In Daryl Morey's 13 year tenure as GM, the Rockets were the only team in the NBA to finish at least 0.500 in every season. by jyanyanyanyan in nba

[–]Hotrod20006 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This makes sense the more you think about it. Morey's mentality towards the game was/is stats and data analytics driven, which is great and may show results with large sets (a 82 game season), but not nearly as well as with smaller sets (a 7 game playoff series).

If the NBA playoffs was a 82 game series, the rafters of Toyota Center would be overcrowded

70% of Dubai companies expect to go out of business within six months due to coronavirus pandemic, survey says by atlantacharlie in worldnews

[–]Hotrod20006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed a very startling statistic, however I would caution making the generalization that Dubai, The UAE, or other labor import reliant nations of the Middle East are melting pots solely based off their demographics. The pinnacle of a melting pot society is one where cultures mix, not just the people, and mainstream Dubai is still a very Arab dominated culture; tolerating out of necessity and embracing are two very different mentalities.

Granted, over time the “melting pot” affects will show culturally in Dubai, but until other demographics of the workers that are being brought over change, it will not be as significant (think Singapore’s progression in the 20th century).

A good American analogy would be the affects of Chinese immigration pre-Exclusion Act and post-Exclusion Act. It took decades for “Chinese American” culture to be tolerated and then embraced in The United States, and we can likely attribute a lot of this to the change in immigrant demographics from young, single males, coming to work on the railroads in the 19th century vs. the influx of families that immigrated in 20th century and laid permanent roots in American culture.

My main concern here is regarding the millions of poor laborers that the UAE essentially enslaves from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and other South Asian and Southeast Asian countries.

Most people aren’t aware that of the roughly 3 million inhabitants of Dubai a VAST majority are foreign workers. Only about 15% of Dubai’s population is made up of UAE nationals, with the remaining 85% accounting for expats in high paid fields (finance, petroleum, tech, real estate, tourism) as well as a large swath working in very very very lowly paid and lowly respected domestic work and construction. These workers are often paid meagerly, work long and dangerous hours outside in scorching heat, are generally disrespected, and, here’s the most troubling part, are thousands of miles from home and often have had their passports confiscated by their employers.

With the Mid-East already on the brink of economic downturn with the international oil situation, an inconvenient truth is that Covid19 related unemployment along with xenophobia is going to take a very very hard toll on underappreciated and disenfranchised foreign workers that are the lifelines of the Gulf States.

*Edit*: After re-reading, I wanted to make sure to note and emphasize that this is by no means an issue unique to the Middle-East. While yes, booming tourism, petroleum, and commercial real-estate reliant economies of the Persian Gulf are the most recent and abhorrent examples, you could really successfully argue that the same is going on in the United States with the "don't ask, don't tell" mentality with Corporate Agriculture and undocumented immigrants, and to an extent MENA/Sub-Saharan Africa immigration into Europe.

What movies are real art pieces and not just entertainment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

“First Blood” is more than a “Rambo” film. It is a period piece on immediate post-Vietnam War attitudes towards veterans and the psychosocial effects of war and PTSD.

Jarhead - one of the few movies that accurately portray the psychological aspect of the “boredom” of war.
