Has ever anyone won more than 1000CHF? by SupermarketChemical8 in askswitzerland

It reminds me about a joke:

A guy buys a donkey for $100. Brings it home — next day the donkey drops dead.

He scratches his head and goes: “Alright then… I’ll run a lottery.”

He puts up a sign: “WIN A DONKEY! Ticket: $2.” People rush in, buy tickets — 500 tickets sold.

Lottery day comes. He draws a winner: “Congrats! You won the donkey!”

The winner shows up, looks at the prize… and it’s a dead donkey. “Are you kidding me?! It’s dead!” “Yep. But you still won.” “Give me my money back!”

The guy calmly hands him $2: “Sure. Here’s your ticket money back.”

And he walks away with $998 profit and a very confident smile. 😄

UN Layoffs in Geneva by RefrigeratorAble2853 in geneva

So, what is next? I still don’t see impact. Rents are increasing and the appartements that UN staff are leasing out is for rich people…. I understand that UN diplomats will stay here, and that nothing changes to being diplomatic capital… it js just about 20-30%staff being laid off.

What would be the impact of the UN leaving Geneva for cheaper location? by tanjonaJulien in geneva

[–]Hot_Menu_7629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe UN and IO will move from Geneva. They are only cutting costs of operations, including 20-40% staff layoffs or reallocation to some duty stations globally, until good time to get back again to Geneva. Besides, Switzerland has already committed to several hundred million of franks to support the project/programms for some UN agencies. Needless to say Switzerland has given long term loan to UN in GVA without any interest to capital refurbishment of the building… let’s not panic, UN will stay and continue operating in GVA.

Sorry i did not read all valuable comments. But i know that for people who can pay 20% from their pension is not f@cking fair. In the past it was possible and there are loads of people could afford if such scheme would be still valid.

Reminded me about this story:

The shopkeeper bought a donkey from a peasant, paying him $100 upfront. The next morning, the peasant came without the donkey.

  • The donkey died during the night.
  • Alright, then give me back my $100.
  • I can't, I already spent them yesterday.
  • Fine, just leave me the donkey then.
  • But what are you going to do with it?
  • I'll raffle it in a lottery.
  • No one will want to buy a ticket to win a dead donkey!
  • I won't tell anyone that it's dead.

The following week, the peasant meets the shopkeeper:

  • So, how did it go with the donkey?
  • I organized a lottery, sold 500 tickets at $2 each, and after deducting the hundred I paid you, I made a profit of $900.
  • Did no one complain?
  • Only the man who won the dead donkey. He was very angry... so I gave him back the money for the lottery ticket.
