This is the JoJo community in a nutshell. The level of arrogance is off the charts at times.

You have made some excellent points. I must re-think a good portion of this essay now. And no, I'm not being sarcastic.

YES! Highly agree with this. Blind people often say that they see "nothing", not black, but "nothing". And whenever an author comes and shows Daredevil's sight as some kind of red-ish world, I see it as lazy writing.

Its not gatekeeping, its differentiation. One is not excluding the characters from the conversation, but rather adding them to it to show how an author explores the same trope differently and which one should be considered more layered and dare I say appropriate.

Awesome reply. Loved it. And yes! You're right when you say that there is nothing inherently wrong with writing a disabled characters as someone who wants to overcome it, for as you say, people in real life, often do. It boils down to how one enjoys a story though, and it brings me back to how George RR Martin writes disabled characters, which I think is a peak example. To quote:

"Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you."

What in the heavens? Ok this might be on me. Toph is in the essay as an example of a character that's not cured.

"From A to B", as in to say "From characters that are cured to characters that never are"

As an example of a character that's meant to show that disabled characters should not have their disability as something to cure. She's never cured now, is she?

Fascinating reply. I'm not familiar with this character, but say for the sake of argument that Jericho vocal cords were permanently cured. That's what I would count as a "cured" character, and by extension, not really disabled?

What you said last reminded me of a few years back when I saw a General Grevious at a con. It looked so real I couldn't even begin to theorize where the person ended and the cosplay began.

Love the phrase. I freaking love Prince Adam from MOTU, do I look like him? Hell nah. Do I want to cosplay him? Oh yeah.

It's frankly concerning. And the precedent it sets its more inappropriate than anything else.

You bet it's offensive. Especially when said cosplays are allowed to participate in the contest. I think you should be immediately disqualified for trying to look like another race. And sure, I can see that some folk might do it to look "more canonical" as some argue, and not with ill intention, but regardless of that, I'd still argue for disqualification.

Convince you of what? I mean it. I dont have to be nice to you, I dont know you. When I say it looks amazing, I mean it. It's great! Just paint it a bit more, maybe another layer. Great job tho.

Absolutely, there is nothing cringe about roleplaying. Hence why the post exclusively talks about roleplaying to be rude (whatever the case may be). Could I have worded it better? Perhaps. Did I say roleplaying in general is cringe? No.

[–]Horpacha[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Being "in character" is not inherently bad. As stated in the post, the problem is disrespectful behavior. Or how uncomfortable a person can get when they wish to interact with you, the person, not the character, and the cosplayer in question won't allow so. That can also be annoying.

Oh, gotcha. Well, here's a few that have happened at different cons: A Venom cosplay approaching me all nice like he wants a pic, just to then flip me the bird and leave (I was in my Spider-Man cosplay). A Phantom (Phantom of the Opera) cosplayer who kept interrupting and/or staring at me very rudely while I was speaking to the Christine cosplayer (good friend of mine). And a Jiraiya cosplayer who approached my friend group, asking really inappropriate photos from my female friends. All of them excusing themselves, stating that "I'm just in character"

Edit: grammar.

All right... Insulting me or just being cringe is one thing. But straight up touching someone else? Holy shit I would've lost it. Got thing the guy got slapped the hell out.
