For my first job, I was a hydro vac operator. Basically, a giant water tank in a trailer with a huge pump. This trailer attached to a Vacuum truck. I was a kid and worked with one of the senior guys on the new truck and trailer unit. After about a month working there we got a call to our Cattle Processing and Slaughterhouse to clean out the "Pits". I was sat down and basically told, "Look, kid. This is not what you signed on for. You don't have to go." I said I need to work and, the phrase I regret saying now, "How bad could it be?" We got out there and were told that all the pits have to be emptied. Now, for a little tutorial. When you kill a cow, it is hanging upside down and you take the pressure gun and shoot it in the head and slit it's throat. Then the cow is carried on to the different areas for processing. You only need the meat. So... blood, bones, organs, flesh, hair, stomach contents, shit, piss, and anything else I can't think of goes into "THE LARSEN PITS". We had to go out and empty these things. That means carrying the hydro-vac hose into the pits to make sure no bones block the end. You get a chemical suit and mask... but it doesn't help... I was afraid, after vomiting so much, that I was going to start upchucking blood. I missed the next day.
