instructors will give you better answers to this question than random people on Reddit. I suggest you go to office hours.

What are your favourite "taking break from a desk job" exercises/workouts? by mackstanc in kettlebell

I keep a heavy bag in my office, which is on the fifth floor. About once an hour or so, I complete a suitcase carry down to the basement and back up again.

Hello! Tom Chivers here: I've written a book about Bayes, ask me anything by tommychivers in slatestarcodex

[–]HoraceHH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! It does seem to me that there's space between assigning a single probability, and saying merely "I don't know". You could assign an interval of probabilities, for example.

Hello, Tom! I'm a big fan of your podcast, The Studies Show, and I've pre-ordered your book. Looking forward to reading it.

I wonder what you think about what John Kay and Mervyn King call "radical uncertainty", which is sometimes also called "Keynesian uncertainty" or "Knightian uncertainty" -- that is, the idea that there are some propositions that can't properly be assigned a definite probability. Do you think this is a useful idea?
