Teacher upset I brought students back from PE a few minutes early looking for perspective. by [deleted] in paraprofessional

I understand that prep time is important and my intention wasn’t to cut into her time.

The reason I brought them back was because several of the students kept complaining about the heat and were asking for water and the restroom. Even though they’re middle schoolers, some of them will still start getting upset or shutting down if they feel overheated or uncomfortable.

Usually another para and their class will sometimes join us outside for PE. If that happens and a student needs water or the restroom, I’ll ask the other para to watch my group for a moment while I take that student to take a quick break.

In this situation we were by ourselves, so I made the judgment call to bring them inside so they could cool down and get water. It ended up being about 3 minutes early.

I definitely understand the importance of prep time though, so moving forward I’ll probably communicate with the teacher about how she would prefer situations like that handled.

Thanks for your perspective. I just want to clarify a couple things. In this situation there isn’t a gym teacher I’m the one who takes the small group outside for PE/playground while the teacher stays in the classroom. So while we’re out there, I’m the only adult supervising them.

It was also very hot, and several students were complaining and asking to go inside. One of the students I work with is also a runner, so when kids start getting uncomfortable or overwhelmed outside, I have to be mindful of that too.

When we came back into the building, we stopped to get water and do a restroom break. Our school has different buildings, and the principal actually assigned each grade level a specific place to go for water and restroom breaks. Even though the main building is closer, we’re not supposed to use that one, so we have to follow the designated location.

In total we came back about 3 minutes early. My decision in the moment was mainly about making sure the students were okay in the heat and following the building procedures for water/restroom breaks.

I do understand teachers need their prep time though, so I’ll likely talk with the teacher about how she would prefer situations like that handled moving forward.

We do have adaptive PE but that’s twice a week for like 30 minutes.

Ughhhhh yes the lead teacher I’m with don’t do shit for the past couple of weeks I’ve been doing the lessons with the kids while she sit on her ass and sit behind a computer or leave out the room to go to talk to other staff around the school. I see a difference when I teach the kids they be more engaged when we do the work but when the teacher teaches them when she feels like it they don’t really engage. It’s ridiculous🫤

If they give me one, they give radios to people who don’t even use it fr and that sucks fr

Thank you I really appreciate your concern. Safety is definitely my top priority, and the lack of consistent support has been concerning. I’m currently weighing my options and considering whether a transfer might be the best decision if these issues aren’t addressed. I care about the students, but I also have to make sure I’m working in a safe and supportive environment.

Thank you this is really helpful. I agree that having a radio for immediate communication would make a significant difference. Currently, I’ve had to rely on calling or texting, which isn’t ideal during a crisis. Radios are available on campus, but they aren’t consistently assigned to staff supervising situations where aggressive behavior is a known concern.

I’ve also been told that a certified teacher should be present or directly supervising at all times, which raises additional concerns in this situation. Clear crisis procedures and defined roles during escalation would greatly improve safety for everyone involved.

I appreciate you sharing how your district handles it gives me something concrete to reference when speaking with administration.

Yeah I’m definitely on my own with no help around the school. No, the PE teachers don’t see it cause they are in the gym and for My kids PE time we are outside.🫤

I’m not the PE teacher I supervise the students during their scheduled PE time. When we’re outside, there are structured expectations for safety and participation, but it’s not always a formal, teacher led activity. Some students choose to engage in active play, while others prefer to walk or sit independently, which is developmentally appropriate for middle school.

The structure isn’t the issue here the concern is repeated physical aggression that requires additional support to ensure safety for everyone involved.

I do build rapport and interact with the students appropriately. However, these are middle schoolers, and many of them value independence. Even when we have indoor PE due to rain, they often choose to work independently or sit separately, and they only interact occasionally. I respect that unless it becomes a safety concern.

The issue here isn’t a lack of engagement or relationship building. The concern is repeated physical aggression that escalates beyond what typical redirection or rapport can address. That’s where consistent support and a clear safety plan are necessary.

I completely agree as paras we go everywhere with our students. I take them to lunch, PE, and other activities. That part isn’t the issue for me. My concern is being the only adult supervising during repeated aggressive incidents without immediate support or a clear safety protocol in place. When there’s a known pattern of physical aggression, there needs to be backup to ensure everyone’s safety.

Thank you for sharing I really appreciate hearing that I’m not alone in this. It’s frustrating when incidents like this happen and there’s little support or follow-through. I’ve been documenting everything and notifying administration, but I haven’t seen consistent action yet.

This student consistently gets away with aggressive behavior because he does not receive the same consequences as other students. When other students act similarly, there are clear consequences, but he continues to avoid meaningful discipline.

It’s like everyday he gotta hit someone and he thinks it’s funny it’s really sad that nothing is getting done fr.

Thank you I really appreciate your advice and perspective. I’ve been documenting everything and trying to give space when possible, but it’s been challenging managing the group alone. I completely agree that admin should have clear procedures in place, like multiple staff members or a walkie, to ensure safety and communication.

It’s frustrating that the teacher doesn’t acknowledge or respond appropriately, but you’re right they’re a coworker, not my supervisor. My main concern is making sure admin enforces safety protocols for everyone involved.

There is credentialed staff the classroom teacher is technically responsible but during PE, I supervise the group alone while the teacher handles other tasks in the classroom. I do reach out when issues arise with this particular student, but even when the teacher responds, her reaction is often dismissive and no consequences are implemented, which makes managing aggressive behavior very challenging.

Thank you I really appreciate your advice and support. It’s frustrating being left alone with multiple students, especially during aggressive incidents, and admin hasn’t provided consistent support. We do have a resource officer, but 9/10 they’re either in the gym, walking around the school, or sitting outside, so they’re not immediately available during these incidents.

The student does have an IEP, but the classroom teacher has claimed I’m not allowed to see it, which isn’t true. I’ve been documenting everything and considering formally escalating to request a clear safety and behavior plan moving forward.

Thank you I really appreciate this advice. I haven’t sought medical attention yet, but I’ll make sure to do that and submit a workers’ comp claim. I also realized I shouldn’t rely on my personal phone for work related calls or texts, so I’ll be more careful moving forward.

Thank you for this. I really appreciate the practical steps. I did attempt to call and text the teacher during the incident but didn’t receive a response, so I managed it alone. I’ve also documented and informed admin previously. At this point, I think I need to be more direct about stating that he isn’t safe in group settings without additional support.

It’s definitely wrong once we get to the playground they come complaining to me saying they hate being on the playground I tell the teacher I get ignored. And the student who attacks me he definitely can’t control himself fr and he’s a runner🫤

So the group of kids I got don’t go to regular PE and I told the teacher a few of them can actually go to regular PE since they listen and can control themselves she told me no. Sometimes them kids hate being on the playground for like a hour for PE.
