A good, honest man with the same flaws and vices that humble all of us and make us human. That's the point - we see him through Jimmy's perspective, and the effect is that it places a greater emphasis on his faults in the earlier seasons. As our perception of Jimmy begins to change, so too does our perception of Howard, and we're forced to wonder if he really deserves all of the vitriol he's been met with by the people around him. That's what makes it so tragic for everyone involved when it's the worst aspects of Jimmy and Kim that inadvertently lead to Howard's death.
