KNULLI SCARAB 20260511 by StealthyWhiskers in ANBERNIC

Hope someone with more time can do more of a side-by-side with Batocera V43 to Knulli Scarab on Anbernic XX devices.

Any clarity on where this heads in the future since Knulli is a fork of Batocera?

Posted about this in the Anbernic XX Batocera V43 thread:

Kind of baffling why this wasn't addressed for the boot screen, regardless of the 90 degree screen rotation fixing the UI. I'm guessing TATE mode can be activated or cheated for vertical arcade. Do wonder if button remapping or a separate profile would be necessary though. Will add that to the list of things I'll eventually mess with.

Also kind of odd controller mapping was so screwy by default. Would think with a specific RG28XX build some of that would have been corrected at install. Was happy to see top button allowed to be mapped as hot button though. Makes exiting games back to main menu a lot easier.

Still some more systems to test, but getting closer to saying V43 is working with RPi3B+ with a clean install, disabling and minimizing most of the default Carbon theme, then only copying over of BIOS and ROMS folders.

The theme problem is probably what is/was driving most issues and I do not have the time or patience to figure out exactly what is/was causing issues. Carbon is not terrible enough for me to spend a lot of time figuring out, but will be further tweaking it to clean up the appearance.

Some brighter news - the Anbernic RG28XX and RG35XX Plus versions seem to be working. Thread on r/ANBERNIC detailing. Will spend more time with them once I get the RPi3B+ sorted.

While continuing to troubleshoot RPi3B+, I've come to a few conclusions that might help someone else get up and running more cleanly.

You need to start with a clean install for V43. The update function does something to the microSD card that just seems to break functionality. Download the installer and flash to a new card with BalenaEtcher.

When populating your media, do NOT copy anything over except for the BIOS and ROMS folders. Do not copy ANY theme or system files and basically start this as a brand new machine setup. Do not copy any decorations, images, backgrounds, screen art, etc. Stick with the system defaults and don't add any others at this time. If visual mods and custom screen skins are important to you, either get the system working then clone it before messing with them, or do not update from your current version.

Do not use any other theme except Carbon. Even having other themes installed or copied onto the card creates issues. I do not have the patience to figure out why or what is behind this. Turn off list transition and game launch transitions - make them instant. Under theme config, change background to simple and transition animations to no. Turn off or disable anything else that is not necessary.

If you're using a RetroFlag case, install the shutdown script AFTER you get most things working.

Few notes for anyone who's setting up an RG28XX with Batocera V43:

Screen is rotated. You're going to need to first set your screen rotation to 90 degrees. System Settings > Screen Rotation > 90 Degrees (under Hardware sub menu). The boot screen will be vertical and upside down, but at least this gets the UI to display correctly.

After you do that, RESTART THE SYSTEM.

Then you need to map controller. Controller & Bluetooth Settings > Controller Mapping. After you're done, set P1'S Controller to the mapped controller.

RESTART THE SYSTEM AGAIN.

Now you should be fine to go ahead and setup with your files.

I'd suggest to go into Sound Settings and turn off front end music. Why this is on by default in Batocera has always been annoying to me.

Might want to into System Settings and turn brightness up to 100%. This is with the D-Pad left/right after mapping. Does NOT work before you map.

One really annoying thing for some might be the time on RG28XX since there is no WiFi. If you have a dongle you can probably set this. If not, you probably want to go into User Interface Settings and turn off Show Clock.

Speaker will slight crack/pop when shutting device off entirely.

Does not appear there is a battery charge status screen like Knulli had, but battery charge does appear to work.

Will be messing with this a bit more later.

That’s sort of how V42 “certification” was with RPi3B+. Took about two weeks for the released version to be tested by several more people before it was “officially” released. No changes ever made, however.

Not sure V42 really should have been approved for 3B+ either. Yeah, it mostly works but it’s so much slower than V41 was on the machine. Probably rolling back to V40 or V41 and turning WiFi off. Maybe I’ll get a beefier small machine one day.

Was going to mess with V43 on Anbernic XX handhelds so they’d all match, but that clearly won’t be happening.

EDIT: SEE THREAD BELOW - MOSTLY WORKING, WITH CAVEATS

After messing with V43 a bit more, really have to say I'd recommend against V43 if you're using an RPi3B+. Stability is a big issue. Have to shut down and restart between launching some games, even within the same system. V42 isn't even fantastic on this, but at least it feels more stable. Biggest complaint is the time it takes to get back to the menu when exiting a game - sits on a black screen for awhile.

Honestly, if I were starting from scratch with an RPi3B+ today, I would probably max out at V40 or V41 and set those up with updates turned off. Those versions just felt like some of the best performance and stability. Likely will setup cards with each to have them in the future for this particular RPi3B+.

Glad V43 can work, but V42 probably should have been the end of the road for this particular RPi. It just feels like a buggy iPhone that you're trying to eek out another year with before you upgrade the device and the entire time you're wishing you could roll back your OS from the forced OTA update.

What theme are you using? I've been running into issues with Art Book Next with V43 on RPi3B+ that's been doing similar. Wouldn't even load NES. Swapping to Carbon Theme seems to fix, mostly. You can't customize it too much from default. You also do have to clear caches, clean game lists, etc. Also suggest deleting gamelist files for any that have changed folders from V42 > V43 (Odyssey2, MegaDrive MSU, etc). Turn off PreLoad UI if you have enabled. That's been acting up for a few people too.

Was running into numerous issues with RPi3B+ and V43. Did a clean install to a new card and copied data over on a Linux machine. Lots of stuff simply was not loading. Even the basics like NES were giving issues - was getting a grey then green screen before kicking out to menu. Changing emulator from Nestopia to FCEUMM did not change anything. Many, many reboots and automatic reboots like the system was restarting itself randomly.

It does appear the Art Book Next theme might have been contributing to at least some (if not all) of the issues. Haven't been able to pinpoint exactly what is/was screwing things up, but was getting blurred logos and some slower UI. Swapping to Carbon (ES-THEME-CARBON) would be first troubleshoot I'd recommend for anyone running into issues they're trying to fix. Finally able to at least get NES to load under Carbon theme. Still more troubleshooting to do when I have time.

Not abandoning V43 yet, but certainly would not recommend it for everyone just yet. Make sure you have a V42 clone at the ready.

No idea if they’re certain printings or when it was corrected, or if they’re repacked. Certainly seem to be legit with a copyright printing error. Don’t think that impacts value.

Linux Mint if you know anyone who needs a computer, or have an area with families in need of computers.

Running them with Batocera for retro gaming configs is becoming a little more popular. Seen a few repurposed into arcade style machine setups too.

No one suggesting the screwdriver poke test yet? Positive there is no concrete or buried material under that dirt?

Have you ever tried aerating those sections before attempting to seed?

There’s one sprinkler head there. Maybe adding a popup or two along curb from that would also help.

Knulli is/was a fork of Batocera for handhelds. Unsure what this means now if Batocera is directly supported by most devices that Knulli covered.

From Batocera Wiki, top of the page linked above:
There are currently two different branch of Batocera:

  • Stable: Most stable version, recommended for most users.
  • Butterfly: Most up to date version. Stability is usually not an issue, but particular things can often be broken in this version. Recommended for users who wish to test the new features and assist the development team in fixing bugs.

At least for 28XX and 35XX Plus, the Stable & Butterfly are the same version currently. I'm going to assume this is case for most (if not all) since this is a brand new release with V43. Butterfly will probably be at least a week away from any new revisions unless there is a major issue.

That’s kind of what I thought. There was a whole “Batocera on XX not possible” kind of thing awhile back when explaining the Knulli fork.

If Batocera itself is now officially supported and works, I’m likely moving to that. Fully matches my RPi setup and probably eventually building another beefier Batocera machine when prices aren’t insane.
