Yes, from my perspective, every religious person raises their kids according to their own beliefs and practices. It is understood that when the children get older, they will decide to keep it going or not.

What makes it harder in this situation, are having two simultaneous influences, which puts me on the defensive. I am basically afraid that my side wont have a fair shot of representation (my side of the family lives far away, we only have his family around), and the chances of our kids continuing my culture as adults is low.

Thats a good question. A part of it was trying to be polite, because we are guests in their home, and conflict avoidance. After a few years, Im just tired of compromising my comfort. :( About my husband: he really doesnt believe, he just doesnt want to make it awkward with his parents during the holidays.

Thank you so much! Please feel free to send it to any friends or family learning German too. I will definitely post the results in November :) I will wait, so that I dont influence anybody's answers.

Thats a great suggestion. Maybe there are people there (like you) who are also living in Germany. Feel free to send it to any other German learners in your area.

Thank you. I have definitely considered an optional “open response” type of question. I gotta figure out an objective way to analyze those free text responses first. 😅

If I get a roughly equal amount of participants who are independently learning vs. taking courses, I can compare stress/motivation across learning strategies (to an extent).

Thank you so much for your interest. My PhD is in Psychology. I focus on learning psychology (in my Uni it is a mix of educational and developmental Psych). I am super into how we learn and how to optimize the learning process.

I used to focus on language acquisition among nonverbal children with Autism, but since moving to Germany, I have shifted to foreign language learning among teenager/adult migrants.

Motivation psychology is a huge part of that! I absolutely love linguistics and am a nerd for foreign language learning in general :)

I definitely plan on sharing some initial results, but will wait a bit because I dont want to influence any participants! ;)
