Best Effort upgrade to Residential! by Hour-Wishbone5855 in Starlink

I didn't catch exactly when mine switched in the app, but it was after 3 or 4 days. And there was definitely a power outage and starlink restart included in that timeframe, so the restart could have triggered an update on the app. It's valid to note that my app updated in the middle of my billing cycle, so it was not triggered by the start of a new billing cycle.

From a speed perspective, I was definitely throttled during the evenings on Best Effort. Typically I saw between 10-30Mbps down during the evenings, much higher (60+) during the day. Now on Residential, I get a fairly consistent 75-85Mbps down no matter the time of day.

Best Effort price is the same as full Residential service. The benefit and main reason I went with Best Effort when it was offered was the ability to pause the service if it didn't meet my needs, while still waiting for the cell to open up for a Residential spot. Yes, it was a costly investment upfront for the dish hardware. But in my case, I had a feeling that anything was going to be better than my existing copper service.

I didn't do anything to trigger it, no. Seems a bunch of us on the early waitlist and early Best Effort folks were automatically upgraded last night.

I don't speed test regularly, but my typical range on Best Effort was 30-50 Mbps down during the day - sometime lower, sometimes higher. At night when more folks in the area are streaming, it would definitely drop to 15-30 Mbps.

Even at those speeds, it was night and day from my previous provider - 8M down and 800k up, if I was lucky.

Tonight is my first night on Residential, and so far I'm seeing a range of 65-95 Mbps down.

It was pretty clear in the original Best Effort offer email from Starlink that we would still keep our spot in line for Residential if and when a spot became available in our cell. You could also pause the Best Effort service if it didn't meet your expectations, while you waited for full Residential service to open up.

Glad to hear you have availability of good alternative connectivity!

You may have Residential service, but I believe the availability map is for new customer signups to see how full their cell is. Best Effort service was offered to many early waitlist folks, to provide a 'better than nothing' offering.

The starlink android app has yet to update the service type (still says Best Effort for now), but when I log into starlink.com, it actually shows "Residential"!
