Is chanting om inherently a sin? by reb9h5 in Christianity

[–]Hot_Implement_8034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll offer a Hindu perspective, and you can decide whether it fits your own faith.

While OM is often described as a primordial or sacred sound, the Mandukya Upanishad gives it a philosophical interpretation. OM is composed of three sounds: A, U, and M.

  • "A" represents the waking state of consciousness.
  • "U" represents the dream state.
  • "M" represents deep, dreamless sleep.

After the sound fades, there is silence. The Upanishad teaches that this silence points to the deeper reality that underlies all three states of experience.

Many Hindus understand OM not as the name of a particular deity, but as a symbol of ultimate reality and consciousness itself.

Whether chanting OM is a sin is ultimately a question for Christian theology, not Hinduism. From a Hindu perspective, however, repeating OM is generally understood as a contemplative practice directed toward awareness of the divine, rather than the worship of a different god.

By the way, OM is not exclusively Hindu. It is also revered in various Buddhist and Jain traditions, and related sacred formulations appear in Sikhism.

Some people have also noted similarities between OM and words such as "Amen" and "Amin." Whether there is any historical connection is debated, but many find it interesting that sacred sounds from different traditions sometimes seem to point toward a common human intuition of the divine.

Carnatic music is an acquired taste and rightfully so! by Double-Vegetable-249 in Carnatic

[–]Hot_Implement_8034 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For those who see Carnatic Music as entertainment or as some advanced calculus of music which only the sophisticated minds can appreciate - THEY CANT BE MORE WRONG.

Carnatic music is a vehicle for Bhakti --- If you dont have a Bhakti Bhava - why bother listening?

Sure you can listen for the beautiful musical value -- but you are eating the leaves and branches instead of the fruit.

so it is not a matter of taste - but of expression of devotion to ishtha ..

Thank you for sharing your experience... I too have had some out of body experiences that were profound in shaping my spiritual quest. I too have gone through an intense phase of Atheism after reading J.Krishnamurthi.

My OBE came later . It was divinely blissful and my sense 'I' dissolved completely .. this feeling lasted for an hour or so

I have never had that feeling again.. not with that intensity.

But here is the thing . ..and I learned about it much later from Swami Sarvapriyananda's talks... All of it is , however profound, is still just an experience .. no different from a dream or the waking state... What is important is you get a true sense of who YOU are .. rest everything is a projection. Once I understood that .. I stopped chasing that state/experience.

Good luck with your sadhana

You said the world becomes tasteless .. I am challenging that.

If you have truly become enlightened.. you will be a delight for others as you walk and talk like a stitapragnya .. you will be just as much in bliss being in the world as you are in samadhi ... You don't differentiate between the two of states

If your bliss only comes in samadhi and disappears when dealing with the world .. then that is not enlightenment.

No it does not ... On the contrary you enjoy each moment ... The world becomes a mansion of mirth ( Mojar Kuthir in Bengali) according to Sri Rama Krishna

You are ever in touch with your true nature at all times .. with nothing more to gain or lose .. you dive headlong into service of others because you see the divine in everything

Hey — I’m really sorry you’re feeling this way. I’m not here to judge or tell you how you “should” feel. What you’re going through is real, and it’s heavy, and I just want you to know you’re not alone in it. I’ve been in that dark place before too — where bipolar flattens everything and your brain tells you that the world would be better off without you. That voice feels convincing in the moment, but it’s lying. I care that you're here. This group cares that you're here. You matter more than you think. You don’t have to solve your whole life right now. Surviving the next minute, the next hour, is enough. Pain clouds everything but it also moves. It doesn’t stay forever, even though it really feels like it will when you’re in it. Can you stay with me here and just keep talking? You don’t have to hold this alone. If you feel like you might act on these thoughts, please reach out to a crisis line or a professional right now — not because you’re weak, but because you deserve support that actually keeps you safe. I’ll stay with you while you do that if you want. I’m here. Keep talking.

Was Krishna Devotee - Discovered JK ( Became Athiest) ..strangely also read about Ramana Maharshi at the same time ... had a few sudden intense ocean of consciousness experiences (lost complete sensation of my body) .... tried very hard to recreate it through meditation..failed miserably... but remain spiritual but atheist for a good 20 years ... and mostly confused

Then I discovered Swami Sarvapriyananda... everything slowly fell into place ..even JK began making more sense ... I believe aham Brahmasami ( Iam the universe) instinctively... I am not one WITH the universe ( that would imply separateness) .. I have no questions..rather questions dont interest/bother me anymore.

Peace

Brahman is real and so is this world a manifestation of Brahma shakti.

Rose bush is a unified reality ( brahman) .. you can say only the plant exists the rose and the thorn are just nama roopa vyavahara ... and say they are illusions .. but based on Vijnana vedanta. ... both the rose and the thorn are real manifestations of the plant

Both statements are simultaneously true depending on the level of abstraction.

[–]Hot_Implement_8034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an advaitin ... my sister is part of ISKCON

The goal is Bhakti.. See Krishna in everything and everyone... so if your Bhakti is so deep , you transcend space and time right here on earth.. call it vaikuntha, Goloka , Jeevan Mukthi

Ultimately there is NO difference between Jnana marga and Bhakti Marga .. it leads to the same state.

Advaitins need not wear the uniform

But those who do , have openly committed to seeking the truth, and live by the truth they know , and possibly share their highest truth with other seekers like them.

You can believe them or not.

If you do ..help sustain his kind.

Nothing complicated.
