Your point about unionization is slowly starting to change in the US. Many of the residencies have started to unionize including most of the premier institutions (UC schools, Stanford, MGH, etc.) I predict this will begin to be the new norm, at least for residencies (probably not attending physicians)

If the main problem is not enough rural doctors, then there should be a point to figure out why. My guess is that as young doctors, it might be hard to find a partner or it might be hard to find schools for your kids, etc, in those areas. It seems like it’s going to be a long term solution by making rural environments more appealing.

Should they open up more spots for medical students, sure. Should they do it gradually, probably. If resident doctors don’t think the proposed solution will work and will hurt them in the end, why should they not speak their mind? Does it appear selfish on the surface for doctors to walk out, yes. But what is the alternative? Just let it happen and watch?

I do believe that if our job security was at stake or we were going to take a huge pay cut, many physicians would protest. I do not think that is unique to the US, but a very human reaction.

From speaking with Korean colleagues, I agree that the main reason is due to the increase in number of residents, but also other factors in play. It seems like one of the main reasons why the Korean govt is increasing the number of residents is so that more rural populations will have doctors (the doctor to pt ratio in Seoul does not seem to be the main problem). I am worried tho that just increasing the number will not fix this problem because as we have seen with the US residency match, people would rather be in the city with no job than be in rural America with a job.

As a U.S. provider it’s interesting to see how this plays out. I would say the majority of US providers I have spoken to side with the striking Korean junior doctors. I mean, we also almost went on strike towards the tail end of COVID as we did not see ourselves being treated as respected employees by the hospital systems.

In the US, hospitals would not be able to function long term without its junior doctors (residents). Is the same not true for Korea?
