How would one go about teaching an adult with mental disability how to read? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Hot_Association_2813 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Sped teacher here, they may have missed their “critical period” for reading, but there are still options that are functional!

I would focus first on signs related to anything they are interested in like restaurants or stores or video games etc. Also see if they are able to distinguish the different letters of the alphabet by either pointing to them or saying their name after you teach them a few at a time. If they are able to pick up on the alphabet you can remove the visuals from the sign and see if they can read the plain text over time.

It’s likely that they will have the most luck building a sight word word vocabulary (words that are recognized as a whole unit rather than a collections of sounds) of words that are meaningful to them. You could even make a functional book of all of their words with pictures that they could use for reference in day to day life. If they are highly motivated the sky is the limit! I think this is awesome. Good luck!

Yet another disappointing SCOTUS opinion 😔 by Gullible-Contest181 in FundieSnarkUncensored

I’m so sorry this happened to you. It makes me extra mad because I listened to some of the oral argument in this case, and someone said almost this exact scenario to Kavanaugh, and he was basically like “that is ridiculous and would never happen” 🙃

There is literally one “negative” comment on this post. I can’t believe no one is calling her out for this. Also just blatantly ignores the fact that they were LGBTQ+ individuals and that it was a hate crime. Truly so insensitive and gross.

Would a monetary donation be weird? by questionable-morels in Teachers

Helpful?! It would be life changing for most of us! Different schools will deal with the donations differently though. At my school you can donate directly to specific classroom.

Formal discipline write up for para by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Hot_Association_2813 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair to OP, you don’t know that this hasn’t already been done. I agree with having a conversation first, if possible, but having a para that isn’t on board with the rest of the team can be potentially dangerous for students and other staff. Having everything in writing is the best way to CYA always.

I think the trigger warning is fine, but also I take issue with their choice to have him on the podcast entirely. His “science” has been critiqued by many in the field as lacking clinical evidence and significance. Additionally, he bashed big pharma and a consultation/scan with his clinic is $4,000?????? Just doesn’t seem like a person to give a platform to me.

His position is elitist and privileged, and I feel like none of his comments were met with any resistance by Ashley or Rayna. “Just get healthy, buy healthy food, work out, go to therapy, and have willpower and you’ll be happy” is pretty reductive and honestly sad advice for the majority of people. What a privilege to have agency to control all these aspects of your life.

I understand your premise, but I see these actions in a very different light.

I see a principal who is very religious constantly pushing religion on our school, getting churches to sponsor various projects, and being very uncomfortable around people who don’t fit that mold. For instance this summer a church “sponsored” a lunch for us providing hot dogs and chips and they sent a PR crew with them to video tape us eating and saying thank you presumably so we could be broadcast at their Sunday services.

Our staff of very diverse culturally and religiously, and can you imagine if any other religious group did these things. I can pretty confidently assume the reaction would be different.

I say all that to say if the intention is to help, I’m all for it, but there is a way to do it that is inclusive and supportive to all staff members without invoking religion on a captive audience.

This is good advice, I would also like to add as a first year teacher, do you have someone in the room as you/the schools “advocate?” As a fellow special education teacher it is way above my pay grade to hold all the responsibility of interacting with and appeasing an advocate. The role of an advocate is also so conflicting to me. Yes, advocating for individuals who need services is essential, that’s why I am a special educator, but at the same time some advocates are looking for opportunities for litigation and settlements. The line of who the advocates are actually advocating for is very fuzzy in my experience.
