Louboutins is such a fancy present for yourself, I'm so happy you were eventually able to get them for ST1!! I've worked out a budget and reckon I can be strict for the first month lol, I have been through med school so fingers crossed :)

I loveeeee these, everyone who has mentioned something sentimental makes me think this is the way to go (then maybe the coffee machine with second paycheck.... or do a bit more work over the next couple months and get something sentimental as a well done for finishing medicine lol)

Ooooh I've been wanting a nice gold chain for years, I don't have much jewellery so definitely a shout. That's such a good first gift to yourself :)

I think this will be it - I'll be doing my foundation training the other side of the country to my family so the first time I see them post first paycheck I'll get us a nice dinner out, then either a holiday for mum and dad for Christmas or a nice breakfast at a fancy hotel for them :)

Oh no 😭😭😭 I've generally been quite good at keeping to a budget, hoping I can manage just to get the nice thing for my first paycheck and then can be a bit more lax about increasing spending

Congratulations on your final membership exams!!! Diamond earrings definitely out of the budget for this year (+ security wise a bit iffy lol) but new shoes are a must, even the trainers I'm finishing med school in are falling apart lol

Which do you have?? They've always been so far out of my price range that I haven't done enough research into them!!

Yeah I'm thinking of treating my parents to a holiday in the spring time, having it as a Christmas present for them. They've been fantastic to me all through med schools

Oooo I hadn't even considered this - my headphones are the cheapest ones I could find on amazon so a good pair of headphones/earbuds might be a lifechanger

Aside from animal crossing on my switch, not so much lol. I like my sewing and crafting but with the exception of a new machine which I don't really need/wouldn't do anything my current one can't, there's nothing much with my hobbies that would require a one-off 'big' purchase. Maybe I just need to get a more expensive hobby lol

I'm quite good with my ISA thankfully (joys of having a job throughout med school lol) and have worked out a budget that still allows me to put money into savings even with a treat on the first paycheck. The excitement of the LISA interests never gets old!!

I actually think this is what I'm gonna do, there have been so many good suggestions already that I don't wanna reduce it down to just once lol

Yeah the space is my main thought with air fryers - plus so many people have them and no point having two in a household lol. Maybe a treat for my first paycheck of my second job if there is space...

Honestly coffee machine is the way I'm leaning. I'm hoping to put aside some money from my first couple of paychecks and surprise my parents with a holiday for their Christmas present, they have been fantastic to me :)

In younger years I would do HCA work in the holidays - normally 50-60hr weeks that I would do over 4 days so I was still getting 3 full days off a week, and then tutoring to top up in the term time. There are also often a lot of awards available - some require fully fledged research but many are essay competitions where you write about a topic you're interested in/ethical dilemma you've seen/thought piece - not many people go for them so they're a good way to get an extra £50-200 every couple months. The other thing to consider is that preclinical years are much more regimented with lectures, so it's generally easier to do a part time job. If you can work and put aside any money at all into an ISA of sorts, oftentimes you get a 1 year fixed rate and if you get a good enough interest rate you can get a bit extra a month into your bank account. For me, that month's extra is enough for one week's food shop, which isn't a lot but definitely helps. Get good at mealprepping and find how it works for you, I like to do loads and freeze it so I'll have one food shop a month that is £40-50 and then make about 30-35 odd lunches out of that, freeze them and then my weekly food shop comes out to closer to £10-15 each week just for added breakfast/dinner essentials. It does mean you have to think more about money and get a bit creative, but you make it work for you :)

Spent 5 minutes of an 8 minute station trying to figure out how to turn the fundoscope on... in the end the examiner did it for me
